Can We Please Stop Focusing On The Negative?

Over the last week or so I have seen two threads about death threats one of them about Derpy and the other about Equestria Girls. I have seen all sorts of hate against cloppers and other examples of the "dark side" of the fandom and how they supposedly "make us look bad". It seems like people keep putting the fandom on some kind of pedestal and expect everyone to be well behaved at all times which I am sorry ladies and gents isn't realistic. Yes you are going to have jerks and crazies and I am not saying we should excuse their behavior but the problem is alot of us have been focusing so much on them that we often forget about all the good.

It is one thing to acknowledge that this fandom is not perfect as I have done so many times and have criticized certain elements of it myself but I really don't see how all this focus on the negative is really going to solve anything. It is not going to stop death threats, if anything it could backfire and encourage more of them because lets face it alot of these people are trolls doing it for attention and it is just depressing.

I won't back down from defending those parts of MLP but so long as the haters back the hell off for ONE DAY. For a fandom that was brought together because of a really positive-feely show, we're teetering off a bit again now to the negative side too much.

I agree. I wish people would remind themselves that one of the MLP writers are doing the writing for the movie. Meghan McCarty is and she's the one who wrote A Canterlot Wedding. Not to mention Daniel Ingram is doing the music so we will get some good musical scores. Original voices are in the movie to so there's  no need to be 100% negative about EQG.

I think one of the problems is that there's too many duplicating topics that all convey the same thing. Why don't we just make a general hate topic or something? Because pretty much all I see on the pony boards are "I HATE EQUESTRIA GIRLS" or "HATERS SUCK". This is most likely why I don't even bother posting in them anymore because there's just too much stupid drama.

this idea should be sented to a mod..... we will call it the complaining thread!!!

We invite drama when we have whole SUB FORUMS for multiple topics for the same subject. Alicorn Twilight, Equestria Girls...how much longer can we complain about the same 2 topics. How many new threads do we need? What's said is said, move on people (although the developments for EQgirls are newer this week withthe trailer). Same with new threads about clop vs the the mega threads (and the anti-cloppers who on there thinking their being edgy by insulting their fellow bronies on there, like they're not going to respond). We don't need multiple new subjects when we have mega threads on them already.

This is what happens when you havea full YEAR between seasons and some bad/different projects get thrown in at the tail end. It makes the community a bit b*tchy and prone to complaining about the same things and nothing new to focus on or get inspired about. But i agree with the OP, if we can't keep it positive and only focus on the negative then we're going to bring each other collectively down. I know morale is low until season 4 starts but lets try to make it through spring, summer, and fall. Maybe spend more time talking about fannon if the cannon isn't there.

I agree with much of the above. This fandom's main attractant is it's friendly and accepting atmosphere. We damage that when we focus on elements we don't like, and rehash them over and over.

There's way more to like about the show and the fandom than to dislike.

I agree, the negativity is getting a bit harsh as of more recently I think, there is still a good bit of great things about the fandom and great people in the fandom.

Negativity doesn't lead to much of anything productive really anyways.

See, look where we are now. We are all complaining and hating about threads that complain and hate... Can anypony say irony. :)

I don't look at negatives. Just ignore it! If it says "I HATE EQG" and you like EQG just don't go into the thing.

I'm an optimistic and positive kind of guy, so people complaining doesn't really bother me that much. I agree that sometimes people take it too far, but without differences of opinion, this forum and the world would be a very boring place. I don't expect everyone to love Equestria Girls or Alicorn Twilight, but I also don't expect people to silence contrary opinions. Like I said, yes, some of the negativity is taken a step too far, but let's also remember that, while we're supposed to be a community that's brought together by a very awesome show, we can't possibly all agree on everything. That's why we have to tolerant different opinions.

*Takes a puff on pipe*

That's my two cents. I do have to also agree that making a million topics about the same thing is a tad annoying, but as long as they keep getting folded into the megathreads, I don't think they're that much of an issue. Although it does illustrate that some folks need to check for similar topics before creating a new one.

The intense hate against Alicorn Twilight and Equestria Girls is emotionally harming the creators of the show, and even though I dislike the look of Equestria Girls, I can't help but feel sorry for them.  I hope nobody stops working on the series because of this.  It would be a shame if we missed out on some great episodes because people couldn't keep their anger in check.

I love you.

Personally I think the word "hater" is an over used terminology in a world where its gotten easy to just stick labels onto everything.

Just because someone disagrees with another's view seems to automatically generate this title.

In terms of a fandom in general, FIM's older fandom is just like any other.  "One bad apple spoils the whole bunch" as to say- there will always be a few fanatics who take things way farther than every should be taken in any fandom, and because of these blemishes upon the fandom, that's what the people from the outside looking in will see more of.  Our society (I am talking about American society, not sure about European countries since I don't live there) thrives on negatives (just look any newspaper, news show, anything news-related).  Anything good and wonderful is simply glossed over while bad things (such as child kidnappings, murders, thefts etc) are so much focused on (and often skewed enough so that people don't know the whole story anyways) that we have a very hard time seeing (let alone appreciating) the good that does happen.

