Equestria's Geography

Just how small is Equestria? In The Return of Harmony 1 and 2, it appears Canterlot is just a brisk gallop away from Ponyville considering the girls just up and ran there when Celestia needed them and calmly trotted back to Ponyville after getting discorded. Same with Cloudsdale. Fluttershy drops from the sky in the Cutie Mark Chronicles and 20 seconds later she's down on the earth, assuming it's Ponyville.

Rainbow's house is kinda halfway between Ponyville and Cloudsdale yet it's very easy to fly up to (as shown in Return of Harmony pt 2).

I guess the furthest town is Appleloosa considering they needed a train, but I feel Equestria is a very small world, perhaps equivalent to the size of a US state where the major cities are equivalent to counties.

A little world for little ponies.

Fillydelphia is close too since the parasprite ball rolled over there. Isn't known how close Manehattan is yet.

Actually, I'd say that Equestria is a huge country, and probably the largest country in the world.

Like you said, Canterlot isn't too far away from Ponyville, but I'd say it would still be about 30ish miles.I mean, there would be no reason to create a town if it was so close to another, and the fact that both of the times we see the one of the Mane 6 traveling there, its in either a Chariot, or a Wagon. So I doubt its close enough to just up and visit there for a day.

Tl;Dr: Ponyville is a ways from Canterlot.

And Ponyville is on the edge of the Everfree forest, but the fact that such a forest can have odd super natural(Or natural in our case) powers, and house a large and diverse ecosystem of monsters suggests that it is an extremely large forest, if not endless. And the fact that it holds the old castle of the solar goddesses suggests that the Everfree Forest wasn't always in the state its in now. It could of even been an 'old Equestria' before some apocalyptic event forced them to leave the land, letting it grow and evolve on it's own.

Tl;Dr: The Everfree Forest is extremely large.

And another city that would show Equestria is large is Manehatten. Manehatten is an incredibly large city, with skyscrapers, statues, everything. It could even be safe to assume it is the largest city in Equestria. Its also a ways from Ponyville, as seen here. While its hard to tell exactly how far it is from Ponyville, because of the angle AJ is looking at it from, I'm gonna give a rough estimate and say its between 80-120 miles away.

Tl;Dr: Manehatten is huge, and still a ways from Ponyville.

And Cloudsdale... I don't think I can give much of an estimate about it's distance. It too is a large city, and made from clouds, a vastly different building material then anything seen in Equestria, besides RD's house. But we really don't have much to go on to assume distance, other then the Mane 4 get their via Balloon Travel. Though perhaps Cloudsdale isn't even in a set location. Cloudsdale is known to produce weather, but it could be possible that Cloudsdale could also be a trading town of sorts. Because we know clouds are easily moved around by Pegasus and Griffons, wouldn't it be possible for them to move Cloudsdale around, easily transporting essential weather goods across the country? And we also know that the Pegasus are the ponies that also care for mail, so that's another thing that could easily be sent from some town such as Trottingham, sent to Cloudsdale, and go to it's final destination in Canterlot.

Tl;Dr: I can't really give an estimate for Cloudsdale's distance.

And finally AAAAAAPPLELOOSA. We know Appleloosa is a fairly new town, and we know its a great distance away from anything, seeing as the environment is vastly different then anything we have ever seen, and train is pretty much the only way to get there safely. We also know that ponies are not the only thing that lives there, seeing as how the land is shared with the buffalo. But the question here is why are the ponies building this town so far away? Perhaps a manifest destiny of sorts?

Tl;Dr: AAAAAPPLELOOSA is a great distance from civilization.

And we know Equestria has more towns then the ones listed, such as Trottingham, Fillydelphia, etc. So I think we can assume that Equestria is by far the largest country in their world. Which is something I hope we get to see this season, other kingdoms outside of Equestria ruled by Diamond Dogs, Griffins, Zebras, etc.

Tl;Dr: Equestria is big.

Win map is win.

The cities are probably further than I imagine them because in a cartoon you can't just show ponies walking, that'd be boring. I would like to see other lands explored if there are other nations besides Equestria.

Maybe it's because Equestria is in our earth. (just gimme second to explain...)

They say that the Everfree forest has properties different from their world, properties much like our planet. I propose that the Everfree forest is the gateway to earth from Equestria. Basically, Equestria is an enormous world much like our own, but it is attached to our world with the EFF. Let's say that on our planet, there is a forest in some unimportant location, which acts as a portal to Equestria. You walk around it, you get to the other side of the forest. You walk through it, you get to Eqestria. Maybe that's why ponies are afraid of it. The go in and are transported away from their world and into our strange, different one...

Any thoughts?

Why are you dragging your cursor over my signature? Is there a problem here? Do you maybe expect something special? Honestly, that's kind of creepy. Are you trying to get as much information about me as possible? Maybe you're going to copy and paste this into onto your little collage or all things Lyra? (me, not the awesome BG pony...) You seriously have issues dude... I pity you.

Now I havent seen any other thing related to MLP than MLP:FIM, but I've seen a picture from some of the old series where a girl and her older brother is together with the ponies. So maybe there is some portal connecting Equestria with our world?

I think Equestria is not a planet, but a country. I think it's about the size of the U.S, but the Planet itself is about twice the size of the earth.Third, Canterlot-Ponyville-Appleoosa:Maine-Virginia, Almost 800 miles(950 KM?)

I'm sure everything is larger and farther and only cut down for episode purposes. Canterlot and Ponyville have to be pretty far away.

I have my doubts. It would seem strange for there to be so many mythical creatures like manticores, cockatrices, and sea serpents in the Everfree if it is part of our world. I think it is more likely that Everfree is a remnant from our world, one last place that hasn't been tamed (or grew out of control).

Does it matter? If they can change their mane demographic from three to six year-old girls to the most manly of men; I'm sure they can do something as simple as break a few laws of physics (and in Pinkie's case, walls.)

But what do I know? I'm just a stupid kid.

Well, we've seen canterlot and Ponyville in the same picture, so Canterlot can't be that far away from Ponyville. But the other places must be much longer away. Manehattan is probably closer to Ponyville than Appleloosa since AJ can hike to Manehattan as a filly, and they take a day trip atleast with the train to Appleloosa.

I like to imagine that Equestria is a continent, on a much larger planet, (Although not one too huge, so not as big as Earth, but maybe the size of planet Namek for all you DragonBall Z fans out there...) Equestria is one country ruled by Celestia and there are a few other continents undiscovered by these ponies yet. Maybe it's not like this at all, and that it's Equestria surrounded by a vast ocean, with nothing more... although I'd like to hope there is more then just this one kingdom...

I'd like to see more Kings and Queens, (Maybe something like Warcraft: Orcs vs. Humans, where another species is living off the land, threatening the ponies, and something must be done.) Other forms of sovereignty that have different views on how the Sun and Moon were raised, and other stuff, I won't ramble on...

This is just the imagination of one Silly lil' filly though :3

It stands to reason that Equestria is a small planet. The wing to pony ratio tends to show that. A Pegasus pony would need a much bigger wingspan to get off the ground at one Earth G.

  • 4 weeks later...

According to this, the world in which the ponies live seems to have the same general shape as the Earth. :3

Well, it's a sphere, that's certainly true, but the continents are distinctly different from Earth's.
