Have you used the Pony Creator? What do you think of it?

Since I myself can't draw and I hate asking people who might be doing something else already to draw for me, I've used it for my five OCs and my younger brother's ("J's") OC.

(You read it right... I have five OCs.

I was actually drawing ponies before some one suggested the pony creator to me. I decided to try it, but they didn't have Cloudchasers mane style, which was a big let down. After that I never touched it again.

So I continued to practice and develop my art so that I can make an OC(s) on my own.

Then Violet Spiral (Pegasus) was born...

then Multigear (Artificial Synth Pony) ...

then Mayhem (Chimera / Draconequus)

then Vivienne (Unicorn),

and finally, my first filly Harmonica (Earth Pony)...

Now all that I need is a Alicorn of my own. ;3

I have a male alicorn (Nightfall http://mlpforums.com/page/roleplay-characters/_/nightfall-r104), a female alicorn (Solara http://mlpforums.com/page/roleplay-characters/_/solara-r423), a male unicorn (Fire Blade http://mlpforums.com/page/roleplay-characters/_/fire-blade-r1077), a female pegasus (Greylight http://mlpforums.com/page/roleplay-characters/_/greylight-r824), and a female earth pony (Shelby http://mlpforums.com/page/roleplay-characters/_/shelby-r1307)...

Aweh, Thanks! However, three of them require coloring in, and I've yet to even contemplate a color scheme for Mayhem. :(

She's gonna be the hardest to paint...Then Vivienne...then Harmonica. They'll never truly be alive until they have color! >.< I might just use the Pony creator to give me an idea of a color scheme suitable for both Vivienne and Harmonica, but Mayhem is gonna bite my head off...especially if I try to paint all of her shape shifting forms...

Yeah i've used it. I created my OC with it. But i felt i didn't have many hair styles i liked. The closest one i found that i liked was Rainbow dashs... and that looked kinda odd. I tried i different one. It looked good. But it wasn't how i imagined it.

I eventually drew my own OC though but i used the creator as a refernce thing. But its pretty neat if u don't have much artistic skill. I just wish the creator would work on it more. Since season 2 finished there should be more hairs styles for ponys but i found that most hair styles are from Avatar...

Eh... i guess i'm just being picky. shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth right?

  • 1 year later...

Is it awesome?

Is it stupid?

Is it ugly?

Its good for people that don't have an artistic side and you just like making OC's there. I used to toggle around with it, but now I just don't like it much. I would like it better if it didn't seem so ugly looking, but that's just me. :P

Out of a scale through 1/10, what do you give it? :)

I somewhat give it a 4.5/10

Boring, lack of creativity, and two-dimensional. I would trash it if it was me, because you should make your own OC. It isn't supposed to be bound to such a small array of mane and tail styles, eyes, anything. Make one yourself from scratch.

Don't be a lazy bum.

It has its uses, but I wouldn't use it for a final form of an OC, just maybe to get a basic look to start with

I would probably give it a 3/10, I mean it is good for maybe getting a first, basic reference for your oc but other than that, no other real use

As someone with zero artistic talent/ability, and no time to really improve on those nonexistent skills, I was glad to have stumbled across the Pony OC generator. Is it overused? Sure! Has it been used to create some really over the top, over accessorized neon colored eyesore OCs? Absolutely! However, I will defend it. It has its uses, and it helped me envision what my OC would look like. It is a tool, but shouldn't be your ace in the hole for getting an image of your OC.

Well truth be told I only used it once.. never did after that because well I don't want a OC... I have Celestia.. anyway it was ok but I for only like it when the pony makes the OC them self! because its a work of love!

2/10...

I'm quite fond of Pony Creator, mainly because it gives me a good, general idea of what my OC will look like.

However, I feel that all of the "special" choices, such as coat pattern, original (poorly designed) wings and accessories, incredibly unrealistic mane and tail styles, and the poor choice of poses make it one of the most abused widgets of all time. I can't COUNT the number of times I've seen a black and red spotted, seven foot, bat-winged, alicorn OC named Shadow Night or something like that.

TL;DR: Extra "original" addons make Pony Creator one of the most abused widgets of all time.

I forgot to mention that if you want a nonpony creator oc, yet you have no artistic talent, there are plenty of people who would be willing to make one for you, you just have to know where to look, some are even willing to do it for free

I will give 4/10 for it

Because, yes it has all the good tools to make a pony but it is somewhat confusing and difficult to make a somewhat finished product.

