spoiler Have Lyra and Bonbon become a couple?

You'd think so! They really made it look like they are but unfortunately word of Jim and Larson says otherwise. So, yeah ship sank. (Have more to say on that below)

No, not really. They can get away with it via Word of Gay in which the creators state they're gay but they don't state it in the show.

Hasbro shows aren't immune to it. During Transformers Prime's run the creators stated the Decepticon, Knock-Out, was gay. Unfortunately they handled in an unintentionally offensive and tasteless fashion!

There was even a webcomic that tackled it.

Now they could have easily confirmed the LyraBonbon ship as Canon, there would have been no consequences if they had done so. Unfortunately for shippers, both Big Jim and Larson sank that ship and confirmed that they're best friends and no more than that.

So really what we got in Equestria Girls Rainbow Rocks and Slice of Life was a really unnecessarily cruel ship tease! I was no supporter of the ship myself but damn! Teasing the fans by REALLY making it look as if the ship is canon to the point where anyone can look at that scene and say "Yeah, they're an obvious couple" only to go and say "HA! Ya fell for it! They're not a couple, they're just best friends! Anyone who says otherwise is wrong!", that was overkill!

I disagree that they could have done it with "No consequences". Hell no. I'm maintaining that, whatever LGBT stuff goes on, the show's writers will ALWAYS deny it. However we've been getting HUGE winks from them.

Or do you do this with all your "best friends"

Ps. For comparison, I'm getting Zero of the same vibe from Octavia and Vinyl or Derpy and the Dr.

I actually think they're still just best friends now but have romantic feelings for each other. Unfortunately it'll never happen in canon but we all know the truth :comeatus:

Nope, the show completely 'gal pal'ed them, even though it was so clear that they were hinting otherwise with their portrayal that even someone like me who is usually completely oblivious to such things could tell.

He openly referred to Steven Magnet as gay, but referred to Lyra and Bon Bon as "besties".

There the same kind of "best friends" that J. Edgar Hoover (The director of the FBI in the US from 1924-1972) and Clyde Tolson were. for you kids that have no idea what I am talking about. google it! "Hoover and Tolson worked together more than 40 years. They traveled on vacation and official business, rode to work together, shared lunch nearly every day at Washington’s Mayflower hotel and sometimes even wore matching suits. Hoover, at his death, left Tolson most of his estate" but by all official accounts they were just "best friends".

just because they say its not true does not mean they did not wright it to look like there more then friends.

I think all this was a way of Hasbro to encourage Lyra/Bon shipping.

I don't know how much of a hand hasbro has in these kinds of thing. I get the vibe that the show staff do these kind of things and hasbro just steps in and tells them to tone it down when it starts getting to be to much. but that is just a guess on my part. I believe that the hole Lyra and Bonbon started when some of the animations started pairing the two tougher in the background with out any input for any of the rest of the staff or hasbro.

i would say yes, because if they are best friends they are taking it to a creepy level, i mean i have a bff and we have never acted that way and were at the point where we can talk to each other about anything

It's just that it FELLS like they're a couple....

In my eyes, it's not like how other characters are close and then romantic/perverted fans take things too far. They're scenes together really feel like there is something under the surface when I watch them.

So Big Jim and Larson themselves sunk the ship. Fine. But that's gonna stop the shippers, nor will it stop my spider sense from tingling when I see certain scenes...

"It's like I found a piece of myself I didn't even know was missing!"

How do you think WE feel?!

I'm sure they're just friends, but in my headcanon, they're a couple.  If any two characters were to ever come out as a gay couple, it would be them.  They definitely feel more like a couple than anyone else.  They're so adorable, too.

It's like I said, at this point it's REALLY cruel ship-teasing. When I saw SoL, even though I'm no supporter of the ship I thought the ship was near confirmed at this point or at least open to interpretation but then M.A. Larson and Big Jim just flat out said "They're best friends. That's it, we have no interest in making them a couple." to which I can't help but think that they're going overboard with their ship teasing. For me it's a little issue but when they say they never will be a couple and continue to ship-tease like that, I can't help but find it in poor taste.

They're lovers. I'm sure that the show made them "best friends" because gay couples is still taboo.

Unfortunately, I have a hard time believing that since Steven Magnet is now confirmed to be canonically gay.

We can say otherwise all we like but if the creators say they're not then it's not canon and probably never will be.

Oh, so he is gay? I'm actually... not fine with that, since he's a very obvious gay stereotype...

It's one thing to show a character by himself, it's another entirely to show an actual relationship. That's where they won't dare go.

In my opinion, their relationship with one another is presented in such a way that both interpretations of them being best friends or actually being in couple relationship work; I think is ridiculous to say episode debunks one or the other.

You can't say they aren't together  ;)

Merged_Lyra_and_Sweetie_Drops_happy_S5E1(Now that's how you do a fucking shipping nod!)

Or, yanno, a CatDog reference.

As per the question, yeah, quite literally, in fact, in this episode.
