Celestia was really stupid throughout the entire episode. From my blog on the episode...

Princess Celestia calls Twilight and is forced to admit to her that she trusted Discord too much. Ya think? You sent the freaking Spirit of Chaos and Mischief (who once ruled all of Equestria) to capture another evil pony-goat-centaur thing who also wants to rule all of Equestria, and YOU DIDN’T HAVE A BACKUP PLAN?! You didn’t even consider that he might turn on you and team up with the bad guy? I mean, I can understand Fluttershy being blindsided by Discord’s betrayal, but you’re the leader of the entire country. You need to be a bit more savvy than that, Princess. And that’s my theme… Celestia is fugging stupid!

At any rate, Tirek is on his way to steal the Princesses’ alicorn magic, and with it, he will be unstoppable. So the only option is for them to give up their magic before he can get to it. But it can’t vanish into nowhere… Twilight is going to have to contain it! “But wait,” you might say… “Silly SolarFox, you just said that Celestia didn’t have a backup plan. Doesn’t this qualify?” No, it doesn’t. First of all, it seems to be a response to the events. If they had given Twilight their magic before sending Discord out, as insurance, then it could qualify as a backup plan. Secondly (and this is another check mark under the Stupid Celestia column) one of the original reasons for sending Discord to stop Tirek is his ability to sense magical imbalances. So the “give all alicorn magic to Twilight” plan is fatally flawed, since Discord is obviously going to be able (and indeed, he does) to sense that the magic is all in Twilight. Sure, he kept it from Tirek, but Celestia couldn’t have predicted that he would, especially since, y’know, he’d just betrayed them all. That being the case, this measure smacks of a desperation play, rather than a calculated backup plan. Luckily, we can have a slight break from Celestial Stupidity as the first half of the finale closes out.

When the second half begins, the Princesses invest all their magic into Twilight, leaving them drained and weak, and Twilight sparkling. She is told to go into hiding, and not to tell her friends, because otherwise they’ll be in danger. Aren’t they already in danger? Tirek is looking to drain every pony in Equestria, so they can hardly get into more danger than that. A better idea would to tell them exactly what’s up and have them ALL go into hiding together, so he and Discord can’t use them as hostages against Twilight.

Really annoying, and my pick for biggest flaw.

Happy minion of The Fabulous One!

I wondered why Tirek (aside for story purposes) decided to keep the amulet/necklace his brother Scorpan gave him hanging around his neck, considering he claimed it (when he gave it to Discord) "was as worthless as he is". Tirek doesn't seem like the type to be sentimental in the slightest over such trinkets or brotherly ties, especially because he felt betrayed by him.

A theory on that can be not that he kept it for sentimental reasons, but as a reminder of not to trust anyone. Every time he looked at the amulet he would be reminded of his brothers "betrayal" and thus keep his resolve that everyone else besides himself is an enemy.

For me, it has to be the big, dumb DBZ-style fight-scene between Twilight and Tirek, because it almost reminds me of one of the worst, most overhyped, and most milked-to-death anime to have ever been crapped out of Akira Toriyama's imagination.

It tossed aside everything that made the MLP show good in the first place, to be as stupid, over-the-top, and violent as possible.  Plus, Twilight's friends were irrelevant and could have just as easily been stuffed in the refrigerator, not only by having their magic stolen by Tirek, but also by being outright murdered, especially in front of Twilight.  And that's what the majority of DBZ was like as well; it's simply Toriyama running out of ideas on what to do with Dragon Ball, and so he resorts to all sorts of cheap tactics to advance the story, like violently killing off characters over and over again and dragging the fights for a godly amount of chapters/episodes.

Actually I'm surprised nobody said that before. Because the fight is completely different from the standard episodes of the show.

The show is habitually light-hearted, clever and cute, yet almost everybody liked the fight scene, which is violent and over-the-top as you said.

Though I don't agree with you, I understand your opinion. ;)

I honestly only have a few nitpicks, and that's the fact that Celestia left the window. But y'know, very minor problem. Other than that, that episode was perfection.

Wait. MURDERING HER FRIENDS? You do realize that Twilight gave up her power for her friends and the whole reason they won was because they got Rainbow Power, righttttt? This is a show for kids!

And why do you constantly compare Twilight/Tirek, which has nothing to do with DBZ besides being a fight scene, to DBZ? And I don't exactly see any cheap tactics to advance the story. Or any killing.

I think that a problem with these episodes is that I still don't know what Twilight is supposed to be doing as a Princess, which is what she has complained about in the beginning.