I'd prefer the "fabulous" pony maker in the hub's website. Also I don't want an OC right now so this explains much.

It's really not that bad. It's only really bad when somebody makes it their avatar. But, It does not bother me at all other than that.

I believe someone said this above, and I'm just going to echo them. It's good for planning your OC. As in what type of colour scheme you want, what accessories you might want or what mane style you want.

But using it as your official art of your OC is just boring.

It's the obvious start for early OC concept making, and that is the only purpose for it that I support. Obviously, artists can draw better (usually) with some kind of visual reference, so, building your OC through the pony maker makes it far, far easier for you to get your first actual art piece of your character. This is, to the key, what I did with my own pone. Made a generator image in order to aide the artist in getting an initial artwork.

I find that people who don't use a pony gen image first, are (obviously) tons more likely to end up cycling through several artists before they trial and error their way to an art representing their character perfectly, in their mind. When the artist has nothing but text to go off of, it isn't the same thing as an image, even if you type them a mini-essay. Sure, lots of artists can hit the nail on the head the first try with just a detailed description, but I find that skipping the middle man by making a visual reference based off what you yourself obviously know what you want the character to look like, then seeking real artwork, is the more direct and often faster alternative.

The problem comes when people are either too lazy, don't know how, or are incapable of finding someone who will draw their OC for them, and they end up using the pony generator images themselves in anything from avatars and signatures, to wallpapers and other artwork projects. Just, no. It's ugly, uncreative, and looks really lazy.

I like it quite a bit, probably because I just get frustrated when I try to draw XD. I will draw something for like, ever, but then it just comes out bad, there's now another paper in the trash can, and I draw it again in like five seconds to suffer the same fate. 7/10

The thing is, it's the only tool that other people have for creating OCs without having to pay for an artist to do so. Please don't kill me for it, but I've used Pony Maker for my OC, yet I still understand why other people hate it so much. So yeah, if you can pay an artist to draw your OC like a pro, then perfect, but if you don't, then..

I will admit, I used to use one for a few avatars before I heard how unfavourable it is. Also, I will say that it is very lacking in some places, and has way too many options in others. I can see that many people often get carried away by the features it offers and they sometimes "intensify" their OC's to the point where they just look ridiculous. However, it's their OC, so they can choose what they do with it, despite criticism.

I don't really mind if they're used as avatars, signatures, etc. It's their decision, so it's their decision whether they should drop it, like I chose to do, which was also when I realised how good I was at pixel art and replaced it with a "desktop" OC.

Not everyone is an artistic genius and I think it is very good for people who can't draw their own stuff. Who cares if you think its unoriginal or uncool, you should stop being so judgmental / stuck up and care about the pony, not their avatar. wink.png

I have not made any OC of mine public. I will say that when I first used the pony creator I found it to be extremely limiting. I could never get the cutie mark upload feature to work, the backgrounds are extremely limiting and non-customizable, and why in the world are mane 6 manes and tails part of the options? That to me is pretty dumb. :/

However, it helps with coming up with a solid foundation for a character design. I find that starting from scratch is a pain in the butt, and the pony creator gives visual aid much more easily than a trial and error process, especially for people who have a hard time drawing ponies. Independent-minded people like me don't like to ask for help over unimportant things like drawing an OC. Especially if I have to pay someone to do it. If the OC is just for my personal reference then why would I pay someone to draw my OC? Especially if I am using the OC more for fanfiction purposes. As long as I can give a proper description of the OC, who is going to care if I used the pony creator to help me design him/her?

One other thing... because the pony creator is so limited in a variety of ways, instead of complaining about it, I just print screen my pony and finish designing him/her in an image editing program like Paint.NET or GIMP.

Don't be a lazy bum.

Excuse me, but the ones who use and favor pony creator aren't lazy bums. Most of them use it for one: a layout of their OC or ponysona, two: if they don't have a reference in case of request, the ponycreator may be a good and quick tool at some times, and three: some people just can't draw... Even when some try their bests at making their OCs, you call them "lazy bums"?

The fandom is draining its creative resources that is why we seeing more crossover rather than "actual-self-ideal" works.

Also the path of the fandom is also driving toward more audult and violent. SMILE HD proved that artists running out of ideas!

So that why OCs getting more boring.

Always be yourself!
