Rainbow dash is my favorite, I like her design the most and her being a tomboy without being a stereotype is a great trait, I also like Pegasi a lot so that helps.

Along with Celestia being best secondary character. You just gotta love those motherly characters, even if we don't see her as much.

1.)Everyone should know this I hope She's happy, joyful and caring things I love and admire about her. I relate & understand her the best too.

 

2.) AppleJack- the most underrated character both honest and hard working. High respects to AJ for that. 

 

3.)Rainbow Dash- She actually went up from being my least favorite to here for one specific reason. She is loyal and perseveres through anything. Very likable aspects from her.

 

4.)Twilight Sparkle

 

5.)Rarity

 

6.)Fluttershy- I don't dislike but reminds me of myself when I was younger... make sure you stand up for yourself and don't rely on others to do that for you.

Honestly this main thread should be reset every year. Backlog of votes makes things not exactly representative of the current fandom.

If this poll was done now, Id bet you that there's a 90% chance that A. Twilight would be a lot higher, B. Dash significantly lower C. much bigger gap between Rarity and Applejack.

It's been a long time since I looked at this thread, so I decided to change my vote slightly. Still a Twilight Sparkle fan, she's my favorite mane 6, just because I feel like I could probably spend forever just talking with her about the universe. (I'd be endlessly fascinated by magic if it were real too, so I'd be just as enthralled in her books as she is.)

 

For side characters, I chose Princess Luna, and Celestia. Those two, to me, have the best story, and pretty well sold me on the show from day 1. Their tale only grew more amazing as I went along, seeing both canon and fan made tellings of their unfortunate mishap, and their beautiful reunion, brought about by... yes, my favorite mane 6 pony. I do love all the mane 6, and I see them all as being just as important, regardless of which one I relate to best.

 

Background characters, I chose Octavia and Vinyl, for my adoration of music, both modern and classical. They are the fusion of the two that makes me realize just how amazing sound can be when you experiment with different ideas and styles. Now if there was a metalhead pony, I'd be voting for them too, but I have yet to see one in the show. xD

I saw and posted in that thread, only got like 20 votes in total I think, really not a big enough sample. Not being a sticky it died too fast. I was amused at how big a flip Rarity got from the "initial best" to "current best" though.

It made alot of sense to me IMO, rarity's one of those ponies who you don't get a good first impression from due to how badly her "stereotype" is played out in normal media (Normally the fashion character is the bitch character, so you have to see a few episodes before you can "unlearn" that fact from normal TV)

 

Plus, Rarity's got probably the highest median of high quality episodes; most of the others have some real lows to go with their highs, which rarity's managed to avoid for the most part

Haha, yeah and she really didn't get to do much till the second half of S1. Some people are still never to get over that bias and basically judge everything she does in the harshest way possible. Im actually pretty sure that inheirent bias is the main reason she's traditionally languished in popularity polls despite having a great record of episodes from really early on. That and her being harder to relate to for a lot of people, and not just in regard to the fashion stuff.

And yeah I don't think it's very disputable that Rarity has the most consistently high quality episodes, I think even a lot of people who don't have her in their top 3 could admit that. I mean to pick out a Rarity episode I and seemingly plenty of other people consider fairly weak, lets  go with Simple Ways, that episode still has it's fair share of fans and scenes that are considered to be really hilarious by most everyone. Compare that to something like Mare-Do-Well, or Breezies or Rainbow Falls that are by and large just utterly hated. Or something like Baby Cakes that no one even remembers.

You can have an episode that's very poor, but if it were to have a massive DBZ fight in it, bronies would overwhelmingly declare the episode godly. (As an example, I hold up friendship games. When it comes to the sports plot or the shadowbolts as characters, most people tend to agree they are pretty poor if not outright bad. But the fact that the movie had one of the biggest DBZ moments yet cements it as being absolutely beloved by many, for that reason alone)

 

So, you have Rainbow do a sonic rainboom in the early part of the show, you have that sonic rainboom ability shown to be INCREDIBLY important (Being the reason for them all getting their cutie marks), and bam, instant popularity. This is the mane reason for Dash's S1 Massive popularity.

Welll, Dash was already really quite popular before Sonic Rainboom, pretty sure her and Flutters were already the tops. Eh I liked Sonic Rainboom Plenty but for me it was always overshadowed by Suited For Success and Party of One, which were bot significantly better character spotlights and actually had the character being spotlighted learn the lesson in the end. Those other 2 episodes told you a lot more about the characters beings spotlighted as well. Hell Id be hard pressed to find an episode in the entire run of the show that demonstrates so many things about a character to the audience as Suited for Success does for Rarity who really had not gotten much at all at that point.

 

But yeah iv noticed that tendency, it's pretty much the main reason why Twilight's Kingdom and A Canterlot Wedding being as popular as they are (well that and the songs), when both are significantly more flawed than say Return of Harmony or the Cutie Map (especially, even though it IS very fun to watch, Canterlot Wedding). As for me, I pretty much generally prefer slice of life stuff, I think characterization can shine through a lot more there. Though I admit I kinda want a big Rarity/Fluttershy action adventure episode. Just cause they are the ponies I think most people least expect for that kind of story.

 

 

Also the ending of Friendship Games was much more Magical Girl than DBZ, think more Sailor Moon and stuff like that, even had magical girl transformation sequences.
