How did you choose your OC's color scheme?

Wind Chaser

Recommended Posts

Here's a question that dawned on me with the fad of recent OC questions here: how did you choose your color scheme?

I have a relatively simple backstory for Wind Chaser's, it was directly lifted from the logo of Piedmont Airlines, which forms the basis of the "pegasusexpress2010" identity I have on other sites. The jacket and boots resemble what I wore back in about 2012-2013, I tend to favor that light navy blue:

For Vested Interest, I picked a light gray because it looked dignified and businesslike, while the red hair signifies her passion and the green eyes signify her quest for wealth. The vest and tie colors here are inconsequential, they were picked randomly as I was lacking inspiration:

His color scheme... I had a conception at first about what I wanted Overdrive to look like, including colors. He's old school, a throwback, if you will, as reflected by his mane design. The red fur, with the brown and gold mane and tail, just kinda fit.

I wanted her coat to be color not commonly seen in the show, so I chose green. I tried a few different colors for the mane and tail, trying to see what went well. I chose pink eyes because no other character, except Mrs. Cake, has pink eyes.

Hmm, let's see...

For Galatea, I wanted something other than the pastel colors that seem to be the norm. I first tried brown, but I thought it didn't quite fit, so I pushed it towards a dark red and liked the result. Black hair fit well with that color, so that was what I chose for mane and tail. Then I needed a brighter color for the eyes to offset the darker palette; the gold color I ended up with I felt tied it all together well. c:

Ariel, I knew right away I wanted softer colors for her to match her generally gentle nature, so I went with a light mint green... Then I started thinking about food, and I went with a magenta, raspberry color mane and tail :P Purple was another sort of subtle color, a calm color, so that went for the eyes (well, also to offset her ice blue eye which is explained in her backstory).

And Nano? Well... He's a freaking robot. I had to go with silver, metallic colors for the most part. I chose blue for the eyes because it's a soothing, gentle color that suits his personality well more than anything else. Then, the red bandana just adds a splash of warmth to his overall cool color scheme. ^^

I knew from the get-go that Gallantry would have something to do with armor, so I decided to make his coat the same steel grey color as most typical suits of armor. I made his hair red because red and grey always seem to go hand-in-hand together.

For Chocolate Neapolitan though, I had the name to begin with so obviously I based his colors off the ice-cream of the same name, thus his coat is chocolate brown and his mane and tail are a mix of light and dark "strawberry" pinks. Only exception here is I made his eyes an almost piecing yellow because I originally had a much, much different back-story for him and the color of his eyes would have been a kind of "plot point", for lack of better term.

Hmm... How did I choose Samurai Equine's color scheme? Hmm... Well, let me look at him without his armor and refresh my memory...

Ah, yes. I remember now.  ^_^  It was so hard designing my character...

I always knew I wanted a red pony, but I've seen like TONS of other red fan character ponies before, so i didn't want to just be a similar one people have seen over and over. So, after seeing the horses in the show Gingaman, I got inspired to throw in some brown in a shaggy, layered kind of way. The hooves and the muzzle are there because I wanted a defined muzzle and hooves, but they are white because I wanted to throw some white in there and that just seemed like the logical choice. If I threw too much white in there, well, he'd look a little saint-like, and I didn't want that.

As for the mane and tail, well... I got the orange based on a different pony FC that a friend on DeviantArt gave me. I liked the orange, but I wanted to make it two-toned. Since I all ready had some brown on the body, I thought I'd add a darker brown for his hair à la Doctor Whooves. And I liked what I saw. Gave him kind of a rustic/artifact feel to him. As for his hair and mane style, I hard the hardest time picking that out. Finally found something I liked based off a 1 time background character. Absolutely NO ONE has successfully guessed who to this day. But here's a hint: Sweet and Elite.   :pout:

But that's just for his natural colors. How I designed his armor and the colors for that is another story. :please:

For my OC Star Ruby, I liked the way Rarity's coat looked. So I made my OC have a white coat too. I wanted my OC to have a tough girl kind of a hair style so I made it jagged like Rainbow Dash's. And the cutie mark was based off what I love to do (because she's kind of me as a pony) which was video games. Then everything else was kind of just me getting creative.

His scheme was pretty much inspired from the color scheme of my old dragon character; Captain Draconius Tarsai Draken. :D

my OC is suppose to be the great great great decedent of Snowdrop (she is 900 years older then my OC) so I gave him the same Coat, and Mane Color as for his eyes I tried to imagine what Snowdrop's eyes would look like if she wasn't blind I would think a blueish color so yeah I created Snowflake Frostflame

he had a lot of original colors designs like being Dark Blue or Aqua and having a Short Mane, different color mane I had made him several times before i became satisfied

For Comet Streak, he started out as a mild blue since that was my favorite color. He also had black hair with a yellow "streak" in his mane (to resemble a flame). Eventually, I made his coat color periwinkle and made his mane color a dark blue to be a little more consistent with colors.

For my first OC. I wanted to pick something that people couldn't make fun of so to speak. I like the cool color combinations but I didn't want people saying "Oh look, another generic OC"

Cloud Shroud was my first.  334adfe8df.jpg

Then Prima I made a few days ago. Again I wanted to keep a basic show like looking color scheme.

Well, I took into consideration what the cannon changeling colours are, sort of a black, and blue... So I changed it up a bit, added a mane with black and green colours, a green tinted shell, and green tinted wings. Then shade was borne!

For DOPPELRAC, I just used the colours SOLRAC used... Orange coat and a black mane. BECAUSE DOPPELGÄNGER!
