During my time as a Brony, I've noticed that Rarity gets an awful lot of flack for being a sissy and a narcissist. She is also considered to be selfish. Hopefully by telling everyone the Five Things I Love About Rarity, maybe people will see she does more...and gives more...than she sometimes gets credit for.

1. Rarity is the most artistic pony in Ponyville.   When we hear the word artist, the first thing that comes to mind is someone brandishing a pencil or a paintbrush.  Rarity creates masterpieces with a needle and thread.  As a dress designer and a fashion expert, Rarity makes beautiful garments for a living.  Her handiwork inspires awe and garners widespread critical acclaim.  Unlike other kinds of art which are meant to be enjoyed alone, stylish attire has to be able accentuate the pony that is wearing it. Rarity has an amazing eye for an ensemble that will bring out the best in any client. As Pinkie Pie once said about Rarity, “Fashion is her passion.”  And just as Pinkie uses jokes, songs, and cupcakes to lift the spirits of a tired world, Rarity does the same thing through aesthetics.  This is also the first of several ways the unicorn lives out her Element of Generosity.  One of Rarity’s personal mottos is that a lady should be ready for anything.  You never know when a special event will come up, so it’s best to be prepared with an adequate wardrobe.  And Rarity’s belief in being prepared goes well beyond dresses and accessories as I will explain in point two.

2. Rarity’s artistry extends to martial arts.  Watch out, this unicorn can kick your ass!  You need to look no further than A Canterlot Wedding Part 2 to see why. Rarity didn’t have the firepower or superior strength her comrades did for fighting the Changelings.  So how was she able to knock out several well-trained enemy soldiers and emerge relatively unscathed?  Skill.  Rarity holds a black belt in kung hoof.  Ponder that for a moment.  This prissy prima donna who detests dirt, perspiration and hard work endured years of sweat, grueling training, and pain to master a major martial art. Just as Pinkie will set aside fun and games to address serious matters, Rarity will disregard her deepest personal aversions to attain important goals.  This shows just how much having the ability to protect herself and those she cares about means to her.  The self-denial needed to attain those skills is another expression of her generosity.

Rarity also engages in regular physical exercise and not just to retain her fillyish figure.  It takes a significant amount of conditioning and flexibility to be able to deliver those punches and kicks.  If she didn’t exercise at all, she would incur pulled muscles and other injuries any time she was forced to fight.  Therefore Rarity always stays in shape. Being fit also allowed her to convincingly portray Applejack in disguise during the big Sisterhooves Social race. Everyone was fooled, especially Sweetie Belle! The only thing I don’t know is why a pony like Rarity chose to develop such valuable fighting skills in the first place.  The cartoon doesn’t elaborate but she surely has her reasons. This is also one more clue that Equestria isn’t the all sunshine and rainbows playland of previous MLP generations satirically derided by Scootaloo in Sleepless in Ponyville

Master Yoda has a warning for the dragons. “Judge this book by its cover, do you?”

3. Her gem finding spell is a tangible sign of her Element of Generosity Rarity was minding her own business at school one day when her horn suddenly started to glow and led her far from town. Her “destiny”? A large, worthless looking boulder. But moments later, a flash of colorful light followed by a sonic boom cracked it to reveal a treasure trove of priceless gems. Rarity was never taught this spell.  It simply came to her as a gift from her Element of Harmony.  What’s even more amazing is that only high level unicorns like Twilight Sparkle are normally able to learn it.  This isn’t idle speculation on my part; it’s common sense. If any old unicorn could do this, Equestria’s surface would’ve been completely stripped of precious stones centuries ago.

