Safe Search Wrap Up

Recommended Posts

Hello all! I'm currently participating in something called SafeSearchWrapUp. What is that, you ask? Here's a description from the original source of the movement, BroniesAgainstBullsh!t.

#SafeSearchWrapUp is heavily community driven effort to help make the SafeSearch features on image-search engines such as GoogleImages, Bing, or Youtube be free of NSFW content. Every cartoon from “Avatar: The Last Airbender” to “Young Justice” contains fan made pornographic works referred to as Rule-34. Rule-34 is a catch all term detonating porn of ANYTHING and EVERYTHING, cartoon or not. However searching up images of any animated series will likely turn up these images, even on the first few pages.

As the teen and adult fans of the show, we have to be considerate of the younger target audience. A lot of parents and their children may be looking up images of their favorite characters to print out and put on their wall or such. As a community we can make image searching safer for the young ones and their parents. No shutting down or deleting things from existence, simply keeping it off SafeSearch as a courtesy for others.

The Game Plan:

Everyone should pick at least one search term they think would commonly used by kids and their parents, such as “My little pony twilight sparkle”. You can search at your leisure through a few pages… say 5-10 at least? However, on the 7th and 20th of every month we can all do it in large droves. If the call is sent out all at the same time, like a tradition then more people are likely to participate. Additionally, if Google or Bing gets a lot of flags for the same image from a lot of people- we can assume they will be more likely to remove it.

What to look for? Gore, blood, penises, vaginas, and perhaps lingerie. Just use your best judgement. Honestly if its something you wouldn’t look at while at work or show to a kid, then its probably not something we want showing up in a safe-search! If you think it should be done out of safe search as well, then thats your call to make.

How To Flag:

On Google, simply enlarge an image and go to Send Feedback circled here and enter comment notifying them the image is “not suitable for children” or something along those lines:

On Bing, simply click the flag image in the lower left corner when you hover over an image. Then check the “Adult” checkbox. Quick and easy! Lets do this!

This event occurs on the 7th and 20th of every month. What do you think about it? Should people be doing this? Will you join in, or oppose it, or simply not care?

I'll probably join in, to be honest. I have a little cousin that loves MLP, and I'd hate for her to find out about all the R34 stuff at her age, so I get the point of the project.

It's not doing anything harmful, just keeping the risqué stuff away from the kiddos   :derp:

Yeah, I think I'll participate too. I don't have a problem with r34 in and of itself, however the possibility of children seeing on image searches it is indeed a problem so yeah - I approve of this.

Also, I was image searching pony stuff yesterday - has anyone else found that [insert Pony Here] rule 34 isn't appearing in the suggested searches anymore - even if you start to type it fairly explicitly? This is with safe search off by the way.

Additionally, does the prevalence of this stuff differ between countries? Because I've seen r34 once in a regular search with safe search turned off even though I look up fanart and whatnot fairly regularly.

I was sure I'd get an R34 result with Spitfire, but nope.

I didn't have SafeSearch on, but I was still suspicious that rule 34 might not show up at all due to some settings thingy I might have changed, so I double-checked just to be sure:

Wow, you're right! :D I didn't even know that. I have no idea why that is, but I'm glad. People who aren't looking for that stuff shouldn't have to see it or encounter it in any way, at least in my opinion.

I have heard many people complain about rule 34 being too easy for children to see and while I have no problem with rule 34 even I can appreciate that concern. It is about time people with that concern are actually doing something productive, too many of them have tried these ridiculous campaigns to scapegoat people who enjoy that stuff (cloppers in particular for reasons I will never understand). People that don't want to see that stuff shouldn't have to and something being able to make a parents job easier to prevent their kids from seeing that while still allowing adults who want to see it to see is something I can support.

I think it's cool.  Hopefully it's not just R34 but grimdark and gory content too.  One of my worst fears has been my 7 year old cousin stumbling onto the Smile HD video.  I love the video myself, but that's going to give her nightmares.

Not if I'm trying to find R34.

I didn't really catch the gist of that message, but it seemed like it's trying to completely clear Bing, Google, etc., completely void of NSFW content, which isn't something I want. Now, if it's stuff that managed to slip through the SafeSearch barrier and is popping up when Safe Search is active, yeahh, get that stuff out of there, but it's borderline controlling if you're trying to eliminate R34 and stuff all together from the most popular search engines.

Might need a bit more explaining, but if you're trying to clean it off of Safe Search, all power to you; if you're trying to clear it off those search engines all together, then no, that's just wrong and controlling.

(5 - 10 year olds shouldn't really be on the internet, anyway, imho.)

