mega thread What book are you reading?

I'm currently re-reading 1984. This is (of course) not only a great read, it also tells a lot of secrets. And it tells even more if you read between the lines.

Also, I'm reading We The Living by Ayn Rand. This is a great book! Ayn Rand writes dystopian stories as well that rival Orwell, in my opinion. This one in particular is set during the Russian revolution in Russia but with fictional characters.

Last but not least, I'm reading The Republic by Plato. This is very interesting and thought provoking read. I've recently became interested in philosophy so I wanted to check this classic out. :)

I am currently reading The Painted Man. It is a dark fantasy book, quite enjoyable to read, but sadly after about 3/4 of it it started to become a bit worse, because it becomes pretty predictable and

!!!SPOILER ALERT!!!

one of characters got turned into undefeatable OP who destroys creatures that are danger to humanity with his bare hands. Quite literally. Some people may like this, but for me making such character in the book that describes humanity's fate as uncertain one, where they can't even defeat their foe is ridiculous

Overall it IS worth reading, the world is interesting and sometimes quite secretive, but also dangerous, staying far from human settlements there is most likely a suicide. If You enjoy dark worlds stripped away of all those perfect, flawless protagonists You can give this book a try :) If You can survive flaws (or flaw if You avoided spoiler) mentioned above, that is.

Just finished 'Nyctophobia' by Christopher Fowler. A pretty good mystery/horror novel although, like most of the genre I find, not scary.

meh... books are for egg heads... and books slow you down....

Uh, fact, books don't slow you down. They're very good for you, as they help your creativity, imagination, and a bunch of other functions with the mind. They speed you up, in fact.

But it's odd, Im not reading any book atm. I haven't read all summer. Once school pops up again I'll be reading daily.

I'm currently reading The Possessed by Fyodor Dostoevsky.  I really love his novels; I've read Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, The Brothers Karamazov, and Notes from Underground.  They're all really philosophical and deep, not to mention engrossing.  I got through about 200 pages of this one on the train rides to and from Bronycon, which is reason enough to take the train.

I'm trying to read Immanuel Kant's Critique of Pure Reason. Even after Norman Kemp Smith's translation it's a tremendously dry and complicated book, and I'm of the opinion that Smith does not understand what a sentence is.

Current, I must read the german novel Tauben im Gras (in english pigeons in the grass) for my school because I write an exam about it in 2 1/2 weeks. It's really hard to read because the author Wolfgang Koeppen wrote in an really chaotic style. I mean, he wrote always in short sentences, the book has 30 different characters and all 2 sides, there is a switch from one to an other character and I don't find any structure in this. The book is about germany in the post-war era and explain themes like germany after the third reich, germany under the occupation of the victorious powers (mostly USA), the East-West conflict or atom weapons. I am happy when I am ready with this book.  :okiedokielokie:

Fun fact: Koeppen wanted to wrote the book without any punctuation mark, but the publisher was against the idea. Fortunately, because 270 sides without punctuation mark would be the horror.

As of August 23rd 2015, I am reading "The Norton Field Guide to Writing with readings and handbook". It was published in 2008, but still contains a lot of information about writing stuff from resumes to stories.
