[scientist voice]

Unlike those of terrestrial equines, the hooves of most members of the three Equus equstrialis sapiens subspecies are fully covered by dermis and coat, producing what some refer to as the 'marshmallow' appearance of their appendages.  The fine hairs of their hoof-coat are able to generate powerful Van der Waals forces, in similar fashion to the fibers of a gecko's feet.  Through means we do not yet fully understand, the 'ponies' of Equestria are able to achieve remarkable levels of fine motor control by selectively amplifying and dampening these forces in differential patterns across the surface of the hoof.

Love how despite in verse explanation we still see such debate :P

While not typically capable of such in OUR world, that doesn't mean our physics and blah blah apply in THEIRS.

Its a FICTIONAL and entirely FANTASY world for one. Besides that, every time someone says "oh that can't be done" someone else goes out and finds a way to make it work.

Science loves to debunk itself all the time :P

Screw Logic

Lol anyway I think it might be the type of sword the ponies use.I think the Pegasi and Earth ponies can only hold a certain size.

Unicorns would use magic to lift the sword, Earth ponies would use their mouths, and Pegasi would most likely do the same thing as earth ponies.

Unicorns and Alicorns would most likely use magic, while Earth ponies and Pegasi would most likely grip it with their teeth. Apparently I'm posting this too quickly.

Unicorns would obviously use their magic to wield swords. That's easy.

Pegasi would use their wings to pick up the swords. I say that because I have seen pics of Pegasi using their wings to grab objects like hands. So, I suppose if their wing bones are strong enough, they could use their wings to wield swords.

Earth Ponies just use their hooves. As seen with the Royal Guard, they hold their spears with just one hoof.

Just add a handle and presto! The exception being Rarity and Twilight, they could of course just levitate a sword.

Well nevermind then. I guess they all use hooves.

I guess depending on the race of pony they would hold it differently. I assume that unicorns would use magic and other ponies would hold it ether in there mouth of by hoof and I guess pegausi could hold it with there wings as well. Honestly does it even have to make logical sense how they hold it? A lot of stuff in MLP doesnt make logical sense. :\

Unicorns can use their magic for this cause.

Earth Ponies with their mouth/a handle.

Pegasi with their wings..? Or with a handle.

Octavia can play the cello so a sword is child's play in comparison. Why not just hold it in their marshmallow hooves? Alternatively they could fight with swords in their mouths, Raiden style (war cries of "I am Lightning" are optional). Another alternative could be helmets fitted with spikes like metal unicorn horns. A friend of mine also came up with the idea of the earth ponies fighting with spiked horse shoes, unicorn soldiers fighting with magic and pegasi dropping grapeshot bombs from above. Take your pick.

Why my dear fellow the same way that Lyra holds a drink.

All kidding aside though, we really do have to suspend logic for a moment, at least that of the human world. Aside from the fact that magic exists in the realm that Equestria's in, equines and other sentient creatures are capable of speech and advanced society, we also have to consider that equine anatomy is not compatible to equine anatomy as we know it. That's considering the fact that ponies in MLP, FIM can bend their limbs in ways far beyond what ponies in our world could do.

But just looking at the Royal Guards I think its pretty definitive that ponies, and very possibly other sentient creatures are capable of grasping objects with their forelimbs alone.

250px-Station_Guards_S02E25.png

Notice there the Royal Guards hold the spears in their forehooves, without the aid of any additional limbs, handles, or magic. Based upon that and numerous other canon examples, it should be safe to say that ponies can wield an object like a sword with their forelimbs alone.

(ever noticed how weird applejacks legs look here? lol)

What about the tail? Just wrap their tails around it.

It seems alot more effective to use one's tail rather than their mouth. Better range of motion and stuff. I can just see the poor ponies giving themselves whiplash from using their mouths.

Besides, i think that's the only way they could achieve the same sort of moments as s human could using their arm.

...

Or they could just add a handle/make their own swords like someone else said :D Or just magically hold them with their hooves despite the logic against it like they do all the time.

Actually, I gave this a bit of thought and thought that it was an excellent idea, so I made a rough model of a handled sword and got this, what do ya think?

With magic, of course. Wait, if you're NOT a unicorn, how would you...this calls for a google search. I shan't be long.

Aha! I knew it. This is how it's done! If Applejack can do it, all the ponies can.

Hmm. Despite the fact that ponies don't really use guns/swords, etc. etc.?

Well, there would probably be a handle on the sword so the pony could stick her hoof through much like they do for drinks. And Rainbow Dash can hold a book with her hooves, and she can also write a legible letter to the Princess with her mouth. Scootaloo and Apple Bloom have been seen to write with their mouths as well, so they could probably hold a sword with that mouth.

thanks for all the replies guys, i think i may use the hoof method, but then theres the problem of two handed weapons. you cant really hold a battle axe with one hoof.

Yes, you can hold one in one hoof, because real battle axes and warhammers were usually one-handed. Two-handed 'battle' axes were usually like the northern long axes and the pollaxes/halberds that descended from them/combined them with other things. The heads weren't *that* much bigger than the one-handers in order to maintain maneuverability. Unless you're dealing with bardiche derivatives, which blur the line between cleavers and axes, but are again more a poleweapon than what most people think of as a 'two handed' weapon...  :)

Sorry, I've had to do this lecture at various schools as a 'special guest' on occasion. I normally do more 'how they lived' kind of thing, but medieval warfare always comes up.

I didn't see these mentioned. I doubt they'd use swords proper. I'd imagine they'd use their mouths to hold something more akin to Deer Horn Knives, since they'd be perfectly balanced and thus be able to move extremely fast with them, and also be able to charge along with swinging:

Deerhorn%20Knife%20Set.jpg or black-ronin-ninja-ring.jpg

are good examples of their design.

But the handle sword is also a good idea, it's just not as dynamically efficient as something they could use with their mouths. I could see either working, though.

Hmm I guess they will have to have quite the strong jaw to wield this, right?

Not that one can apply real-life logic to a cartoon but...do you know if a horse/pony do have strong teeth/jaws?

Horses have some of the strongest jaws of land mammals. Upwards of 800 pounds of pressure just on the teeth. That's probably somewhere around 350 psi considering the low surface area. That'd crunch your arm in half, no problem :(

Their necks are also strong enough to swing it with great force.

Overall if a horse charged me with a deer horn knife in mouth and it was trained to use it, I would be freaking terrified, lol.

Of course, ponies are weaker than full horses, but I would estimate a Shetland could put out at least 150 psi, enough to damage if not outright fracture your arm bones.
