When I first started watching ponies, I naturally had zero understanding of the more heinous and nefarious fanworks in the fandom. So, I popped around on Youtube and Newgrounds, saw this Cupcakes thing, and decided to watch it out of curiosity, having no clue what I was getting into.

 

It...was traumatizing. I couldn't look away. I couldn't understand why someone would take such a wonderfully happy setting and twist it into such a horrid mockery of common sense and decency. Luckily, there is an antidote: http://www.equestria...n-darkness.html

 

Cupcakes and grimdark-for-the-sake-of-grimdark fics like it are, I feel, a stain on the community. They spit in the face of what makes the show wonderful. I'm not against grimdark as a genre...hell, one of my all time favorite fanfics is Fallout Equestria, because as heartbreaking and awful as the setting may be, it is beautifully written and still carries the fundamental message of hope and friendship. By comparison, works like Cupcakes do nothing but drag the fandom down.

Yeah, I'm not into grimdark stuff unless its done in a joking manner. Like, I wouldn't mind Ponyville Evil with T-Virus infected ponies or something, but I'm not into something like Cupcakes.

 

It's just sometimes, people take things way too far. And I have no desire to read something like that involving ponies. Clive Barker or Stephen King, sure. I love when they write that stuff. But with ponies? No way.

The fic made me squeam a bit, but that's probably because my mind is good at making fics pretty vivid. The video didn't bother me at all however.

 

Also, if you REALLY think Cupcakes was scary, you'll probably shit bricks at the creepy pasta stuff you can find on youtube :I

I don't know completely if this is considered NSFW, but it really depends on how sensitive you are to gore. Also, why do you keep saying "watch" as if it's a video? All of the animated versions of it are fairly tame with a few exceptions. I would personally say to read it just so you could get all the jokes the fanbase makes based off of it, but if you don't like grimdark and would not like have any of the characters from the show mentally defaced, don't.

I have seen one of the animations on YouTube that was pretty gory, and although I wasn't that grossed out I didn't honestly feel like watching the rest of it. I had seen another long animation that was like a parody and was really funny, although I can't find it anymore

There's not really a way to give it 1-10 rating, or give a recommendation on if you should read it or not. Whether you like it or not depends on how you approach it. The description you gave is just really what it's about. It might as well be called "The fanfic in which Pinkie dismembers RD while making "humorous" puns and bad jokes" because that's it. Don't expect a masterpiece or anything, just a gore filled story. If you've got a weak stomach, stay the hell away.

 

And if you do end up reading it, which most bronies do at some time or another, I do recommend reading it's sequel, "Rocket To Insanity", which actually gives "Cupcakes" some substance (but by no means a reason for reading it if you weren't already going to).

XDDDDD wow ok then heres some advice from a horror writer who also mutilates ponies.

 

The fic is always and I mean ALWAYS more graphic than a silly 2 min video.

I am serious about this. and Cupcakes is on the low side of the gore scale to the dark side of the mlp fandom..

here is the evil side of the fandom breakdown.

 

Rainbow Factory (more story than gore which is always loved)

Cupcakes (0 story development and pure gore, that it.. I like story more)

S.A.M. or sweet apple massacre ( some story, filly rape, incest and gore.Big mac is a sick, sick pony)

Cheerriles garden (wins the gore catagory by being saw with ponies. oh yes multiple killings all different all brutal. It like 10k words)

 

now there is a cupcakes spinoff I love and its called 'Borderline'

Tons and tons of story development. Its like the silence of the lambs with pinkamina.

I know what happens in it and how graphic it is, and while I have no real issue with gore and violence, the fact that it was based off of MLP FIM kinda sickens me. I prefer to keep the innocence of the show intact and "cupcakes" could have potentially given the show and the Brony community a bad rep. Thankfully that didn't happen, but its still sick and disturbing. Even more so when you consider the source material. Avoid at all costs, trust me.

Oh man, If you read Cupcakes, don't bother with Rocket to Insanity. That was lame, A Precious Rainbow is just so much better.

 

Here's the order I recommend...Cupcakes>A Precious Rainbow>Cupcake Killer. A Precious Rainbow is a pretty damn good fanfic.

 

EDIT: Media Brony's right, Cupcakes hurt our image irreparably.

I read it a while ago. Aside from the gore, it's other claim to fame (in my opinion) is how poorly written it is. I'm not bragging when I say my own (original, not fanfic) grimdark stories are much better. While I have no problem with people writing fanfics, I think it isn't nice to do things like that to other people's characters. My one and only (incomplete) MLP:FIM story is absolutely totally rated "G"! I don't have the heart to do anything bad to ponies!
