Apply to be a moderator!

Being a moderator is very difficult. It takes a lot of time, emotion, sweat, blood, and tears.

You make it sound like people are applying for a military position or something. Surely being a mod can't involve bleeding?

I suppose it would all depend on how depressed you become from the burden of constantly having to deal with the behind the scenes cesspool when you get stuck on cleanup duty as the new guy on the team.  :comeatus:

(btw, since I've never replied to you before I think  ... love the Sylvanas pony avatar. Sylvanas is best Warcraft character.  :squee: )

No, but it does have a tendency to be emotionally draining when the needs of the community take precedence over relationships that you have formed in the board. When each decision you make becomes scrutinized by members of the forum, it can take its toll. I've seen great users become moderators, and then wind up tired and disinterested in the very thing that brought them to a fan message board to begin with. That can be a high price to pay if you are not ready for the role.

SCS really put it better than I have seen Admins on other boards do. You really need your passion to carry you from time to time. All that said, the Mod role is extremely crucial and can be just as rewarding as it is taxing.

Feld0 should consider piping in an .mp3 of The Smile Song in the Mod Break Room. :D

However, I don't recommend doing that unless you're sure you would have plenty of time for both without stressing yourself out or reducing your free time too much. It is far better to do one thing very well than to strain to do several things at a subpar level.

Erm, yeah, count me out. This doesn't seem to be the type of forum/community where any hot-headed idiot with the right connections can become staff and I applaud that. Really, I've seen some real immature and spineless people become mods/admins elsewhere.  >_>

Personally, I've always wanted to try moderating a community to at least gain some experience and I think I could learn a lot from it. Well, I've used another forum community as a laboratory before and with malicious intent to boot but I respect MLP Forums too much to want to do anything like that here even if it's with good intentions with positive promises towards the community here. If anything, I'd ask for an apprenticeship just to get a better understanding of the job.

To be a moderator means you have to make some very uncomfortable decisions at times.

I mean some things will be fairly obvious. In my experience, you'll have people who will come in and be general pains in the ass. They'll post virus-infected links, post gratuitous pictures, or just generally pick fights.

Other things though...you have to walk a fine line, and you have to take criticism. I've been criticized in the past, but at the same time I've also been complimented. Sometimes, just seeing supportive comments from members can be very rewarding.

You have to love it, but you also have to prepare for days where you want to quit. There is no guarantee that you'll like it.

Definitly. I've been on staff for about 16 months at this point and have gone through times that one would classify as "tough".
Its the love I have for serving this community and the people on staff, who are practically a second family to me, that keeps me going and doing my best. Passion is important, hell Id say its crucial.

My role can be tough. I have to face the very real possibility that I'll need to warn or ban a friend of mine if they make a mistake. I need to deal with situations that can be disturbing and weigh on my mind even after its sorted out, but at the end of the day knowing I made a difference is a great feeling that outweighs the negative.

Moderator isn't a glory role, nor is it an easy task, but it is crucial in keeping the site functional. Almost as much so as a technical administrator.

Be sure you understand what you are getting into before you consider applying. I can't stress this enough.
Don't be afraid to stay a member for now and apply in the future.

I would love to save Feld0 from ninjas, but unfortunately I AM one of the ninjas!

*calls Celestia's royal guards* I FOUND ONE OF THE NINJAS! GET HER!

No of course XD But its not everyday you get sent hate mail and see horrible things and have to turn to the police. Moderation can affect you emotionally at times so you have to be prepared.

xxconfusedunicornxx,

I am only going to nod to one of your points. It's a pretty serious one, and I'm sure that it will be touched on during the interview and vetting process.

...

On a happier note!

I've seen some great users show interest. Some I consider well rounded members on this board and have been delighted to interact with. Good luck to you all! :D

I completely agree, I been to several sites where the veteran mods are cold and distant.

It is far more than that. That task is actually one of the most basic and easy tasks we attend to.

I strongly recommend that no one gets themselves into it unless they have a good reason for doing so. I've stayed in moderation (and ended up becoming an admin) because I love this community dearly. I would have quit the staff a long time ago if I didn't. Don't get me wrong, the people in the staff are wonderful. I love working with them. But the work itself can be astoundingly draining and painful

Oh Man. Sounds lovely to hear this again. Oh man I'm so down to be one again. Just finished my summer classes and I'm ready for the rough, tiring, and time consuming position again.

Imagine if you will being on your death bed – And standing around your bed – the ghosts of the ideas, the dreams, the abilities, the talents given to you by life.

And that you for whatever reason, you never acted on those ideas, you never pursued that dream, you never used those talents, we never saw your leadership, you never used your voice, you never wrote that book.

And there they are standing around your bed looking at you with large angry eyes saying "We came to you, and only you could have given us life! But now. We must die with you FOREVER!

The question is – if you die today, what ideas, what dreams, what abilities, what talents, what gifts, would die with you?

So I wonder how Feld0 is doing against those ninjas?

Last time I checked they were having a tea party. Edited by Blobulle

I'm pretty sure I ruined my chance to be accepted from a slip up O_O

No one is expected to have a flawless moderation record in regard to staff hirings. An excessive moderation history can disqualify you, but just having to receive some minor warnings and/or PMs isn't a big deal. :)

I think the admins will PM you.

Yep. All applicants will receive a PM at some point informing them whether or not their application was accepted.
