general Does your brain do this too?

Sooooooo my brain has a weird "long-term/short-term memory" thing that confuses me to this day. I remember past interactions, people, faces, random facts, songs, artist methods and a lot more very vividly. Yet, I COMPLETELY forget math, the definitions of certain words, most of my dreams, and other things a few minutes after comprehending them. It's really weird to me. Because of this, I had VERY hard time in school. Instead of remembering test answers, I would remember interactions between me and other classmates/ teachers more. Sometimes I wonder if my brain values social things over academic things on its own ( sorta against my will). I don't know anymore. To me, its a blessing and curse.

What about any of you?

im kinda similar I think? I can remember the things you pointed out, but when it comes to school, I don't really take notes or remember most of the lessons, until the test comes and it just comes to me. except... I usually forget somepony telling me something or forgetting what I did like 5 minutes prior. I could misplace something I put somewhere 15 minutes ago because I completely forgot what I did with it. :derp: but there are a lot of things that I can  remember from years ago... is weird

Brains (human or animal) never cease to amaze me. At least the answers came to you eventually. They never did for me. XD

I have the opposite experience - I tend to pick up academic points very well but struggle to remember 'social stuff'. I can recall the gist of an article on a relevant topic that I read years ago, but I can't remember the names of the people I see every day.

Another oddity is that whilst I have a very good memory for technical matters (mathematics, the sciences and so on) I have quite a poor memory for a number of mechanical matters (such as bicycle, car or computer repairs) which is something that has never made sense to me. Not getting social stuff is probably a result of how my brain is wired, but most mechanical skills are simply a practical application of what I already know in a theoretical sense.

Wow! Even though your brain does the opposite of mine, I can relate to the weirdness of this phenomenon.

My memories is running low these days, maybe either I'm getting older or I just care less now.

I have a different condition. Technical information like formulas or definitions I would usually keep easily, but memories of events taking place in my life sometimes go haywire - I start remembering people talking in a different voice, or a place appearing larger than it is, or an object colored differently.

I think that it happens if some of my memory fades, my brain would try to auto complete it rather then leave it fuzzy.

Yeah to be honest I have this exact same mechanic myself as I basically remember absolutely everything about places and major interactions with people like people who are very special to me that I don't see that often. Plus I also remember every single thing that people say about me as that determines how other people see me and I use that knowledge to literally do anything I want while being able to avoid people around me from noticing it if I don't want them to know about my activity. But then I forgot about some of the simplest things like I often forget the names of people who I don't often see and I sometimes forget or get confused when test answers as somethings the answers don't get forgotten but they rather get mixed up with other answers. :)

Probably a phase you might be going through. I now realized the truth about Mathematics not 100% Arithmetics (Please don't make the same mistake as me) and all about PROVING if those Arithmetics I've been computing all my life hold true even to this very day.

It's a thinking process you're going through where you're beginning to take value in social companionship over academics. Humans are social creatures after all. Making References to apply for jobs and resumes is unfortunately the real deal to be interviewed and get hired. I would personally say its borderline Primary over your skills and experience which come Secondary (still work on them though to not be too dependent on References since you won't last long if you got no skills or experience).

Believe it or not you're in a better spot than me :(. You at least realize this is happening to you and you can do something about this if you want. Not so much in my case back in my days, but I'm making a recovery.

Sappy moments aside, here's a joke I guess to end on. At least your brain's not on drugs.

Beside the fact that some brains retain short and long term memories in different ways, the brain tends to remember things that matter to you more personally. I never remember things I don't care about, that's why cramming test answers for school would never work for me. But when the mind is open and receptive, sure, it'll hang onto those memories because they have personal importance. The brain doesn't work according to a hard schedule and set of rules. It defines you as an individual and as such remembers things in its own individual way.

I have the exact opposite problem. People constantly say things like "remember when this happened?" or "but I told you about this already." The thing is, I listen. I don't just ignore people. However, I never remember personal things that have happened to me- I don't even have any memories from before I was probably ten or eleven. On the opposite end of things, though, I have god-level memory skills for things that have no personal connotations. That's why I always tested well; I had an insane memory for facts. I honestly wish my memory could be more balanced. I hate not being able to remember things about my relationships with other people or even myself.

This is very familiar to me. I can memorize things pretty well, at least if it's something that interests me. I usually did well at school (except in a couple of subjects that I found boring), but if you were to ask me about some of the subjects now... There are things I studied less than ten years ago but have completely forgotten. I can actually remember completely irrelevant things better. A while ago, I heard the theme song to a random cartoon I didn't even like as a child for the first time in 16 years and realized I still remembered half the lyrics! If I could only do that with something that's actually useful...

I've had something similar happen to me.  Of course, with my anxiety I forgot things that I could actually retain because I was too nervous over taking a test.  So it's a pain when I don't remember what I've studied and just remember, say, what someone was wearing the day before or what someone said before class that didn't even matter to me in the first place...  It's very frustrating, to say the least!  I'm trying to study for my driver's license test but I keep forgetting what I'm supposed to know...