This is a great idea omg. I just search Fluttershy on google and not even 2 pages down there is inappropriate content that a child should not be seeing. I reported the ones I saw . I strongly suggestion everyone take a few minutes to report some of these images.

I started to laugh when i saw Bing.

the way I understand this is to improve the PG13 filter thingy on because you might get ''weird pictures'' even with it on.

I mean sure its great but if you as a parent allow your child to be on the internet.. you might run into a few problems.

Sure its great... as long as you dont take my precious ''things'' away from me.. jk lol im clearly not into that...orrrrr

I too support the idea of improving the safe search system on the popular search engines, especially for the sake of the young fans of the show who could accidentally encounter such disturbing images. For me personally, coming across these promiscuous pictures is the last thing I want to see when searching for adorable and funny pictures of the characters from the show. I think this a great ideal approach which would hopefully better improve the safety and well-being of the younger generations here in the brony community. :)

I think this is actually a pretty decent campaign for those who want to be active to do so. It's much better then trying to shut down tumblr's you don't agree with or try to remove clop from places that filter it. I hope people include grimdark in these efforts as they're just as inappropriate for young children.

I even heard of a campaign that you can could add a blocklist of sites to your tumblr so that sites who dont add nsfw in front of character names won't show up in general character searches. I will say it saddens me when adult tumblr's don't tag things right so they'll show up on safe searches there. Its a shame too when adult sites post foalcon or human x pony (because they aren't allowed in tumblr's TOS) or when these same sites reblog stuff without giving artists souorces (art theft basically). These sites seem to coexist with those following the rules and yet many sites the play by the rules get taken down w/o appeal. It really seems like a double standard. Taking down someone's tumblr should only be for flagrant violations and after several pm letters to that blog owner.  I will say since kids shouldnt be going on tumblr anyway its not that big a DEAL to enforce it like youtube and google. .

In the end though its the parent responsibility to supervise their kids on the internet, not the brony community. If we can make small steps to make it a safer place w/o creating loads of additional internal conflict and shutdowns then let's go ahead and do so.

I like the idea. I support NSFW, but those images shouldn't be appearing in the safe search anyways. Keep the show somewhat pure for the intended demographic and their parents.

At least until the kids are 13 or so and start "exploring" on their own by turning safe search off.

I haven't really noticed this on Google Images search, but on sites like Derpibooru it gets real fucking annoying when all I want to do is find cool pictures of Rainbow Dash, and I get are pictures of her getting fucked by a rhinoceros.  Even with the safe search on, it sometimes blocks pictures that are safe, and fails to block porn.  I guess these systems are not perfect.

And Here we see the Proper way to handle NSFW Pony.  Politely flag the content so Google and Bling know not to have it show up when you are using safe search.  Not rally hate groups to take the stuff off line.

Great idea. It doesn't remove clop art or r34 from the Internet for cloppers, and will make sure younger folks won run into this kind of stuff while scrolling down. You could probably send "squads" to search certain characters on certain browsers.

Tag them appropriately so they won't. TBH i thought derpibooru is tagged and filtered very well but i bet it needs constant upkeep to make it so.

This is definitely worth it, and it does not just encompass the MLP fandom, but for all fandoms. Bringing this up again.

Remember this guys,

How To Flag:

On Google, simply enlarge an image and go to Send Feedback circled here and enter comment notifying them the image is “not suitable for children” or something along those lines:

tumblr_inline_mzvj0bLYU01ry038t.jpg

So older bronies, if you see something NSFW in a very commonly searched item (such as a NSFW image with safe-searched "Pinkie Pie"), send feedback to Google! Apparently loads of bronies did send feedback and the google search for Twilight Sparkle is very clean. This does make a difference!

I personally think that, any pornographic image should just be tagged, so it only shows up if that's what is being searched for. These engines can do such a thing, and prevent these images from showing up on normal searches. The biggest problem is, they don't because they get revenue from it. They need to realize, they wouldn't loose too much, tagging them so they only show up when searched for specifically.

Of course, there's also a multitude of programs that can block those out, but they seem to not be as well known anymore.

Quite a few of the incriminating photos I've found come from deviantart and legitimate sites, and given the sheer number of pictures made by the fandom, it's still perfectly applicable to apply filters and be mindful of children on general searches. Filtering NSFW content has improved since the inception of the Internet (Back in 2000 it was a lot worse), and there's always work to be done. Tags are helpful if the artist applies it correctly.

This is a wonderful thing. I don't personally let my kids online without very strict boundaries, but I know plenty of people do. These things popping up are not something kids need to see and only give anti-bronies fuel. You can bet I'll lend a hoof.