4. Rarity has unsurpassed beauty, style, and grace.  By Equestria's standards, Fluttershy and Rarity are considered to be the prettiest ponies in Ponyville. But it is the glare of the spotlight that separates these two.  Here, Fluttershy withers whereas Rarity truly comes to life.  Self-confidence is a huge part of someone’s visual appeal.  Rarity has a commanding presence whether she is on the runway, at a photo shoot, attending a major affair, or working in the boutique she owns. She is every bit as gorgeous as the dresses she makes. Simply stunning!  img-1292103-1-wub.png

5. As time goes by, Rarity embodies the Element of Generosity more and more. A famous author had this to say about the different ways in which we give:

"You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of

yourself that you truly give." – Kahlil Gibran

Rarity's material generosity is not a big issue as she does fine in that regard.  Remember that in Suited For Success she didn’t hesitate to make two dresses for each of her best pony pals at no cost to them.  Rarity’s main downfall is that she doesn’t always give of herself the way she should. She is often preoccupied with her business and other concerns. Critics call her a self-centered drama queen and an attention whore.  And to tell the truth, these misgivings about her are occasionally justified. There is nothing generous about any of that.  As a result, she is often called the pony who least lives up to her Element of Harmony.  But all of this doesn’t mean that Rarity is a failure.  It means she’s human.

For most of us, there is a wide gap between the person we are and the person we want to be.  But that doesn’t mean we should stop trying to close that gap. Many of us will struggle with this for our whole life.  Lord knows Rarity hasn’t quit trying to improve herself.  Despite backsliding from time to time, she continues to rise above her own temptations and faults to be a better daughter, sister, and friend.  Rarity has grown significantly as a person, and part of the reason for this is clear. Along with Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, and Applejack, Rarity is just as much a student of Princess Celestia as Twilight Sparkle is.  All six of them have benefited greatly from the lessons learned about friendship.  Twilight’s buddies aren't just along for the ride either. They're all on the same journey with a common destination. And for one shining moment, Rarity was as flawless as the most exquisite diamond.  In Magical Mystery Cure she joined her closest friends to form the perfect love needed to carry out Star Swirl's special spell properly.  To fulfill her role in that process, Rarity gave from her entire heart and soul.  If that's not being generous, then what the hell is?

Epilogue:

Princess Celestia’s six most famous pupils have taught me so much about friendship and why I shouldn’t judge people or ponies by superficial appearances.  Therefore I’m enclosing my five point review for each one of them in my next letter to her.  I hope she is proud of me for everything I have learned.

And guys?  Don’t just read it and leave. Please tell me what you thought about this and my entire Five Reasons series.  img-1292103-2-wink.png

Ah, I remember this thread, gotta be the best thread on the forum I'd say. It's no secret that I've loved Rarity for ages now, in fact I'm probably one of the longest-lasting Rarity fans here, she's just the best. :D

If Rarity painted or made music, people would go "ooh, she's such a creative". Rarity does the EXACT SAME SORT OF THING except with cloth, and suddenly she's prissy and shallow. That's like saying that being a musician makes you a Justin Beiber fangirl giggling at concerts, or being a painter makes you a pretentious art critic. Nobody says that. And yet they extend completely unfair stereotypes of the consumers to the creator. You make a perfect point here.

Rarity constantly makes comments about appearances not because she is shallow, but because her life passion is using fashion as her art medium. And it affects how you see things. When I do a lot of photography, for example, I act differently even without a camera. I reposition myself, even in completely mundane events, for the best angle. Why? I'm not planning to take a picture. I am just looking at the world through an artistic mindset. So is Rarity. Even when she was supposed to be dealing with the weather in Magical Mystery Cure, she couldn't help but try to make the clouds look nice. In Winter Wrap Up, she was designing nests for birds, and yet she made stylish nests.

Another awesome thing about Rarity; she isn't a rich girl like her character type often is. She's lowborn and has to snap up every status-increasing and money-making opportunity she can get (and was hit hard by Suited For Success). The false eyelashes are a perfect touch; they emphasize how even her appearance wasn't given to her, but cultivated. When Rarity found her cutie mark, it probably changed things the least of the Mane 6. It wasn't a ticket to success for a fashion career. She did all that by herself. That accent? Undoubtedly affected and practiced over many years. Some call Rarity artificial, and there's some truth to that. But the sort of hard work that what she has done requires? Nobody can say it isn't authentic.

More than that, even though she's had to do more work than anypony to get where she is, she is completely willing to give it up for her friends. "Not element of generosity" my hoof. It's easy to be generous when there's nothing at stake. It's much harder to be generous when you're barely scraping by.

