gaming "Too old" for video games?

Even though video games have become more mainstream as a hobby, there's still a stigma against adults playing them, with some people thinking you're a manchild for still playing video games as an adult.

Are you ever "too old" for video games?

"Some people" that think this way are wrong. No such thing as being too old for video games. I'm in mid-twenties, and I still play video games regularly, although not as often as my dad. Playing video games was never an exclusively kids' activity to begin with.

I think gaming is a hobby for all ages

honestly that "you're too old to play Video Games" mindset is a bunch of stuff and nonsense if you ask me

personally I think that Video Games are just as much a hobby as something like stamp collecting

I think that no one is too old to play video games. Not only are there video games designed for all ages including adults, video games in general are designed for entertainment and pleasure, and no one is too old for that.

I wonder what is going on in their minds, when they say something like this. “Too old for xy”... I think they are diesrespecting life itself, when they say something like this. It's like thinking their own way of living the life is the better (or only) way and are forgetting that everyone is different, has different interests - and simply: things that make them happy.

But I think those kind of people are more rare, since I only heard this only one or two times in my life.

I've heard this before, not just about video games though, about lot's of things. "You're too old for video games. You're too old for cartoons. You're too old for Anime. You're too old for Comic Books. You're too old for Ice cream." seriously, even ice cream once. I've never understood it, it's like they're utterly determined to suck all the color and joy out of life and make things as dull as humanly possible. As if once you get to a certain age you're suddenly too mature to have fun anymore, because adults sit around and only do serious things every day! Fun is for children, don't you know?

It's stupid, life's hard enough, there's no reason to make it even worse by setting so many arbitrary age rules on so many hobbies or fun things. There's no age limit on having fun, if somebody enjoys doing any of these things and it's not negatively affecting them why should anyone care?

No. However, you do reach an age where video games shouldn't be a priority and shadow other responsibilities, though. I know a guy whose wife left him because when he lost his job, he played way more video games than filling out job applications. Not that what she did was right either, but he could have made a better choice for him and his family.

I wish I had more video game time myself, but the priority list has been shuffled around lately. Hopefully I can carve out some time this upcoming year.

I don't think you're ever too old for video games. And it really doesn't matter what game. You can play sorts of baby/children games as long as you enjoy yourself doing so too. I understand why some people in society think it's a children/young people thing, but if they were more involved with video games, they'd probably think it doesn't matter how old a player is.

What I usually get is that video games aren't for women; I still don't understand how society thinks this way.

Are you ever "too old" for video games?

“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.” - C.S. Lewis

The beauty of being an adult is that you can treat yourself to video games as much as you like! :squee: The notion that video games are for children is pretty antiquated when you consider how mature some games are in their themes and stories.

Regardless, it seems that most of the time, those who say such things are merely projecting their boring worldview onto others, and it's best to ignore them. You've only got this life to live, so best do it in a way that fulfills you, and not the strangers around you who won't matter in the long run.

Nah, no way. In fact, if I had to guess, most video games would be created for people AT LEAST 13 or over, if not mostly 18 or over! Of course, that doesn't prevent kids from playing them. A lot of work has been done in the video game industry to get the idea that "video games are only for children" is not the case. Imagine how angry parents would get without ratings? In fact, if I recall correctly, video game ratings were created because of this.

I've been playing video games since I was five and yeah, I've been told that I've gotten too old for them as I've grown up. Games as a whole aren't something that are meant to be only enjoyed by a specific group. They can appeal to people of any age and have no parameters.

At first I rejected the zero, but that was because I simply didn't understand it. Now I do.

You not "too old" but you should be "too responsible". To fulfill the duties you have as an adult with kids there simply is not time. If you force there to be time then you have neglected some aspect of fatherhood (usually reading to your kids) that "should" be a higher priority.

For adults with no kids I see no issue as you do have free time to use as you please.

(Introspection time, could the focus on gaming be contributing to remaining single) unless the plan is to remain single, for some it is.
