technology Why do certain websites hate Adblock?

~Rule 63~ Lyeco

Recommended Posts

I was searching what is the reactions of other people about adblock. I expected a positive one. But....

It ended up the opposite

No, it's not about the technical errors but how it results to other websites.

I saw reactions like...

"It ruins the free internet!"

Or websites saying...

"Please whitelist us from adblock!"

"Please turn off your adblock to access this page"

So I asked myself why?

Why do they hate it. It's like they are forcing us to be annoyed even if we don't want to be annoyed.

It is simply revenue. Advertisements are a quick way of making a few pence per click and on websites like this, they're unobtrusive, it's not so bad.

Websites that have pop-ups though? I hope the owners of them drink bleach.

People get annoyed because they don't get money and they want money to run their websites (people put ads on their websites, adverts do not go around and hack websites to put their silliness on it, people get paid for this). I hope that answers your question about "why do certain websites hate adblock"

Reactions about other people hating adblock being negative?

People hold the opinion that it's their rightful money if they have put adverts up and using adblock stops that right. I disagree though because

Well gee, it's not like these sites have ads on them for a reason, and they rely on ad revenue to make their living, and using adblock basically means that they get nothing.

I have adblock for the websites that have ads, like, everywhere. I don't feel bad blocking these ads because they are obstructive and the old people using the websites don't get rid of the ads. Also, some ads that come up cause disruptions to web surfing and even viruses.

If a website asks us not to use adblock, however (like Equestria Daily), and I know that they can be trusted, then I don't use adblock on their page. It is good for these websites to make money so that they can continue to run without making people pay subscriptions to access their website, lol.

As said above, it is simple. Ads make money, Adblock blocks ads, therefore blocks money. It seems like quite a few websites are still unable to get by regularly even with ads though, this forum and HCRealms.com being two examples of that (I know that ads are not a 'requirement' here, but most click yes to them). I use Adblock mainly because ads, even non intrusive ones, tend to slow my PC's browser down. Yeah, my laptop sucks (Tip: Avoid Gateway at all costs). I have donated here multiple times so I don't exactly feel bad and plus I do tons of browsing on my non-Adblocked tablet anyways. So, someone is making money from me one way or another.

There are certain websites that CAN be trusted with the use of ads to make money, like EqD and Hulu, but most other websites with ads such as YouTube can be quite annoying, as they tend to lag at times while watching different videos where ads are always lurking on about. especially when they would end up lagging around whilst browsing videos. Other than that, ads make money for websites, but they can greatly hinder people's activities and even anger them.

As many have said above, it's pretty much purely revenue. It is a nice thing to set up a white list though and have a list of trustworthy sites you want to support. You aren't inclined to, but it's just a nice thing to do and it supports the content you enjoy. Some sites really overload their page with ads, some of which can be malicious.

That's how Antivirus 2010 nearly killed my machine 3 years ago. I was able to recover because I store weekly backups, but it was a nasty virus. Clicking on the close button still installs the virus, just for the record.

Revenue.

they gives sites revenue....so much per click of the ad.....even though I never click on any of the ads on websites...Sites look and run better without these ads.

I actually had some ads getting past my Adblock the other day....couldn't figure out why..thought it was some spyware that installed itself, no...it was Google.

I installed the plug in called "Ghostery" and it fixed my unwanted ad issues....I was getting ads on websites I had never seen before...like I was getting a Snowmobile ad on this forum. and some ads weren't even in english, they were russianor hindu or something...

I whitelist websites I trust, such as these forums and YouTube, adverts generate revenue for websites and content creators, in some cases it's the owners only source of income. It costs you noting to view an advert but it gives them something for their efforts, the only time Adblock is a good thing is on websites that use pop up adverts.

I respect your thoughts as I also do the same, but at the time of need especially when I am not working on something very crucial. Don't you think it creates trouble when you're searching for content related to your thesis or something important like that and you get pissed off when a pop up arises on your screen and you're all stuck? Well, that's the reason most of people use pop up ad blocker. Isn't it?

Money. Lots of sites make their money off of advertisements. How do you think sites like Equestria Daily stay afloat? Ads, that's how. Websites hate adblock because, without ads, they wouldn't be able to keep their website. It's just that simple. Granted, though, I use adblock, because ads are annoying, especially on YouTube.

Don't ads only make money if you click on the ad? Correct me if I'm wrong. I always thought that just loading the ad on the page with the rest of the content doesn't do anything.

Granted you cannot click on an ad you don't see; so either way the site owner would prefer you view the ads. But if you're like me and have only clicked on an ad a few times in their lives (by accident), does it make any effective difference to the site whether or not you have an ad blocker?

Yeah well Youtube does that absolutely obnoxious intolerable shit; putting 30 second unskippable ads at the start of every fifth video.

Yeah, haha I THINK NOT.

I tend not to run adblock. If a site runs ads I find annoying, I just stay away from that site. On the plus side, it results in conversations like this.

"Morning, sir. The full-page popup you requested is running, sir."

"Excellent! How much has our click-through rate increased?"

"Negative five-thousand percent."

I don't see what's so intolerable about YouTube though. TV works the same way - only with MORE video ads. They serve you high-bandwidth content with very little effective way of monetizing it, AND they now pay the producers who reupload pirated copies of anime, and low-effort Lets Plays, for them. Even if they do everything badly, people still make use of them, and they've gotta make money somewhere, right?

Well advertisements are way for the website to earn revenue (I believe). To have them blocked and the companies who provide the money to become aware of this would dissuade the donors to donate if people are just going to block their ads. Surprisingly, this website tells us to use an ad blocker if we have "ads enabled".

It's 'cause ads make money. Websites need money to run, and so they ask adblock users to whitelist. Personally, I don't give a shit.

The ads are able to provide them with revenue, and adblock prevents the websites from getting the money that they receive from the advertisements.

Interesting point you've made, but as far as I know, every little to bigger business has its website, isn't it? When they're already making money through their businesses, then why don't they allow ad blocking software to cleanse their websites and leave making money through ads?

It's a mystery that even I can't solve, they could be a bit stubborn.

Look on the bright side, at least the government won't take the web away from us.

For some, it's a source of revenue.

If you try to block ads on the Bro Team Forums, a picture of a skeleton sticking it's middle finger and tongue out takes their place, with words saying

"THANKS FOR BLOCKING ADS, HACKER

I'M HUNGRY"

Because they can't get more ad revenue. Not a bad thing to complain about honestly, some sites need it to stay up
