My roommate destroyed my MLP: FiM poster?

I've been at college for about 6 weeks now. Since I live in the dorms, I have to live with a roommate. His name is Kevin, and he's a pretty nice guy overall, but he's pretty close-minded when it comes to My Little Pony.

I don't talk about the show with him, or try to get him to like it. I watch My Little pony on my laptop (with my headphones in, so that Kevin can't hear it), I look at pony art, and post in pony forums. I haven't publicly displayed my love of the show to him...until now.

A few weeks ago, I ordered a My Little Pony poster from Ebay. It came in the mail today. The poster is pretty basic. It's a 22x26 print of a smiling Rarity, with a purple and black background. I hung it up over my desk, and thought nothing of it.

A little while later, my roommate walks into the room. He sets down his backpack, then looks at the poster. He stares at it for a few seconds, and says nothing. His phone starts to ring. He answers it. I can't hear the voice on the other end of the line, but I hear my roommate say,

"Yeah. it's still on for tonight. You can come over whenever, I guess..."

I see him cast a worried glance at the poster.

"Uh, yeah, sure. Bye." He hangs up the phone.

I ask him: "So you're having friends over tonight?"

"Yeah..."

"Ok."

Later that night, his friends come over. I had to go to my lab class that evening, so I wasn't there while his friends were in our dorm room. When I get back, my roommate's face is red, and he looks angry. (I think he might've been a little drunk too, so if his actions seem extreme, I think that's partly why)

"What's up?" I say.

He points to my poster.

"So...you're just gonna shove it in my face now, is that it?"

"Does it bother you or something?"

"Hell yeah, it does! It's a f****** pony!"

"You didn't have a problem with it earlier today..."

"Who WOULDN'T have a problem with it?? It's a f****** eyesore!!"

I shake my head in disbelief.

"Look...I know you're upset right now, let's not make a big deal about this. Maybe we should get some rest and--"

"F*** REST! Take it down, dude! It's freaking embarrassing!"

"I'm not taking it down, I paid 25 bucks for it! Look..did your friends make fun of you about it or something? Just tell them it's mine. And besides, there's no reason for people to laugh at it, it's just a tv show I like."

My roommate shakes his head and begins to laugh under his breath.

"What?" I say.

"No reason for people to laugh at it? C'mon, dude. You know it's wrong. Admit it. It's for little girls, and you don't want to admit it. I can see that."

"I--"

"Shhhhhhhhh...c'mon. I'll forget the whole thing, if you take it down right now. We can put this behind us, and--"

"Oh my God, dude...are you seriously...are you f****** kidding me right now? Are you really flipping out about something this trivial, this stupid, this--

"SHUT UP!!" Kevin yelled.

"That's it. I'm done. I'm leaving. F*** you." I said as I slipped out the door.

"Fine! Get outta here!" Kevin yelled as I left.

When I came back later that night, Kevin was gone. I found my poster ripped to shreds on the ground.

I am SO angry at him right now. He had NO right to do that! I waited a long time for that poster, and he destroyed it! I have no idea what to do. I am really, really disturbed by his reaction to my pony poster. I know he was probably drunk, but I don't know if I can continue to live with a guy that will have that extreme of a reaction to pony-related stuff. Do you think I should file a complaint to the dorm supervisor and switch roommates, or do you think I should talk to Kevin about it first? He seemed like a nice enough guy before this happened.

Update:

He came into our room a few minutes ago, and apologized to me. He said that the main reason he got so upset is that his friends said that they couldn't be friends with a guy who associated so closely with a "gay fag". He tried to explain that it wasn't his fault, and that he didn't choose me as his roommate, but they wouldn't listen.

I told him that those didn't sound like very good friends to me, but he said he didn't want to talk about it anymore, and then he went to sleep.

I didn't bring up the money, because he seemed tired and upset

Kill him.

Kill him now.

He has sinned. And shall pay the ultimate price.

I am quite confident that this shall solve your problem.

Sincerely,

Kestrel

I'm not actually serious.

Well, it's also HIS room. It was kind of rude of you to basically force a poster, with colorful ponies, onto him, especially when he brings friends to the place. You guys should actually talk to each other about stuff like that, instead of just going out and doing it.

I HAD TO FALL TO LOSE IT ALL BUT IN THE END IT DOESN'T EVEN MATTER /WRISTS

Well, it would have been nice of you to take it down while he had a friend over, but him destroying it as you describe was just outright wrong. You should try and make him pay you back. Or better yet, see if it'd be possible to switch rooms to get away from him. This seems like he might be trouble later.

We divided the room into two sections though. I put the Rarity poster up in my section of the room, so I didn't think it would be a problem. Besides, regardless of whose room it is, he destroyed my property. I hoped he would have kindly expressed his discomfort with the poster instead of freaking out over it like he did. That's what happens when you get drunk with a bunch of other judgmental people though *shrug*

seriously?

That is the perfect time to just leave him. Report him to the school, police, for vandalism, nobody should be destroying property of others.

Or you could've put the poster in a more private place of the dorm, if it would allow you.

I'm assuming you have an RA. This is a monetary issue. Request a refund for the money , then bring it up with the RA. Odds are, they'll be on your side, and you can get this taken care of. Then, when possible, change to a different room.

Only a douchebag could hate Rarity.

You have the rights to have a MLP Poster in your room, he has the right to not have one. Whose 'side' it is on doesn't matter. You hanging it up, knowing fully well that it will bother him makes you look like an inconsiderate person. The fact that he teared it down was kind of expected since he doesn't seem to be very talkative about his thoughts. You on the other hand smeared it all over his face. That wasn't smart either.

