Griffon, griffin, gryphon... In the end I think all of these are correct. However, in the show they happen to be (at least preferably/mostly) referred as griffons, and therefore, this is the name the rank has got.

Yeah. I’ve used Griffin and Griffon interchangeably since I keep running into it being spelled both ways by fans and eventually picked up the habit of unknowingly using the “in” spelling here and there.
