Does Luna really call Celestia "Tia"?

No, this is something entirely made by the fandom

Also Celly is a better nickname

I've seen plenty of fanfics where Luna calls Celestia "Tia" for short.

Does she ever actually do this in canon?

Nah, pure fandom thing since times immemorial. According to the Journal of the Two Sisters, Luna at least used to call her "Cellie" (I write it as Celly, but it's pronounced the same way   :-P )

She doesn't, but she should! Seriously, how cute would that be? The best scenario to introduce this in would be a slice of life episode with Celestia and Luna doing sisterly bonding. Then again, I've always wanted that to happen as well yet it has not happened. :\

I don't even get where this name calling thing originated from

Can you explain the background of "tia"?

My guess is it just the last 3 letters in Celestia....

Honestly, I find "'Tia" exceptionally stupid

"Celie" (Seh-Lee) rolls off the tongue a lot easier and I wish it was used more

I agree. Especially since "tia" means "aunt" in spanish. :-P Even though I know it's a name, in the back of my mind I'm thinking "Auntie!".  ^_^

Maybe that's what Blueblood calls her....

I hate the fandom nickname given to her. It's stupid, and "Celie" (as coined canon by the Journal of the Two Sisters) sounds a lot better. As far as the show goes, however- as many others have brought out, Luna doesn't have an affectionate nickame for her. "My Sister", or her full name is only spoken

I sure wish Luna would call her sister Tia.  I've always loved that nickname.  Didn't really care for Celie, as she called her in the Journal of the Two Sisters.
