Of course, of course, a “Pony” is a Miniature Horse (just like the majority of Characters on the show and in the toy line). But many of you have probably noticed for a long time that Princess Celestia is considerably taller (and longer) than the average Pony.

Now Princess Celestia was refefrred to as a “Pony” in “Dragon Quest” when Garble calls Princess Celestia “a nabby panny Pony Princess”; but Garble didn’t seem to have seen Princess Celestia before, and therefore probably didn’t know how tall she was compared to the average Pony.

To me, perhaps the characters of the show would refer (in socialization) to Princess Celestia as a “Pony” as the word “Pony” is very well often used in place of “People”, “Person” and “Body” (sometimes, a little too much; for example on “MMMystery on the Friendship Express”, Twilight Sparkle tells “Every-Pony” to go to their rooms when in fact she is talking to more than just Ponies, specifically Spike the Dragon and Gustave le Grand the Griffon, both of whom are NOT horses at all); however, just as the Ponies know (at least as far as I’m concerned) that they are all horses (and that Dragons, Griffons, etc. are not horses at all), they are likely also well aware that Princess Celestia is much taller than the average Pony and therefore would probably find it a little unusual to refer to her as a “Pony” instead of a “Horse”.

So what do you think? Is Princess Celestia a “Pony” or a “Horse”?

I've always kind of just put "pony" and "horse" under that same category for this show.

They're not the same creature in real life, but the MLP ponies could pass for either one. They're small, but their proportions just make me think of horses, especially characters like Big Mac.

I call them ponies because they call themselves ponies.

And Celestia is of the same species, so she is a pony as well.

Well, while it is true that ponies are mainly classified IRL by their size, there are also some species which are generally just considered ponies regardless of if they actually fit the size requirements for ponies.

According to some research i did, ponies are to be no higher then 58 inches(Or 147Cm's) from the ground to their withers(basically where they're body and neck connects somewhat.

Thats basically 4 ft 10 inches, so depending upon the size of the ponies the show ponies may not even themselves qualify as true ponies.

Celestia might not either, however possibly because of the nature of the show, and maybe how certain breeds of horses are just called ponies by default at times, its possible shes still considered a pony.

Besides, i think shes refereed as a pony most of the time, and as an Alicorn, which is essentially a type of pony in Equestria.

So i'd say shes probably a pony, or atleast i'm referring to her that way, calling her a horse is a needless complication anyways.

There are several references to her being a pony in the show. The most blatant is the 'Castle of the Royal Pony Sisters'. Also, in show she is seen standing next to two 'Saddle Arabians' who are distinctly different in head and leg shape and resemble horses far more than Celestia.

And actually ponies aren't 'miniature' horses, if we want to get technical. Miniature horses are a separate set of breeds created in the 17th century, that are less than 38 inches at the withers and retain the horse conformation of long legs, 'thin' body and head. Ponies are a set of breeds that are less than 58 inches at the withers, with a heavier 'draft' conformation with short legs, heavier body and head. If you stand a miniature horse and a pony of the same size next to each other, it's pretty obvious which one is which. Most ponies and drafts are also far more robust than miniature and full-sized horses, able to subsist on feed that a regular horse simply can't.

It's reaching the point that there's some debate that ponies and draft horses have actually become their own subspecies of Equus ferus separate from Equus ferus caballus that contains regular and miniature horses, or are a sub-subspecies. Coincidentally, the modern giant draft horses were also created in around the 17th century, as prior to that horses simply didn't get that big.

Then there are dwarf horses, which are even smaller and are due to a genetic glitch that can happen in any breed. :)

I'm pretty sure she's supposed to be a pony but wow, even the two Saddle Arabians are smaller than her. :D

And maybe that's what being a alicorn is. being born a horse.

If you think about the alicorn statue in Castle Maneia.

Like a horse

Luna  looks like a pony. Maybe one of their parents is an alicorn horse?

Meh, it's just about magic. The bigger the stronger. Prepare yourselves for a big Twilight.

Yeah, that statue right there raises a lot of interesting questions. Is that supposed to be just artistic, or is it supposed to be a *specific* alicorn like many old real-life statues. If it's specific, who is it supposed to be? One of Celestia's parents? Celestia herself? Did she look like that once, or again, is it artistic license?

A pony who gained her position of power by surviving a brutal initiation where her legs were pulled and stretched on a rack.  It was extremely painful.  Celestia hasn't told Twilight yet what hell she'll have to go through to become her successor.  Hell Luna didn't finish the pulling process so she's not as big as her.  It's also why Luna never became Celestias successor.

...What!?

Where did you come up with that?

Wait, I don't want to now; I just needed to write more in order to post this as 20 characters is the minimum.

I think they're all ponies, whether they are colts/fillies or mares/stallions. I don't think they call Celestia a horse. It's not a serious thing the show has talked about.

Granny Smith calls her "the most regal of all ponies". So I think she's just a really big pony.

But I voted horse anyway, for silly inside joke purposes. Long story short, my siblings and I often use the term "horse plan" for elaborate and manipulative setups when playing chess, because knights can often make sneaky unexpected moves. And that's exactly what Celestia does all the time, and therefore she must be a horse

Horse definitely. Luna is a horse too, but she's younger and therefore shorter. Celestia and Luna have artificially lengthened their lifespans. Blandence and Twilight Sprinkles are upgraded ponies.

Pegasi aren't even ponies, they're highly derived equines, that branched off even before the hyracotheres.

Well, they do reference the word ''pony'' since the show is My Little Pony after all. So, she is a pony.

well, you can't just call her a pony, i mean big mac is an extra big pony and he's small next to her.

Heh now i wanna see people make a bunch of over sized oc ponys.

no magical powers, just celestail sized.

That's because, Big Mac is a stallion and Celestia is a very tall alicorn if you compare them in size and height.

I would most likely say she is a pony. Besides, its My Little Pony. Why refer to the fact that she's a horse if it simply goes to the title. But than again what about this character?

delegate_mare_from_saddle_arabia_by_onea

She really resembles a horse and looks rather different from the regular ponies in the show. The main difference about her is the fact she has no cutiemark.