I'm guessing that she and her friends are going to sit in those thrones and talk about “stuff”. Maybe ponies are going to take their problems to her and they'll stand in the middle of the room and talk to them... Kinda weird. Or maybe the Mane Six are going to stay there staring at each other until some monster appears... And when it does appear, they're going to decide something regardless of what the other princesses think.

Twilight still feels like she is an "extra princess". The episode was nice and all, but kinda pointless.

Although he was reformed, Discord was shunned by most of his friends. Fluttershy was the only one who consistently treated him with kindness. As a result, he never experienced the true magic of friendship, and believed that there existed an even more powerful force.

The episode ends with him realizing that nothing can stop the power of true friendship, so he probably won't betray Equestria again.

^Agreed. Fluttershy was the only one who really wanted to give Discord a chance and honestly accepted him as a friend. The others never showed him genuine kindness or trust and seemed to tolerate him solely for Fluttershy's sake. Not the best way to show someone what friendship means. I think that's why one of my (very few) nitpicks with the finale is how quickly they all forgave him for his betrayal. Of course I can see Fluttershy forgiving him and even Twilight, being that I think she's smart enough to see he "learned his lesson" and all that. But Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Applejack? Not to mention the rest of Equestria? Somehow I don't think they'd brush it off so easily. I felt that was sort of rushed. Relationships take time to mend especially when they were already strained; trust is often hard earned and even harder to regain. But I guess they had to end everything on a happy note. I hope they explore it more in season five but I doubt it.

Aside from that my only other complaint was how fast Tirek was defeated with the rainbow powers...I think the whole thing should have had an extra half hour (at least) but given the time they had to work with I think they did a fantastic job. Plus, super saiyan friendship rainbow explosions and all that. I really don't have too many issues with the finale, it's by far one of the best (if not the best) episodes I've ever seen. Twilight's new castle...meh, I don't love it or hate it. I was always fond of her old treehouse but I think something so meaningful being destroyed is part of what made this episode so intense. I am very hopeful that they'll rebuild it one way or another; whether or not Twilight stays there or in her castle. I mean. Ponyville just can't go without a library, surely princess of books wouldn't allow it!

I thought this episode was near flawless. However, I did find the expository dialogue a little distracting, particularly right before Discord showed up and during their library/research sequence. However, it was integrated well (the dialogue runs right into Discord showing up and in the library Pinkie interrupts Dash, which was funny and kept the dialogue from being redundant) and was necessary if you missed any episodes or forgot anything (remember that little kids need to understand the plot too). So overall it's a very minor nitpick that doesn't take away anything from my love of the episode

The window.  Just... THE WINDOW!!!!

They knew Discord was working with him, so obviously he was going to know about a 4th princess, I don't see why they would assume she'd be kept a secret.

The rainbow designs were pretty cringeworthy, I think it was mostly that the hair was too big, idk.

I didn't think that Discord could be so easily tricked.

Twilight letting Discord out of the bubble.  At a time when she was about to lose everything, why would she risk letting someone go that had just betrayed her AND her friends?

And the fight scene.  Twilight had been smashed through a giant boulder.  How did that not kill her?  And when they exploded what seemed like all of ponyville, the houses were destroyed.  She made her friends tell everyone to stay inside.  So how did all of the ponies not die?

The window is not that much of a big deal. Discord would just tell Tirek anyway.

I know.  that's why i wrote about that in the next sentence XD

But still, it's a huge window and how did they not think about it or even see it and think "oh, well maybe we should take that down"

You did? Yep... You did.

Sorry, It's been a bad day. XD

Well, Discord did change the other windows anyway. Go figure.

This episode has been a little weird with Discord for me. First it seems like he might have a plan. And then he just betrays the ponies and that's that.

Does anyone think that Twilight should have figured out about the keys by herself?

Okay, so I loved almost everything.  I thought the episodes were flipping awesome.  The only ONE complaint I have:

SO, I loved the battle.  I don't care that some think it doesn't fit the style of the show.  However, Twilight had ALL the power from the herself and the other alicorns, and even though Tirek had sucked up all the other ponies powers, I still think that when she blasted Tirek downward, and then blasted him whilst he was down - THAT shoulda been a kill move (per se) - ergo, that should have defeated him.  Now, I understand the episode would have ended differently if that had happened, but still, that blast while he was down was just so boss it shoulda defeated him then.  I think, had that happened, I would have liked it more.

As is, I give the season 4 finale a 9.5 out of 10.  I loved it.  To compare, I give the season 3 finale a 9.4 out of 10.

P.S. Can anyone else just hear "POOONYYY - HAAAMEEE - HAAAAAAAAAAA!" with that kill move?  You just know they had so much DBZ reference in there anyway lmao.
