I would say that I became a brony in July of this year. It helped me stay calm about starting freshman year at college. My sister sat me down to watch a marathon of it on the Hub. I enjoyed it and started watching episodes on YouTube. Before I knew it, I was hooked, and became a brony. 2 months later, I already have a brony shirt and a Fluttershy shirt, with an Octavia one on the way. I can thank My Little Pony for helping me during the transition to college life and living away from home.

I joined today.

A couple of weeks ago I accidentally clicked a youtube video which had ponies in it D:

I watched for a while and got the idea that I'd just watch some episodes of MLP to see why so many people were "bronies"

And here I am, after watching a couple (not many) episodes.

Still a lot to explore!

I became a brony about a month ago, on MGSForums, when my friend rain had Applejack in her avatar. She recommended the show to me and I've loved it ever since. Thank you rain!

I was a hater of the show (saw it as girly and didn't think guys should watch it) until a friend of mine decided to bribe me with Ramen noodles to try the first episode. I went along with it (it was for Ramen! I had to!) and by the end of the night, I had watched the first seven episodes. I'm still waiting for the Ramen 12 months later. http://mlpforums.com/public/style_emoticons/default/dry.png regardless of the bribery, I've loved the show ever since and regret nothing!

1.5 years ago: Le me, hater.

1 year ago-4 months ago: Le "whatever, just don't involve me"

4 months ago: Really clingy girl get really emotional and dramatic when I don't stay up till 1 AM chatting with her on Facebook. So I watched MLP. For 2 weeks.

At first I was like "K, this is good i guess."

Then "Why does this make me feel sooooo good?"

Then "K, I'm a brony."

And not a single mad was given that day.

I don't know it depends what you mean by that.

If you mean when I joined the forums here then I've actually only been here a month or so maybe. But I started watching several months ago during the begginging of the school year.

I didn't interact with the community at all before I joined this forums just so you know. Other then watching the episodes and a few other videos on youtube MLP related.

Some time early 2011, around January or February. I started seeing a lot of MLP memes online and eventually decided to watch the show. Season 1 had all the episodes to that point on youtube and I watched them all, one after another, in one sitting.

When I heard many teenagers and young adults were watching a reboot of My Little Pony that was rebooted by an experienced animator that put forth a decent effort into it I was intrigued. After seeing some screenshots I checked out a random episode in the middle and continued watching from there. That was around April of last year.

I do not remember the exact date but I probably became a bony a week or two before joining this forum (March Sixth)

This is my story:

My first week actually didn't even have a whole lot of MLP in it. At least not right away. I was not actually into the show yet on my very first week. Back then, I think I was more into Sparta Remixes and the like and I would sometimes run into MLP Sparta Remixes, I remember that a lot of the MLP ones seemed better than the rest and I started watching more. Watching all those Sparta Remixes got me interested in other things (Basically PMVs before I knew what PMV meant). After a while I started wondering where all these Sparta Remixes were coming from and decided to look into it some more. Even then, I do not think I was into MLP yet, I was still in that state of 'how the hell can a little girl's show have such a talented fanbase?' I think I stuck with just PMVs for awhile before actually watching the show though and all that took about three days because it was still summer. Once I started actually watching it still was not very often but it probably did not take long after that to become a Brony.

I believe it was July-August-ish.... I know that it wasn't to horribly long since the first season finale, and that it was on a saturday because I watched it on the Hub. A couple of people discussing Fluttershy on one of the old forums I went to recommended it to me, and I was very intrigued. My first episode was "The Ticket Master". :)

  • 2 weeks later...

If I remember correctly it was August 26 2012 at about 9:30 pm. I was curious as to why this show was SO popular. I was aware about bronies but i didn't think much about them. While i was watching I was like "What the heck is this!?!" When I was finished watching the first 2 episodes on youtube I didn't know if I was a brony or not, but i had a strange interest in the show. A few days later i watched the third and thus I was sure, I had became a brony!

Okay, I'm not sure if anyone here really even cares to hear it, but for those that do, my story isn't the usual "I watched it out of curiosity" story, I did actually go through a sort of adventure. So hear me out because I have quite a story here for you, if you care to, that is...

So I don't remember when exactly I saw the show first, although I'm pretty sure it was in a comedy video that contained the show's theme song used for the humor of the video. I remember the creator of the video said that multiple people had asked him if he was a "brony". At the time, I had no idea anything about the show or it's fanbase, so I was completely lost. Surprisingly, I didn't go look it up, which I question to this day.

Next I think was in a fan video, which, due to massive amounts of offensive content, I didn't like, so I closed it. I started off by hating the show before I even knew what it was. Crazy.

I think the first time I actually learned about the show was when a YouTube commenter (more commonly known for video game videos and countdowns) reviewed the first two episodes of the first season of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I watched the video, not sure what to expect, but overall it wasn't as bad as I'd expected.

Then I learned that some members of our school's fencing club were bronies (although I wasn't familiar with the term at the time). I was shocked by their love for the show, which drove me to curiousity about it, so I began secretly watching small clips of the show, involving short spoken phrases from the characters. I still wasn't a brony, but I was beginning to like the show.