I also don't suggest to go 'report' this. What will you say? "He ripped my 25 bucks poster?"

Next time, don't forget that whatever rules you pretend to live by are just made up for convenience. If you don't have leverage you better play by those who has.

Just do what @, said. If the school doesn't take proper action against him (at least a refund of 25$) then take it the police. Thats bullshit and he shouldn't get away with it. I don't even know why you would make such a post when it's obvious what he should do.

He violated this guy's privacy and ruined his property. Make it sounds as trivial as you want, but this is serious business indeed.

You paid $25 for it?

Supply proof of this and demand that he compensate you for every penny (including postage). I also advise that you leave the little brat and find somewhere else to sleep (or have him kicked out as you are the victim in this case). As you have to live in such tight space, you should have asked if he was cool before putting up any poster. In saying that, his reaction was totally out of order.

Get that dweeb to pay you what he owes, and then cut all ties.

Just see what happens when he get's back, some people can be really nasty drunks then regret it when they sober up. He might apologize.

Move immediately or see if you can have him moved. It would probably be better if you were the one to go. I guarantee that this won't be the end of your problems with a guy like that.

Can you dig up a picture of the poster? I'm curious about it.

He owes you 25$ now I guess,I would talk about this situation to counselor, someone in charge of things like this.Plus you weren't really shoving ponies down his throat. It was just one poster.Possibly one of his friends did something to change his mind.Or his friends left him because of the poster.

He destroyed your property. He is kinda entitled to atleast give you money to repay the poster. If it doesn't happen that he repays you or you get moved from him after telling the school, you might as well tell the police or something.

It could get worse. Even if it sounds quite extreme to call the police, it may escalate into a bigger problem.

I don't know if i'd want to risk it. I'd try to get a refund from him then tell the school to either move or refund you or both.

Get a new roommate.

Honestly, though if no one else entered your guys' door room that night then he has no alibi and is culpable Talk to him first, maybe after a good night's sleep and see if tensions have cooled. If not, take it up with the school.

Your property was vandalized, you are entitled to compensation.

Pursue it. Tear out his throat. Its not his friends fault, its HIS fault. He needs to pay you back, apologize, and promise it will never happen again.

This isn't a case of someone "shoving it in the face of another" by any means. In fact, he's stated that they divided the room into two separate sections so that his was, in effect, walled off from the other side. That means his roomie had to intrude on someone else's private space and destroy property. However, if someone is that averse to a poster, he has serious issues. Honestly, a poster is not shoving it in anyone's face by any means. It's an innocuous piece of paper.

OP, you should talk to your RA, supply proof of your purchase and how much it was, demand a refund and demand a change in roommates. If this guy associates with people who are averse to "gay fags" as they so put it, you will have nothing but trouble. Even if you can't get your money back, cut your losses, be glad it wasn't expensive and get another roomie. Seriously.

I dunno, he seems so forlorn, down, and distant right now..I can't help but feel a tinge of sympathy for him. I shouldn't let him off the hook though since I'm a poor college student, and $25 is a pretty decent amount. Minimum wage is $7.25, so that's about 3 hours and 30 minutes of work right there for that poster.

Plus, I am pretty ticked. Rarity is my second-favorite pony, and he treated her like trash! I mean, it's not the REAL Rarity of course, but still...her image.

I think you're being a bit harsh...

While the matter should be pursued, it should be handled more delicately than you seem to be suggesting. I'd give him the benefit of the doubt, and CONSIDER not having him pay, but it seems that the best thing for both him and his room mate would be for one of them to see if they can be moved

.

Sleep on it, try to cool off, then confront him. Be respectful of his feelings (as I'm sure you will be), and he'll (hopefully) be respectful of yours.

Ripe him to shreds in exchange.

NOW NOW CHILDREN, LET'S NOT GET VIOLENT.

In all seriousness, that wasn't right of him to do. IDGAF of he looks down right now, that's your money and he should pay you back. And he owes you a bigger apology. Of course it's his fault, he's the one who ripped it up, not his d-bag "friends".

this happened to me as well, it was my laptop we have 1 laptop we shared everything i paid for it with my own money so we both could use it for school purposes, (Poor Kids here) but since i paid for it we both decided that i could have it set up as i would so i put my pics and stuff up just cause ya know i didn't see a problem with it when i was out at work some of his friends came by got on the laptop and just started to crucify him for it so he Broke it, when i was coming home from work he told me that our dorm had been broken into and some things where stolen one of them the laptop which was devastating, cause i had paid almost 600$ for that so it hit me hard, as i started to talk around and say yea some of my stuff was stolen and i wouldn't be able to go on with classes cause it had all my work on it, my friend cracked and told me he broke it cause was being mocked for the ponies on the laptop, which made me mad, but i have been working on my anger so i did get a little pissed and started yelling and all that, basically we almost lost our friendship the school refunded me for my laptop, with some of his Pellgrant, so i built my PC that i currently have now, its been about 3 months or so give or take he apologized gave me 600$ dollars as an apology i said keep it man, its not the money its the fact that you lied about it, which hurt me the most now we are back to friends he admitted to being Wrong and keeps trying to give me money , but yea its just that he lied and broke it outta his Ex-friends now because he didn't go out to a party with them and realized what he did was wrong, i told him look dude if you are embarrassed just change the picture when you have friends coming, to something else no big deal,

but yea I didn't even think about anything but revenge for what he had done, but now we are cool honestly just tell him if he pays you back that its simple and easy to move and hide if he is that embarrassed. over such a small thing

"Gay fags"? and instead of him saying "No, watching a cartoon does not make somebody homosexual" he instead tries to argue "Hey I didn't choose to room with him!"

Such a nice guy.
