One thing that is bad about the show.

Honestly, the fact that it's so safe. MLP has done a great job in writing stories and characters that can be enjoyed by people of all age groups, but at the end of the day it is still a show that is primarily targeted at very young girls and therefore it takes very few risks. Take a look at a show like Gravity Falls which takes many risks, Bill Cipher is probably one of the most terrifying villains in modern cartoon series (by comparison, Discord made cotton candy clouds and chocolate rain), and it is these risks that make Gravity Falls such a great series and risks that MLP lacks imo.

I was going to talk about Celestia, but people beat me to it.

So, I'm going to to say that the cartoon needs to take better care with the stakes in those "epic" episodes. Or at least make sure that "epic" actually is epic. They ignore the existence of other races, other nations, everything that isn't Equestria. Now that I know that Equestria is just one country I wonder why is it that Tirek didn't mess with the gryphons. Or when Starlight Glimmer was messing with time, everything seems contained within Equestria. It makes these whole messes with Sombra, Tirek, Nightmare Moon look like local conflicts, while they're supposed to make it look like these are world-changing events. The whole time Twilight was talking with Nightmare Moon I was waiting for some gryphons to walk in, smash NM's face with a morning star, grab a pony and tell them to raise the sun. Or else!

For dumb, self-important fics about mythology, ponies and fascist griffons that can't figure friendship out.

And I'm just getting started.

The fact that they can't really peg Spike's personality down. He's an interesting and supportive character... Until it get's to his specials. Than he's an obnoxious twat.

  • Avoiding certain morals (not everyone can be your friend, achievements alone don't define people), and having black-and-white morality on certain morals that have valid counterarguments ("Trade Ya", "Green Isn't Your Color").

Trouble addressing certain issues such as death, mainly because of the show's marketing origins.

Not using secondary or tertiary characters enough, and making Equestria helpless without Twilight and the Mane 6. This is especially true in two-parters except for "The Cutie Map". It would help the show's message to have the secondary characters help more out in the solutions to conflicts.

Not capitalizing on story opportunities for underdog characters Spike and Scootaloo. Most of the main characters are overachievers. Spike, a humble servant, has had the worst character development over the past couple of seasons, and Scootaloo, a character with a disability and an unknown family situation, has barely been explored at all in that timeframe.

Rigid formatting that makes story arcs and continuity development relatively rare, keeping most stories confined to single 22-minute episodes.

Trouble with creating compelling villains with complex motivations and/or backstories beyond being absent of friendship. Not being able to create a constant, stable villain or other motivator for the Mane 6 beyond the concept of friendship.

The reason I stopped becoming a Brony is because every season seems to be getting worse and worse, this I may get hate for but MLP is like The Walking Dead of cartoons, it would have it's good parts, then its amazing parts!, but then it bastardizes itself and turns into a mess that is very hard to clean up.

  1. The general lack of good male characters.
  2. The show's generally awful handling of characters with anxiety disorders and mental illnesses.
  3. *The decrease of Slice of Life stories.
  4. My Little Pony: Racism is Magic The questionable undertones of episodes that feature non-pony characters, excluding Zecora's post-Bridle Gossip appearances and most episodes featuring Spike.
  5. The portrayal of Discord post-"redemption".
  6. *Color schemes and designs of certain ponies.
  7. The unreasonable lack of a single Princess Celestia episode.
  8. Starlight Glimmer post-The Cutie Remark.
  9. How Derpygate was unprofessionally handled.
  10. Spike in general.

* = Minor complaint.

Well for a show that is intended to 6 year old girls, I can see why they lack a male audience.

The one thing bad with this show is that any races besides ponies are shown as

-Ugly

-Greedy

-needlessly aggressive

-in need of the message of harmony and friendship

Even Spike, who was raised with ponies, comes from dragons whom are labled as all these things, and he's better because he lives among ponies.

It may be prudent to show another race that has their act together that AREN'T ponies, juuuuust saying.

1. Too Much Twilight --- The mane five are collectively not given nearly enough moments to shine in comparison, especially when it comes to two-parters. And things like Twilight having entire two-parters almost all to herself such as in The Cutie Re-mark should definitely not happen at this point.

2. Rushed reformations --- Only a few of them have been done well. Overall, however, reforming villains gives the implication that everyone can change or be turned around, which simply isn't true in real life.

3. Spike abuse --- Stop. Just stop.

4. Episodes that are pretty much devoted to Spike abuse --- Looking at you, Princess Spike.

5. The villains --- The whole "ancient evil rising up to conquer Equestria" thing has been done to death at this point and is beyond redundant.

The more recent spike episode, it didn't bring much to the table for the older audience, it was rather predictable. Arguably sure it referenced bronycon and that might be cool, but well I guess they need little kid eps sometimes right?

-No celestia episode (We've got a luna one, why not celestia?)

-Starlight's reformation (She pretty much wanted to kill twilight. You can't be friends with someone who tried to murder you)

-The word "everypony" (The words "everyone" or "everybody" are fine, it's not like we go around saying "everyhuman")

Three words:  The theme song.

It's not even that it's a bad theme.  It's just that they should've changed it by now.  I mean, Japan's had four opening songs for the show now, and they're going to have a fifth soon.

Does it count if I say "we need more access to the episodes?" Cuz all I have is YouTube, and so far I haven't been able to find much on there. And I don't have the money for Hulu, or Netflix or anything like that.

www.TV.com has all the episodes on it for free though, If you are having problems finding it.

3. Spike abuse --- Stop. Just stop.

Agreed 1000 times over

For me it's not enough world building, most of the story is in Ponyville or Canterlot, I want to see more locations, and non pony civilizations, for Star Wars, the Chronicles of Narnia and Lord of the Rings gave us variety, it's a shame that the writers have not involved more places we have seen already, like the Crystal Empire, I don't even know the name of it's capital city, it would be nice to see other characters like deer, canines or felines. My biggest pet peeve with the show is, there is no prominent male protagonist, although we have Spike, I wish there would be a good stallion character, like Double Diamond or Braeburn, it would give the audience more flavour to choose from, plus it could give children positive balance of the genders, that is is okay to like feminine things despite being male, or to like masculine things despite being female, that both groups can put aside their differences and do things together, to embrace our differences to complement our similarities, a show like MLP should have more variety, to show that male and female ponies can do what's best for them, rather than do something like Pixar's "Brave", to show that a female character can keep up with males, but show that they can be as good, by being as good as the best efforts of the male characters, it will boast male and female confidence, just like Mulan, the best example of what MLP could have been.

  • 3 weeks later...

Really? There's nothing good about it? Don't get me wrong, I know that it isn't a masterpiece but surely something must be at least decent.

Really, there's nothing good there. It sucks.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but the show and the forum are different things, are they not?

It's a forum for a show you deliberately find offensive for the most unreasonably extreme of reasons, not liking the current direction of the show is understandable, but sometimes you have to wonder why you're wasting your time talking about a show you have an extreme dislike for
