Spoiler

"When Pinkie Pie thinks she sees Rainbow Dash throw away one of her pies, she suspects the worst - that Rainbow Dash secretly hates her pies; Pinkie Pie attempts to catch Rainbow Dash in her web of lies." (http://mlp.wikia.com/wiki/Secrets_and_Pies)

When I saw the screener for this episode, I felt...off. Why do I feel off? Well, I feel like this episode will be a recycled plot. Remember that episode when Pinkie Pie throws another party, the very next day, and none of her friends want to attend. Instead of acting normally, her friends act all secretive, and avoid Pinkie as much as possible. Pinkie Pie comes to the conclusion that her friends don't like her, only to find out that they were throwing her a surprise party.

I'm going to guess the plots for this episode.

Plot 1: Pinkie Pie makes pies and gives them to her friends. They at first like the pies, and Pinkie gets all excited like her usual self. She makes more and more pies, and her friends eat them up. One day, Rainbow Dash takes a pie home. Along the way, something happens to the pie, and Rainbow Dash throws it away. Little does she know, Pinkie Pie saw Rainbow Dash throw away the pie. Pinkie Pie suspects that her blue pegasus friend doesn't like her pies, and go on hijinks to get Rainbow Dash to spill the beans. Rainbow Dash tells Pinkie Pie that she loves the pies, but had to throw the other one, because something happened to it. Pinkie Pie realizes that her pies are good and everything is peachy keen again. Lesson: don't jump to conclusions.

Plot 2: Pinkie Pie wants to try something new. She decides to bake some pies, and has Rainbow Dash be her taste tester. Rainbow Dash actually likes each pie she tries. However Rainbow Dash eats more than she can handle. After taste testing, Pinkie Pie gives Rainbow Dash a pie. Disgusted by the pie, Rainbow Dash tosses the pie. Little does she know, Pinkie Pie saw the pegasus throw out the pie. Pinkie Pie then goes on crazy hijinks, to catch Rainbow Dash red-hoofed. Only to find out, that Rainbow Dash loves the pie, but she can only handle so much. Lesson: same as plot 1

Plot 3: Same as plot 2, only Rainbow Dash hates the pie. Pinkie Pie gets Rainbow Dash to confess in the end. Lesson: It's okay to be honest with a friend, even if the truth hurts.

You see, these plots have the same devises that "Party of One" uses. If anything, this episode might be a bit boring. And I know, sometimes TV shows will recycle plots, but mlp has so much more potential.

This episode hasn't even aired, and I'm already whining about it. What is wrong with me?

Anyway, what are your thoughts on this episode? Do you think my predictions hold water?

While I can't remember where I heard this but I'll keep it in a spoiler block if this is true:

Spoiler

I think unlike Party of One it's confirmed Rainbow Dash actually does not like pie. I seem to recall people saying they were going to rewatch all the episodes to she if she ever eats pie because of this confirmation (might have been a tie in comic now that I think about it). So with that in mind the outcome is going to be different but could be plot 3.

Heh, if that turns out to be true, SoarinDash is doomed as a ship. XD

I've seen an upcoming comic revealing that Dashie does not like pie, so maybe it'll have a twist. Hope so, because that's the episode I'm looking forward the least in the remaining season

Party of one is one of the funny episodes we are missing in the last seasons. If Rainbow tries to run from Pinkie, Rarity gets her fading couch and things like that, it would be a great episode.

It's all in the execution though.

This could be a great and zany Pinkie episode, or it could be a predictable and painful to watch trainwreck.

Hoping for the former, obviously :D

There's definitely a possibility that this could be for Pinkie Pie what 28 Pranks Later was for Rainbow Dash.

Hopefully not QUITE that bad...

Of course the plot will be predictable. Every MLP episode is like that. This isn't super sophisticated writing we're dealing with. The point to an MLP episode is the journey, not the destination. For example, Honest Apple was instantly predictable, but was fantastic because the humor was so on point again and again.

So I expect this one will be easy to predict, but the journey will be fun.

Honest Apple isn't exactly a good example, considering that episode was quite unpopular, though I do agree that the journey is important rather than the destination.

As for Secrets and Pies, admittedly, the spoilers from the comics actually made me dread it less, but I worry it'll still be a really bad showing for Pinkie Pie

Yeah this is what I'm worried about. No one deserves to go through that again

Wait, what? Seriously? Why? It was one of the funniest episodes this show has ever produced!

I think it could be funny if the pie thing was just a first act thing, and as the episode goes on Pinkie winds up seeing or hearing stuff without the right context that makes her believe Dash is being deceitful about other stuff with other ponies (and the misinterpretations keep getting more ridiculous). And then at the end she finds out everything was just a misunderstanding. Except the pie thing, that was real, and then quick cut to credits as Pinkie's shock sets in.

Mainly the handling of the characters and moral. Like Applejack just becomes unlikable while she's critiquing all the clothes, and Rarity's at fault for asking Applejack in the first place, or at least not trying to reign her in or explain why creativity is also important to fashion and not just practicality. So in the end none of Applejack's criticisms were helpful since the designs went ultimately unchanged, and she didn't have an effect on the contest since she couldn't even break a tie.

I think we should wait until the episode airs before we jump to conclusions, we've already had several episodes this season which were much better than their synopsis suggested.

It sounds a lot like season one's Party of One.

Which is why I am not terribly interested in it.

The title even recalls a quote from that episode, when pinkie insists that "it's all secrets and lies with these ponies!"

I sort of liked "28 Pranks Later," so I sure hope so. This synopsis has the benefit of resembling one of my favourite episodes ("Party of One") rather than one of my least favourite (The Mysterious Mare-Do-Well").

On the other hand, I rather disliked "Honest Apple" (for essentially the same reasons @Marimo said), so I hope it's not like that.

I hope it's more than a rehash of "Party of One," but I've not enjoyed this season very much (I'm not sure which episodes were "better than their synopsis," as I found more of them to be disappointing), so I'm not counting on it.

A Flurry of Emotions is the first to come to mind.