Bronies give Rarity such a hard time. sad.png You don't have to care about fashion to like her! She is a wonderful pony, worthy of respect and admiration. She's as committed to excellence as Rainbow Dash, as hard-working as Applejack, and respects her role models as much as Twilight Sparkle. She's the pony everybody should know, dammit!

Oh my, I wish she wouldn't look at me like that...

Okay. I had literally no idea that we had a Rarity fan club. I've only ever seen the Fluttershy one, to be honest, and that's because I followed a link in someone's sig.

Anyhoo...

It took me a while to realize Rarity was best pony. She's a bit of an acquired taste, I suppose. At first, I didn't like her because I thought the whole 'Drama Queen' thing was overdone. It was Mean Girls just hyped up a notch and all put into a single pony. I never really had much to do with her until, one day, I was listening to 8-bit pony music playlist on Youtube, and a tune came on I didn't really recognize. I never really paid much attention to the Rarity episodes, so I was intrigued by the song, which turned out to be this rendition of Art of the Dress.

And was surprised that it was Rarity singing it in the normal version. I gave the real version a listen, since I hadn't really been paying it much attention the first time I watched the episode it was from. And I was very impressed.

Now, I'm a huge band geek, so the fact that I now considered Art of the Dress one of the series' best songs, as well as Rarity's other one in the Pony Everypony Should Know naturally piqued my interest in her character as a whole. And when I looked under the surface, I fell in love.

And that's even without getting into the whole artistic side of her. I never really thought about dressmaking and fashion as art before. I mean, sure, there was a Phineas and Ferb episode that stated that fashion was art quite literally, but that doesn't really count, as the message didn't sink through. It took a Rarity to knock that concept through my head that fashion is art, and being scattered all over the artistic realms like I am, I fell even harder into the Rarity fandom.

Also I love her accent. Mid-Atlantic English. I'm thinking of trying to adopt that dialect myself.

This is the best writeup on Rarity I've ever seen.  She's my favorite, and you've really done her justice here!  I'll just chime in on afew points:

During my time as a Brony, I've noticed that Rarity gets an awful lot of flack for being a sissy and a narcissist. She is also considered to be selfish. Hopefully by telling everyone the Five Things I Love About Rarity, maybe people will see she does more...and gives more...than she sometimes gets credit for.

Right on the nose here, When people look good, they feel good. And I think that;s ultimately what Rarity wants to spread- After all, as the saying goes, Clothes make the Man (er, Mare).

I've always wondered why there aren't more Rarity fans in the fandom, given how big the Brony artist community is- after all, she's an artist at heart. I can imagine that anyone who's ever done commissions can relate to her experiences in "Suited for Success".

This is also one more clue that Equestria isn’t the all sunshine and rainbows playland of previous MLP generations satirically derided by Scootaloo in Sleepless in Ponyville.

As far as fitness goes, that ties into another quality of hers that I like- For all of that "ladylike-never-break-a-sweat" image she gives off, she is second to only Applejack in her willingness to dig in and work herself to the bone. And this not only includes cutting and sewing of material and whatnot, but also actually going out and hitting the mines for all the gems she needs *herself*. I'd imagine that Spike's not *always* going to be there to help her. Carrying those gems home is going to take an awful lot of strength.

And what does she do when she finds those gems? Hoard them for herself? Sell them to make herself rich? No, she uses them to make great costumes for other ponies while she stays behind the scenes.

Now *that* is the element of generosity.

Yeah, not a lot to add here. She's gorgeous. biggrin.png

5. As time goes by, Rarity embodies the Element of Generosity more and more. A famous author had this to say about the different ways in which we give:

Holy crap you guys know how to write up on Rarity

I barely skimmed through all of the comments above me

And so far, from what I can tell, you guys are all 100% correct

And I stand firm when I say that Rarity is the best pony from the mane 6

Rarity has been my favorite pony ever since I first became a Brony back in July, and one of the reasons that I even became one.  She just has so much character, there's nothing bland at all about her.  She's just such a fun character to watch, and she's one of the only character that can overreact without being annoying.  Basically, if it wasn't for Rarity, I wouldn't be here right now.