As I watched the clips, there was a constant reference to a story called "Cupcakes". I was once again curious, and decided to read the story, ignoring the blatantly obvious warning. In all honesty, I had trouble sleeping for about two weeks after reading the story. I continued watching clips later on, but, as with the story, which I really didn't know what to think of it, I kept it all a secret, even from the bronies at our fencing club.

A long time later, the YouTube commenter reviewed the second season's first and second episodes. I was, again, surprised by the positive way he talked about the show despite denying being a brony. I still didn't want to watch the show, though, because, in my mind at least, if I watched the show, I'd be a brony, and there'd be no going back. In all honesty, I was afraid.

I continued watching clips until I came across one more commonly referenced story. I was home alone for the day, so I saw nothing wrong with reading it. The story was "My Little Dashie". It took me a good two hours to read it, and by the end of it I was left feeling depressed. I didn't cry; I held myself back, although I did get close. After that I reasoned that if someone (or somepony, as the case may be) could make a story like that based on the show, then there had to be something I was missing. So, I pulled up the first season's first episode on my iPhone. Because I was using the mobile version, I had to press the play button to watch the video, it didn't just play on it's own. Due to that, I stopped for a moment and had a sort of mental battle with myself debating on whether or not I should really go through with this. I fully understood the consequences, but somehow used all my willpower to press the play button...

Well, of course I loved it. I had the suspicion that I would from the beginning, but that was precisely the problem. I was still very self conscious about it, and so I kept it in secret for the longest time...Until one day in fencing I finally couldn't take it anymore, I told all the bronies there about the experience described above. They were actually able to relate to it very well, which helped me feel more accepted.

Later in the year, during summer break, I noticed BroNYcon being reported in our daily newspaper. Unfortunately, my parents were disgusted with the idea and wouldn't even read on to see where bronies wrote about being good people, my sister thought it was "random", and my friend thought the very concept of the fandom was "gay".

Fast-forward to late August, I was finally coming out of the brony closet and told people about the fandom. I started small, with people I was new to meeting, and even told my sister about it (she admitted to having watched "20 seconds" of it before shutting it off. So close...), who overall seemed fine about it.

As September rolled in, I was telling many people about the show, and had even made a few quotes for a possible FiMfic. So far the reactions to the show had been positive...until today, that is. Today, my best friends, my best friends, insulted me for liking the show, and are now determined to hate it and make fun of me for it. Hopefully things will improve later. (For the full story: http://mlpforums.com/topic/34714-a-bit-worried-today/)

And that's how I met your mother...er, how I became a brony.

Sorry if the story was a bit long, I just really wanted to share it.

I think these are how the majority of "bronies coming out of the stallion" stories work. They hate the show when they first see some random MLP thing on Youtube, but when they view the actual show, they start to instantly like it. Simply put. DON'T WATCH THE FAN STUFF FIRST lol.

And don't worry about your parents or friends being "disgusted" with you. You are your own person, watch whatever show you want and embrace the culture! Without that embracement, these forums would be boring lol! Give it time for the Brony in you to sink in and eventually people will just come to know you as one. Kind of how one becomes a "nerd". Yeah, they make fun of you for a while, but then they come to realize that they can't really change you. :)

and I read the whole thing, and I don't even like to read lol...I don't know but your story seems similar to everypony else :) everything you did, you did it out of curiosity, so no shocker here!

and if your friends insult you to the point of hurting your feelings, then re-evaluate them, and ask yourself if they are good friends, they don't seem good to me, so stick with your other brony friends I would say, it's not a big deal, it's just a cartoon :)

Quite the story, I read the whole thing.

I think the first time I truly watched anything MLP related was actually me just being curious about someone I knew from another game who I talked to on skype. He had a fluttershy pic on his profile pic. I looked up some video clips of her and such and eventually watched the show.

So i guess technically I watched the show because of that.

Thanks for the story even more actually, it kinda helped me remember more about my first time watching the show ;p.

I liked the twist at the end of the story. I had no idea you were the same guy who posted about his best friends hating on him earlier today in the forums! That was a pretty cool coincidence that I happened to stumble across this post too.

But anyway, I can totally relate to the part about your family and sister. My parents resented me for liking it, and my sister claimed that she "gave it a chance" after watching about 30 seconds of the pet song from that one episode where Fluttershy helps Rainbow Dash find the ideal pet. "I don't like musicals!" she said. I facepalmed so hard.

Thankfully, my friends at my old school were bronies before me, or were eventually converted into bronies by my other friends, so I didn't have issues with my best friends rejecting me for it. We were already a pretty nerdy crowd, so liking MLP came naturally to us, I guess. My ex-girlfriend though...that''s another story. While I was dating her, she would make fun of me all the time for liking the show. One day I just snapped at her. "If you would actually watch the show, then maybe you wouldn't be so quick to laugh in my face about it!! After all, you're the one who's always preaching about being more open-minded. Maybe you should try it yourself some time!"

She was silent for a moment, then she said, "F*** you, Derek."

"C'mon! I didn't mean it like that. Really!" I yelled after her

"Too late, Derek! Maybe you'll learn to treat a girl better when you grow up...IF you grow up." She threw a nasty glance my way and continued walking.

So she gave me the silent treatment for two weeks, then I finally broke up with her. I think she was expecting an apology, but I was so upset at how much crap she gave me about the show, that I just ended our relationship then and there.
