How do you know how to speak English?

This question is directed more towards those who are from countries whom English is not their main language. So how do you know English? Was your family always English speaking, did you learn it because you needed to know it for something?

Well, when I was little, I always loved watching english cartoons insted of lithuanian dubbed ones. I was constantly watching english shows, even though I understood nothing back then. Somehow, after years of watching english programmes on TV and playing english games on my old PSX/PC, I learnt how to speek and write in english. It's like second nature to me now. I just need to practice on the more difficult words and grammar.

And as Lami said, every european school has english classes so it helps too.

Well I had to learn it since them 2nd graders made fun of me XD but I'm Mexican and I learned time by time, by 4th grade I was still in Bilingual classes but my teachers switched me to English only and that ruined the rest of elementary for me XD

I wish I knew another language very well. When I visit one of my friends, her family always speaks Arabic and I surprised them one day by answering a question they asked. It's very expressive so I can sometimes follow what they're saying. I get confused when they switch from Arabic to English because my head only has english mode and foreign language mode and it takes at least 10 seconds to adjust.

I had English classes at school when I was about 8, but like with any elementary school second language course, we didn't do much. I think that what really helped me to learn English were video games and the internet.

When I was a kid, video games were almost never translated to French (my first language) Everything was in English so we all played them without really understanding what was going on. Eventually, I picked up some words and expressions and managed to understand a little bit better.

A bit later, I started going on the Internet a bit more and I went on English websites and forums on which I started to participate which helped me to improve my writing/reading skills.

fascinating by the sound of this thread, non-English speakers pick up English faster than English-speakers pick up other languages.

America must be lazy or not teaching other languages right lol. Probably because there's not a real big need to learn another language since most internet/video games/TV are English anyways.

When I went through my giant anime phase, I tried picking up Japanese but it wasn't working out. Plus the need was fleeting lol.

I learned from videogames and watching american shows way back during the 90's. Since I lived in an area with a large amount of american tourist it really came in handy.

It's actually because other languages are more complicated take Spanish for an Example, it has a bunch of signs and other things like the'res 2 question marks and 3 exclamation marks you need to have there's also the "Accentos" and other letters like 'n' with this thing on the top "~" the double 'l' that makes a 'y' sound, but there's other languages that are way harder XD Edited by Pinkazoid

Actually, English is extremely complicated and hard to learn. I know this from having a mother who has been exposed to it for years, and still isn't completely proficient. She complains all the time about how the words are not spelled as they are pronounced a lot and it doesn't make sense.

In Spanish, most words are spelled as they are pronounced. The accents, whilst I still haven't grasped them quite yet, aren't a complicated concept. Neither is ñ which is just another letter in the alphabet to them. Also, question marks are easy - whenever you ask a question, you put the upside down one in the front as well as the normal one in the back. It's not that hard. It just LOOKS complicated because it's foreign and new, but in actuality, it's not really.

I think the reason the people here have picked it up so fast is because they were exposed at a young age, which makes it super easy to learn another language. If you had picked it up at my mom's age, it would be quite a bit of work.

Anyways, technically, English is my second language. Technicalities. I learned Spanish first, but my ability in Spanish became quickly displaced due to being born in the US and surrounded by English. Schooling, peers, and it everywhere pretty much made my proficiency in English much higher than Spanish.

I know! I felt like a complete idiot when I was struggling in Spanish 2 last year while my distant cousin from Peru could talk circles around me... and she was 5!

I gave up on learning Spanish. Though it is the most used language in the world I never found it useful nor interesting.

I should've taken French in hindsight since half my family is from Canada, but I hardly know them.

My school used to teach Latin and German. They canceled Latin this year due to budget. But they canceled German years back because the teacher got caught selling pot... good old Milton! :P I'd like to know German, such an interesting sounding language!