Thanks for the feedback. :)

There are a few more things about Rarity I would've touched on, but the cartoon doesn't give us enough info for intelligent speculation. I didn't want my article on her to get too big either.  So I'll throw out some random questions and give what I think is a reasonable answer to each one.

Why did Rarity develop a "haughty" sounding Mid-Atlantic accent? Maybe she just got tired of the Wisconsin accent she heard while growing up? It wouldn't be very helpful in her line of work either.  And why not just adopt a full-fledged British accent if she wants to sound fancy?

Is her "fashion for passion" an attempt to fill a void in her life like Pinkie's party antics are? MLP:FiM gave Pinkie a number of episodes which offer a glimpse inside her crazy head. Rarity hasn't received this treatment yet so I can't make assumptions here.

What is her true income level relative to other ponies? Her income is very hard to gauge because she runs a business. Most of the money she makes go to overhead and other business related expenses. She probably doesn't have a whole lot of spending money for herself. Her shop and dresses make her look richer than she is. So when she gives away gems and free or discounted dresses, she's being quite generous.

Why does Rarity aspire to be with upper income or royal ponies? I think she wanted to hang out with celebrities because they are her target demographic as a dress maker. She found the glitz and glamor to be alluring as well. And the rich always appear to have it easy. But as time goes on, she seems to be learning that she can have the best of both worlds. Rarity can be with those who mean the most to her in Ponyville while still selling her products to high rollers. The more her renown in fashion grows, the less she actually feels she needs to move to Canterlot for her career to succeed. And that's a great thing because Rarity has much more in common with her down to earth Ponyville neighbors and friends than upper class types anyway.

I might be able to spread some light on this. Mid-Atlantic English was widely considered a happy medium between American English and British English, blending both to where it is not predominately either, and is therefore recognisable and distinct in either country. Mid-Atlantic English is still highly regarded in theatre, where it is taught regularly, and use d to be among the American upper class. It was mainly popular there, and in Hollywood, between the 1930's and 60's.

I'd imagine that the accent of American Aristocrats would appeal to Rarity for a number of reasons. One, it elevates her status while still recognising her humble beginnings, in that it is neither predominantly 'fancy' British nor 'plebeian' American. With an accent thus, she still sounds upper-class, where she aspires to be, while still retaining ties to her roots.

Do you think that the Canterlot ponies would give her a second glance if she talked like she was from Wisconsin? And surely if she adopted a purely "Queen's English" accent, Ponyville will think she's left it behind for bigger and better things, as happens so often. It's an elegant compromise between her two worlds.

The fact that it's popular in theatre might have played a part in it, too. After all, she is a drama queen. So naturally, the dialect of those who participate in drama would seem quite appealing.

There have been times I've seriously considered training myself to speak in Mid-Atlantic English instead of in my natural, mildly Southern accent.

Currently reading a fanfic entitled "Sophistication And Betrayal", which features Rarity in a...close...relationship with an unnamed human protagonist (second-person perspective). While mature, it does feature a jackpot of character development, including for Rarity.

P.S. - I always skip through the...moments of truth...if you want to call them that; not my cup of tea.

I absolutely LOVE Rarity. I constantly think about her. Both in pony and Equestria Girl form. I was able to order her Equestria Girls doll early and I am in love with it!

Isn't she gorgeous?! (I cut her hair for your information)

Definitely an interesting character. I'm not that surprised that alot of people did not like her before. But man  when those episodes come out that showcase a specific pony like Rarity in the Diamond Dog episode it really makes you look at the character in a different light. I really like the VO that does Rarity's voice work too. Tabitha does a phenomenal  job encasing Rarity's character and the people behind MLP do a fine job at making what fasion not so boring and overly girly which I like. smile.png

Wingnut makes best explanations of what makes everypony in the show awesome :).

You make wonderful well thought out and detailed points as always wingnut, always love reading them.

I couldn't do any better, so I really am not in the place to critique, and really I don't find anything to critique really anyways, you do well with this stuff all the time :).

Anyways, I think Rarity is a very interesting and Great character as I do all the other main 6. I hope the fact that shes not my favorite despite me liking her character as I like all the others doesn't do anything to exclude me from being apart of this somewhat :P.

