Why is Applejack sometimes referred to as a background pony?

I was wondering why some say this.

Like, NO she's NOT. She is ONE OF THE MANE characters. *  I think she's one of my favourites, and has a lot of depth in her character.

She's hardworking, cares about her family, and wants to be ambitious in working at improving herself.

How is that petty? Also, the toy merch is dumb, she deserves a hat at least! 

(i can't believe Ashleigh Ball voices AJ & RD, since their voices contrast by like a lot).

A background pony is a pony that doesn't say anything and stays in the background. Applejack has been the main character of numerous episodes and has said multiple things before; therefore, she is not a background pony.

It really makes me angry when I hear people call her a background pony. She's the most developed of the main characters and the most likable, and she's had some great episodes! She will always be my favorite. <3

Well, she also does the singing voice for Rainbow Dash, and it is absolutely awesome!

 

I think people are either just trolling saying Applejack is a background character, or they think she got too little screen time in the Movie or something similar. Applejack is very much a main character, and has a big farm and family to back it up.

I believe it is because of all the mane six she sort of just is already where she wants to be running her farm. That and in polls she was often actually beaten in popularity by background ponies so she got that name for herself as in polls often background ponies would be more popular while the mane six or five of them remained in top five so yeah.

Mainly cause she is the most unpopular one.  
 

She’s the most mature of the six, never really had to learn anything she didn’t already know, and that’s uninteresting to a lot of people.

Because back in the first few seasons it was perceived that she had the least screen time of mane six... Also, it's worth noting that she was jokingly referred to as best background pony, not just a background pony.

Applejack? Who is this "Applejack" pony that you speak of? Wasn't she only in like, three episodes of the entire series and had one line of dialog or something? She's a background pony because she's essentially been in like, no episodes of the show you guys!  You can't call a character (if you can even consider her a character because again, she was rarely seen in the show) who's been in like, two episodes a "mane 6 pony" like @AppleButt did. Geeze guys, you really just need to calm down and accept the fact that Twilight Sparkle will forever be the best pony ever

I think Applejack is called a "background pony" by the fandom because

 

people consider her to be bland when comparing her to the rest of the mane 6.

 

I do not feel this way however & I believe she is one of the most interesting members of the main cast.

The joke of being a background pony seems to stem from AJ being the most content character out of the Mane 6. She really has no defining goal to work towards in her long term development compared to some of the other Mane 6, except the farm but that's a gimme. TS has the princess of friendship. Rarity expanding her business. RD joining the Wonderbolts. FS over her shyness.

That's right.

To the people who are taking the Applejack is Best Background Pony badly,  Most people I know who called her best background pony usually says it with humor, not to be insulting. They know she's a main character, just one that doesn't go through that much change in their development or career throughout the show run. Just lighten up and don't take everything said on the Internet too seriously.

It’s an old fandom joke for her fewer appearances back then. The fact she’s clearly the least popular of the Mane 6 doesn’t do her any favors