However, I do believe our fandom is much more "gentle" than others.  I haven't heard of bronies committing suicide over EQgirls or Alicorn Twilight, nor harming themselves in any way (besides ranting so much their blood pressure rises).  To my knowledge, no one is cutting themselves, sending bombs to DHX, or anything of the sort that puts their own, the creators, or any other peoples' lives at risk and/or scaring them to the point where they won't even leave their houses.  We have people in the fandom sticking up for the creators and doing what we can to "tame" those who could be deemed "haters".  We are not only being there for one another in this regard (whether we disagree or not about aspects of FIM) and by giving fans an opportunity to rant in a place where they (for the most part) feel safer to place their own opinions, even if they go against the fandom norm (i.e. love and tolerate).  I believe this is a good thing for the brony community, because many other fandoms (as far as my knowledge goes) do not provide (by their own accord) communities where people not only feel welcomed, but also safe to share their own opinions and perceptions about the what we are all fans about.  In this technologically advanced era, it's easier than ever for fandoms to encourage more positive behavior from the fan base through the fan base.  We will always have a few bad apples, but for the most part, we can express our opinions without fear or fault, that's why I believe the DHX staff have not only heard us, but have included us into their web of creation for the show (Derpy, DJPON3, and other fan favs. becoming canon characters).

No fandom is perfect, but I think because this fandom really steps out of the cultural norm, people seem to expect either the best of us, or the worst of us.  The brony fandom is changing cultural norms, breaking gender stereotypes like no other, and are encouraging an openness towards entertainment that I do not believe has ever been emulated before.  WE are changing the western world in many ways, and the more we grow, the more of a mark we will leave once the FIM show ends, and we all move on with our lives.  That's why there are those putting us on a pedestal to be the 'ideal' fandom and that's why people are calling us out to be gay nutjobs with no life.   I realize I am ranting, but I hope I make some sense.  I am just trying to put this into perspective as best as I can.

True, that is one of the many reasons why I don't like the broad use of the word "hater" to refer to all non fans bothers me because it simply not accurate, that is why when I refer to haters I only refer to people that actually go out of their way to bash not only the show but the fans as well. I suppose I mainly started this thread because I got a bit annoyed at how people tend to put the fandom on a pedestal and whenever someone does something crazy like sends a death threat or even just controversial yet harmless like clopping people overreact and talk about how ashamed they are of this fandom or how we need to keep obsessing over people like that because they are "making us look bad" when it really just draws more attention to the negative and drowns out the positive.

Who needs a positive attitude when there are spin-offs, character advancement, and a background pony (albeit amazing BGP) who was brought back in the supposedly terrible season finale of the supposedly terrible season 3, to hate with a severe passion?

A show about friendship, kindness, loyalty, imagination, happiness, and now actual character development (something that many cartoons will not dare to touch) surely does not deserve a positive nature from us. Why should it? Hasbro is EEEEEVILLLLLLLLLLLL. Twilicorn was obviously a cash in with zero oppurtunities whatsoever and now the show is ruined, because Twilight will obviously change dramatically and for the worse and all of the other characters will advance too, and like I said, we LOATHE character advancement. Twilight achieving something great is the worst thing to happen to this show, until Rainbow Dash becomes a Wonderbolt that is.

Equestria Girls is clearly something that is evil as well. Think about it. It is a movie, that is not tied with the canon of FiM and was confirmed to have nothing to do with season 4. What's not to hate? The writers must be loco in their cocoa. A phrase I used to love but GAAAAAH obviously Twilicorn is unbalanced, so Pinkie Pie means nothing now. How can we even begin to think about loving the show with this non canon spin-off thingy messing with everything?? My thinking process is already being altered.

Season 3 was just terrible overall. It introduced a whole new kingdom (we don't want that), new villians (we don't want them), new regular ponies (we don't want them either), reformed Discord (because we WANT Discord to be exactly the same all the time, because any kind of change is for those who want the show to be ruined, after all), and showed (I hate this so much....) actual advancementment in one of our beloved characters. Now, the doors are all closed, because achieving = deceiving as we all know.

I mean, come on writers! Twilight wasn't overpowered like this before! Sure, she was the most powerful element of harmony, Celestia's #1 student, already skilled in magic, and essentially the main character of the show, but those damn wings, you do not know what havoc those will bestow upon our once great show.

Could it get any WORSE???

I wish we could stop focusing on the negative, but there are some people making us look bad and well when we look at the negative side then we can think of positive things from the negative. But, the death threats and the complaining have got to stop. But all of the negativity have  a reason for it to start.

but it sure came out that way when I read your post.

I am simply saying that people shouldn't flip out every time someone does something they either don't agree with like demonizing cloppers for example or because someone does something stupid like sends a death threat. There is no point in demonizing others for things we don't agree with because it is not going to stop them from doing it and is only encourages unnecessary conflict and there is no point in giving attention to whackos that send death threats because alot of them are trolls that are just doing it to get attention and those and it gives undue attention to things we have no control over anyway.

I have had several very strong opinions on quite a few matters, I have been one of the harshest critics on here on twilicorn and have said many times and make no apologies for it that MMC is the worst episode of the entire series. Despite that though I have ackowledged that the concept as premature as it was can still work. I have voiced my strong opposition to Derpy being censored to the point where I even made a youtube video on the subject. And though I have said that I didn't really like the design style of the mane 6 in Equestria Girls and think that it sounds a bit cliched have remained neutral on it because I think there is no point in panicking over something that won't affect the main show anyway. But even though I have lost my temper on occasion about Derpy I have for the most part remained fairly civil about everything else though I am trying as best as I can on the Derpy situation despite my strong dislike of the Derpy complainers.
