am I the only person that just.. watches.. the show?

Personally, I don't consider myself a brony because my only real investment in this is that I watch a cartoon show.

Watching a cartoon show is not an important part of my life.

However, I did create a ponysona and I do draw pony art, because it's a popular thing, I'm an artist anyway, and I'd like to use the relatively simple and variable concepts of the pony world to improve my art.

The ponysona is there mostly to be more comfortable for brony clients in the event I finally get around to taking commissions.

I also am one who watches the show and doesn't buy any merch.. Though i did just order an MLP book online ("The art of Equestria", incase you're curious which book :P) and it should be here any day now.. not sure if that entirely counts and merchandise..

But all the same.. There is no need to feel different or left out because you don't get merchandise.. that's not what's important..

What is important is you enjoy the show just like we all do :smug: and even if you don't happen to like the show.. That doesn't mean you

don't belong amongst those who do.. :grin2:

Besides.. some of us are too embarrassed to be buying merchandise, due to fear of being judged and stuff.. especially if you've only told your friends that you like MLP and not your family and are worried about what they're gonna say..

look man I've essentially came out twice - once being gay and once to liking bears (which is like coming out in the mainstream gay community) and well.. liking ponies just isn't really something I need to advertise to people hehe..

I don't even know if my partner knows.. it's not like anyone really NEEDS to know - I watch the show on my own time.. doesn't affect my life in any other way..

@@Chronamut:

For me MLP:FiM is just one of the shows that I like to watch. I do enjoy it, but that's about it. I don't see MLP as a style of life or something like that. I don't even use the term "brony" to refer to myself, though I don't mind if other people call me that. :)

I wouldn't say that I only watch the show, however I think some fans could act more grown-up, and some of them take their love of the show a bit far.

Part of me considered moving this topic to show discussion, but I think I will leave it here as it has conversational value beyond just the show. I don't think there is any kind of requirement whatsoever as to how to approach this series or anything else one might be a fan of. Heck, my friend is even less connected with the fandom as he has no interest in even joining a forum, on top of not desiring any merch. To answer the OP, I don't think there's anything wrong with just enjoying the series and not wanting any stuff to go with it. Maybe you will develop a desire for merch later on, maybe you won't.

I've mostly been focused on acquiring the media, such as the DVDs, comics and books, largely because if I like a series enough I generally like to own it, but I don't really think of that in terms of having merch per se. Other merch kind of just found my way into my collection as I attended BronyCAN for the second year in a row this summer, possibly due to the atmosphere of the venue. Adding merch of any kind to my collection wasn't a decision I came to right away though.

A couple of years ago I remember talking to a friend of a friend, and mentioned that I watch MLP. He said that he's seen seasons 1 and 2, but doesn't want to consider himself a Brony because he thought "that is one intense fandom." So there are people out there who 'just watch the show' in my experience, but I'm guessing many who just watch the show aren't as active on forums, maybe.

Haven't talked to that guy since, though. You never know, he could be rolling in merch by now.

Either way, it's fine.

seriously I feel like to be a brony you have to have this whole culture around you of buying the toys, ponifying everything, and that you can't just be oh I dunno..

Well, it really depends on what kind of person you are, I mean, me (And a lot of other bronies) are the kind of people who, when they like a show, They want to buy stuff from it. I don't have any pony stuff, (Because I'm not sure if my parents would want it around), But if I see something Doctor Who related, it's a different story.

But some people just don't care, and want to watch the show, and that's cool, too.

I just watch the show too, and I don't have any merch. You're not alone; you don't need to do more than be a fan of the show to be a brony.

Have the courage to think and act on your own. And have the courage to disobey.

Are you sure you just watch the show? You are registered with a MLP fan forum after all.

I'm not a medical expert, psychologist, psychiatrist, teacher or love doctor. Take my words with a pinch of salt, yeah?

I am an experienced cook, musician and care worker though, so that's something.

talking about something isn't that big of a stretch - I talk about lots of things in lots of places - doesn't make me anything other than a guy that likes to talk about stuff hehe..

Not necessarily a good point. I've been members of forums for shows I've never watched. Lol.

...Maybe that's just me.

mainly when I say I just watch the show - I mean anything I do is related to learning about the show - I am, on here to discuss and learn about the show, I read the comics on youtube to learn about the show, and the parodies usually involve the show, and I of course watch the show.

I don't buy plushies, roleplay, or go to pony conventions hehe..

Don't worry, you're far from alone. Being a casual fan of the show and still wanting to participate in this community is fine. I was a casual fan of MLP for quite some time, but I eventually gave into the merchandise - but too much! lol

As for whether you are a Brony or not - that is completely and totally up to you! You can call yourself one regardless of how much of a fan you are, or you can not, even if you love FiM!

I really got myself into the MLP franchise, but I don't fit under any label. In fact, the general MLP fandom does not even have a title - we simply don't need one!

You don't have to anything else other than watching the show to call yourself a brony. However, some people start out just watching the show and eventually start doing stuff like buying merch, drawing fan art, etc.

I started out just watching the show, and now I have a bunch of pony related images on my tablet & computer, a pony profile picture on most of my social medias, and a pony lock screen on my tablet.

I can relate to you. MLP is just another one of my favorite cartoons that I watch. I don't really go all out. It would be nice to have some merch though. Then again, I want merch of anything that I like. :P
