Romantic Relationship involving the Mane 6

I don't really care much for anything involving romance in the show, because it doesn't matter to me whether there is a developed romance in the works or if the relationship doesn't develop at all. If it's done well, do whatever it takes to not mess it up.

It'd be weird to see some stallion (or mare) walk in and take her.  I'd also get rather jealous....more than likely.   I don't like competition. I don't want to go through what the Twilight fans went through with Flash Sentry.  There's no room for anypony else in our relationship.  

 

Though, I'm sure I could convince Discord to do something if there happen to be somepony walk in and steal my waifu....

I'd keep romance involving main characters out of the show; one of the reasons why is that there's no noticeable benefit from it becoming canon, unless of course it had a truly significant impact on the chemistry of the show, but then that would also have problems. And if the show is going to explore romance, I think it would be best to use supporting/side characters rather than the main ones that we have been with since the start, especially since a love interest for one of the main characters would require A LOT of character development and screen time of their own.

I would have to go with no just because I want to stay on the side of safety. If it gets added, there is no going back. Also, if one of the mane six gets a romantic partner, I feel their status as a character goes up above the others. It is sort of the fear that Twilight would become more important than the others. It didn't happen, but everyone was afraid it would happen. So just to spare everyones emotions, I think it would be wise not to. Plus, haters, cloppers (not that I have anything against individual people), non bronies, and more would have a field day with the concept.

I like romance in fanfic and fanart, but IMO it has no place in the show itself. A long term romantic relationship involving main characters would be really out of place for FiM.

I think I would be alright with it, so long as it's not all the Mane 6. Not everyone needs to have a relationship.

 

Also, the writers would have to pull it off really well. Which I firmly believe they would do, if they risked it. Whether or not they'll risk it, though, is another matter entirely.

 

Of course, if they canonize one or more of the Mane 6 getting a coltfriend, there might be some pressure from the liberal community to canonize one of them getting a marefriend. And then if they didn't do that, a lot of liberals would probably get huffy about it, but if they did, a lot of conservatives would likely get just as mad.

 

I suppose they could try to appease the conservatives (myself included) by trying to explain the idea that it's possible to not think homosexual behavior is right and to simultaneously not think any less of those who practice it. But that'd be real hard to do, and just about any way they did it, it would probably offend a lot of the liberals again. So they'd end up with everyone offended equally.

 

Point is, it seems doubtful that it will happen, but if they managed to do it well, do it tactfully, and do it without angering anyone for reasons beyond destroying headcanon, I'd have no issue with it.

Like the op, I would wait and see before judging, but I personally would rather the show keep friendship as the main focus if romance were introduced. We could see an episode about how friendships are affected when one or both of the friends get romantic partners, and watch the characters learn how to overcome the struggles associated with those new dynamics. Or we could see an episode that delves into the craziness that occurs when friends fall in love, or when one friend falls in love but it's unrequited (an episode that's fully devoted to exploring Spike's crush on Rarity could work).

 

I'd like to see an episode where Rainbow Dash makes friends with a stallion and her girlfriends (mostly Rarity) speculate that this new guy must have a crush on Dash. He doesn't, but Dash doesn't know that and she starts to feel all weird about the friendship until the situation is resolved somehow. The lesson is that it is possible for girls and boys to be just friends, despite what the people observing that friendship might think.

It's a tough question. As we know, MLP is about friendship. I've certainly seen firsthand that romantic interests can cause issues in said friendships (e.g Exes, people not getting on etc).

 

However, the question which remains is whether or not we would want this kind of storyline in MLP. I could certainly think of a few arguments against this:

• Doing a proper romance story would fulfill the ancient girls' cartoons cliche and go directly against what Lauren Faust set out to do with the show.
• A relationship (at least involving one of the Mane 6) would require some sort of permanent change to the character dynamics presuming they didn't just spontaneously break up at the end of the episode.
• It could potentially skirt on touchy political territory, depending on how it's handled

On the other hand, I could think of some arguments in favour too:

• Having a romantic relationship will allow us to see certain sides of the characters which we wouldn't otherwise see (i.e how they would react in a... closer relationship)
• If relationships are an issue within the friendships of girls, then perhaps the show should address it constructively whether or not the fans think doing so is socially/thematically appropriate
• If written well, the writers could come out with something which actively challenges the stupid ways in which romance can be portrayed - whilst still delivering a decent story.

Ultimately, it really depends on what you think the show should be about and how much trust you place in the writing staff to deliver.

Seriously, though, it's a kids' show, so they're not going to stray far out of familiar territory for this sort of thing. That means little more than schoolfoal crushes and subtle flirting for the Mane 6. Only the few characters already established as being married are going to be seen to be in a relationship.