The reasons I like Rarity, well first of all, I have to say that Rarity wasn't a character I liked at first, she looked like that diva girl thats in alot of shows who is normally annoying to me quite frankly. And honestly it took a while even after becoming tolerable of her for me to like her.

Although through watching the show further I have learned to appreciate Rarity! And I also enjoy coming into these fanclub threads and such to hear more reasons to love her as I do with each character, because again I enjoy the show more when I enjoy the characters more, makes sense right?

Rarity is definitely a great character for many reasons, some I'm not even aware of frankly. Personally I like the fact that although she looks like a stereotypical diva girl she is actually much more complex then that, and is actually a good character, who isn't annoying at all frankly.

She has a great voice, of course I think all the mane 6 have great voices... But still. Her voice actor is highly talented aswell. Her singing voice is also great as the other mane 6 voices, not sure where she stacks up exactly, but its great regardless.

I also like how even though she isn't one to get dirty, she would do so when its required to help her friends, and her generosity is taken so far at times she totally neglects her own needs(See "Suited for Success").

Sure she isn't always generous, but just because shes the Element of generosity doesn't mean shes suppose to be perfectly generous all the time, None of the other ponies always follow their Elements really. But it just shows they all have flaws like us, even in things they are.

I must also say that Rarity is a very funny character at times to watch, her dramatization of things isn't really annoying to me, and is actually something I've come to find very funny and enjoyable :D.

Overall Rarity is a very well made character, as I believe all the mane 6 are! And I've really still got many things to understand about the parts of her greatness in her character!

So yeah, hopefully I can feel included, (even if I might end up to busy to post here anyways xD.)

Also.. Rarity definitely is lacking episodes I believe. I hope she gets some good ones in S4.

No pony is even remotely close to being near comparing to Rarity. She is just too amazing <3 I really wish she got more love from the community :(

Anyone else REALLY approve of the fact that she is a lesbian (100% positively confirmed)? I was iffy at first, but YES. That is so cool.

Rarity is pretty awesome. Rarity being a lesbian? I've heard Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy lesbian theories but never a Rarity one...Interesting

Rarity is the only pony whose sexuality is proven, and she is a lesbian. The actress who plays her actually tweeted it as a response to a fan.

When was Rarity 100% positively confirmed to be a lesbian? Where are you getting that information from? Maybe you could provide a link or something to show where you read that.

I edited your response a little, because otherwise it would have been hidden as a CMV. I hope you don't mind.

Anyway, I wouldn't really call that "100% positively confirmed". And flat-out, what we see in the show doesn't point that way. She was definitely making eyes at Fancy Pants at the end of "A Canterlot Wedding", and even pushed other ponies aside to grab the bouquet, indicating a wish to get married. Unless Equestria has same-sex marriage, which is not impossible.

Well, she has less of a taste in males. This is quoted from the woman who plays Rarity. How in all of Equestria could it be more confirmed? O.o She could just be bi, I suppose. Oh and btw, I am a simple poster :) Feel free to edit anything you like ^-^ and maybe she just liked the flowers! XD

I think Rarity gets the most hate because she isn't very simple, she is a very complex character.

You can tell when growing up she wanted to be something fabulous however her parents are obviously different. She aspires to be something more than any other pony in the series (In my opinion).

And that's why I love her <3

@@Rarity_Sts, to me it sounds like you want her to be a lesbian and that's not fair, if it were by our fandom, all the ponies would be lesbians already. The closest of having a relationship with the opposite gender was Rarity, when she showed interest in Prince Blueblood (eeck!) in season 1. But sexuality is not anything that should concerns us regarding the show, it's obviously something not explored there.

Well, she has less of a taste in males.

Since Rarity has shown the most interest in romance and her crush was in fact a guy (Prince Blueblood) I think she is probably the least likely to be a lesbian, it is possible she might be bi though I think Pinkie Pie or Rainbow Dash would be a bit more likely to fall under that category.

Since I am here, I have been writing this one fanfic starring Rarity which actually has sort of forced me to see things a bit more from her point of view and has made me start to like her a bit more which has made her go up in my favorite pony list. The story is called Rarity Gets Cockroaches which was inspired by a nasty cockroach problem I got thanks to some messy neighbors, you can see the story here.
