Pegasi Abuse: Are there too many pegasus OCs?

Oh yes, there are too many pegasus OCs/fancharacters. I mean, if people want to make their pony FC a pegasus, then more power to them. But I've never felt the same way about them as other fans. I never really thought the fantasy to fly was interesting, so as a result, I have way more unicorn and Earth Pony FCs than pegasus ones. It also doesn't help that many of the pegasus FCs talents don't focus on flying, but music or art instead. You might as well make them unicorns if you go for those sort of talents.

Don't get me wrong, I find pegasi in MLP:FiM very interesting and have unique magic, like walking on clouds and controlling the weather. But I find unicorn and Earth Pony magic more interesting to think about.

Well there are.

There's too many Alicorns, Pegasus, Changeling, and Unicorn OC's.

Pegasi may be abused, but that's nothing compared to the amount of Unicorns you see. I'm sure it's because Pegasi and Unicorn's are special and different than an Earth Pony. An Earth Pony is the closest a human can relate, and they can't use awesome magic or zip around.

Pegasi are overused, yes.

I've been wondering...if pegasi are so popular in the fandom, why are there not as many pegasi in the show? Or have we just not seen them yet? O.o

Pegasi are definitely overused. However when I was designing my OC at first, flight sounded like a really good idea. However there are  other options if you want your OC to fly, Griffins, Bat pony's (like my OC) and even other non cannon creatures such as hyppogrith's (Silver Quill). So Pegasi are overused and there are other options if you simply want your OC to fly.

I hadn't noticed an over abundance of pegasi, actually. I've seen a lot of earth pony OCs. And very few unicorns, to be honest. But hey, I love all the pony races (and other Mlp races as well). I tend to make earth pony characters, myself. :)

It's up to everyone themselve, what OC they do.

I have a pegasi as my OC. And yes, his talent doesn't have to do with flying, but there are 2 Reasons I choiced pegasi.

1.Best pony is one and

2.I myself in reality am afraid of hights, with that afraid of flying too. My OC is a pegasi, not afraid of flying and heights.

Legends never die. Ponies neither.

I guess the lure of flying through the skies is pretty strong. If I was a pony, I would prefer to be a pegasus for that very reason. However, most of my OCs end up being unicorns, somehow. ;)

I try to find a balance in my ocs but given my main is Rune and she is a unicorn and my 2ed is Sallie who is also a earth pony,  so it depends mostly on the person if anything.     If that person finds themselves liking one race over the other and puts some time into the oc,  I don't think race really should manner.     Earth ponies can be fun in how you can play or what you can do with them and have draw backs just like any other race or none-pony!

@,

Hehe why do you think I switched to a Zebra?  I don't think we need to regulate it or anything but I do share the sentiment. The biggest groaner for me is always how the usual reason is "I want to fly." Yeah, who doesn't?! To me, an OC, particularly if it's a ponysona should speak to something fundamental about you as an individual that's what makes cutie-marks so central to the mythos. As much as "wanting to fly" is a common desire, is flying really all it means to be a pegasus? Fluttershy lives on the ground and has had to been pushed or push herself to really fly at top speed. I read it once described that a common trait of pegasi is passion, even if it's subdued in one of their cases, Fluttershy and Dash both are passionate people in their respective fields.

Not saying that is what "it means" to be a pegasi or if even that's a thing, but that's sort of the question I think one should ask themselves. "What does the kind of pony I am say about me that the other two do not say?"

Race/species is only one tiny aspect of what makes an original character. Still part of the reason my ponysona is an earth pony is that it is the most underused of the three pony races. It also symbolises how you can't get everything you want in life, because Midnight would love to experience flying or doing magic and obviously he can't, but that's okay.

I have made other OCs that are pegasi/unicorns.

Well, ah... hmm...

My main OC/Ponysona is a pegasus, yes, but that was birthed more out of my personal love for almost all winged mythological creatures even before I knew of the show; griffons, hippogriffs, winged dragons, wyverns, faeries, phoenixes, harpies, and of course, pegasi.

And while I know a lot of people don't like the "I love flying" reason -- guys, seriously? If you've never flown (a.k.a. piloted or copiloted a plane) then you have no idea how amazing it is. A few years ago, I copiloted at least 10 hours of flight, and it was AWESOME.

I also really love the elements. Down here in Texas, our motto is "If you don't like the weather, wait 10 minutes." because it always changes. We have thunderstorms, tornadoes, blizzards, sandstorms, heat waves, etc. Nature is a truly awesome thing, and I think a lot of people see pegasi as the "masters of the storm" or something.

Plus I really like weather magic... because I'm a lightning elementalist freak. Whenever I play fantasy games, lightning is always my element. Alternatively, if there's no "lightning elementalist", I go for wind... so there's that...

I think a lot of people prefer pegasi just because they seem to have more advantages than other ponies. I mean -- come on, who doesn't want to fly, control lightning, make tornadoes, etc? Of course, a lot of that is specific to Rainbow Dash (as her cutie mark IS symbolic of her weather control), but still...

Pegasi are awesome.

Too many pegasus OCs, not at all. Considering they are one of the three main pony races in the show, there can't really be too many. Plus, there are good reasons behind why many like them. Ever since their debut they have been shown with amazing traits and cool personalities. Not to say Earth ponies and unicorns don't, but pegasi have always stood out.

For one, they can fly. Flight is something many aspire to do, and pegasi can do it. Secondly is weather control. Being able to manipulate the weather is both useful and boast-worthy. Lastly, pegasus OCs are easy and fun to create. The pegasus culture and behavior we see in the show is perfect OC material. They can be cocky and sporty like Rainbow Dash, Shy and caring like FLuttershy, or somewhere in the middle. Plus, flight and weather manipulation open lots of opportunities in storytelling. I could go on forever about why many love to make pegasus OCs.

When that EQD poll was taken, pegasi were the most common OCs, but I'd argue that spot has been taken by unicorns now. Because of people and posts saying that there were too many pegasus OCs, many were turned away from creating pegasus OCs. The fandom kinda turned against them (which is really sad). While pegasus OC numbers were decreasing, unicorn ones were increasing. Unicorns were getting more and more powerful in the show, and the fandom started praising them more. This inevitably caused more people to make unicorn OCs. Plus, I see more unicorn lovers on these forums than pegasus lovers. Considering they were already close in the rankings, it would seem that unicorns would be at the top now (Maybe we need to make a topic called Unicorn abuse ;)).

So overall, I disagree. There are not too many pegasus OCs. Even if there were, there's a really good reason for it. They look aesthetically pleasing, have intresting abilities, and have fun personalities. I honestly think we need more pegasus OCs :yay:.

When I made myself a pegasus, it's because it's what I felt the most like. Some of it was a little because of a character I made a username on another board, but looking in myself, that's really what I felt the most like inside.

Though I'm not the super speedy and sporty type like pegasi usually are, but then again not all actual pegasi in the show are like that too.
