How old do you have to be to become a brony?

I guess I should clarify a bit more... I do believe there are some koalafications (yes I just went there) for being a brony. I think you have to at least watch a couple episodes of the show and enjoy them. But really, that's the only thing I can think of.

Brony = (IMHO) A Male Fan Of The Show! (or a female fan who doesn't like the term pegasister, and so snatches the name for herself. Like me. xD)

Other then that, I don't think there's an age cut-off. Obviously, the term was used for older males, but I don't think it should be specific to older male fans of the show. :3

Age is just a number. Maturity is what counts. A 7 year old could be more mature than a guy in his 30's. And quite frankly, I am shocked at some of the answers in this thread. If a kid wants to be a Brony, isn't that a good thing?

What are we gonna do anyway? Kick him out? My point is, there shouldn't be a cut-off for being a Brony. Besides, parents should know the dangers of the internet and keep their kids off until they're 13.

You said exactly what I was going to. Last week, an 11 year old friend of mine asked if he could be a brony. I told him yes. His not so mature friend asked and I said no. I wasn't really sure why until now, but it's definitely maturity

If you want to stop being a brony one day that's your choice. If you hit a certain age and suddenly think it's odd or wrong that you're still a brony that's your choice. The age cut-off as you put it doesn't exist, it's created on the spot by an individual who believes he or she is too old to be watching a cartoon.

I'm telling you all right now, most of you will be scared off from the fandom when you hit a certain age. Maybe your family will bug you about liking this cartoon and eventually you'll stop watching it, or your significant other will tell you that they don't like that you're a brony and you'll quit being one to please them, or maybe you'll be afraid of what people in your age group will think of you for watching ponies so you'll quit to avoid embarrassment.

As for me I won't be quitting. I'm a 21 year old brony and despite what society might think I don't think there's anything wrong with me. MLP has become part of me because it's done so much good for my life. Even when I'm old sitting in a rocking chair ponies will still be in my heart. If you don't like that well that's too bad.

Well yes, as many of you said, ages 0-15 are a bit young to be concitered "bronies" because of the fact of maturity, i would not find it odd to see a 15 year old male/female child to be watching cartoons (Including MLP). The name Brony was adopted (Kill me if I am incorrect) because we are older 16-INFINTE and watching Mlp a show (Targeted twords little girls ages (0-15 respectivly)) and were ridiculed for such. I do find a lack of content when it comes to the younger posters, (granted i spend most of my time in life advice) but, I would not go as far as to say NO you cannot BE a brony becuase you are too young! it is simply the ridicule that comes with it and as you mature things change but when a person ages to the years of 20 something they usually have become who they are going to be. So It is best to adopt this title later in the life span.

Look guys, this isn't a blatant attempt at ageism, I'm not suggesting we change the age limit for the forum or brony inclusion, I'm just saying by and large those under the 15-16 range are less mature that's just a fact, and like I said, there are exceptions, If anything I'd judge "brony value" on a case by case basis.

I believe that maturity is not measured by the shows you watch. Frankly, when I matured, I did so by not stopping what TV shows I like to watch. (I'm 14 yrs old this Thursday) 1. He accepts criticism... snip

I'm 41 and I still don't meet all of the indicators of "maturity" indicators given in that list.  I meet most of them, but I guess I still have some growing up to do.  ph34r.png

Well said.  I'll still be watching cartoons when I reach rocking chair age myself.

In my opinion, anybody who wishes to identify themselves as a Brony are welcome to do so, including children in the target demographic range.  Hasbro, Neilsen ratings, and other organizations and people wouldn't accept this, but this is a free country and they have the right to adhere to their strict definition of what is and isn't a Brony.

41? HAH! Got you by 2 years! cool.png

Oh wait-maturity? O.k...

Since when has age had anything to do with maturity? If you can look at someone's age and judge their fitness to be part of a fandom, I'd say you're deluded.

Kids want to feel part of something. Lots of things are changing in their lives-why wouldn't they be attracted to a fandom which emphasises unconditional friendship, tolerance and support to it's members?

I say, 'whosoever will, let him come' (actually, that was Jesus, but you get my point).

I think anyone can be a brony, girl or boy, and I don't think there is age limit personally, my little sister I consider to be a brony though she is only 8. I also know a boy who is 10 and I think of him as a brony, so there is no limit in my opinion!

I guess, as well as what's been posted up 'till now, it would depend on your definition of what a 'brony' is.

If the only qualification is to be a fan of the show, I guess anyone and everyone is included. If, however it depends on involvement in the fandom on boards like this, or attending conventions, roleplay etc, that's going to practically exclude a bunch of people, as kids are completely dependent in most cases-and their parents will be deciding on their internet use and convention attending habits.

Who cares really? I don't care one way or the other-I like the show, and the interactions I have here. I'm not going to any conventions and I'm not dressing up. I don't care in the slightest if you do, it's just not my thing. If that doesn't make me a brony in your opinion, that's fine-as I don't live in your opinion. Hopefully, everyone else will come to the same conclusion, and we can enjoy each other's company instead of deciding who belongs and who doesn't.

So far the societal "dictionary definition" of a brony is an ADULT fan of My Little Pony.  Not just males, but Females as well...technically, any ADULT who is a fan of MLP, even of earlier generations, is a brony.  So if you are under 18, you ain't an adult....

Personally, I pretty much agree with this, minus any generation that isn't FIM, and being "legal" shouldn't determine this. I mean, if you can you drive, have a stable job, and are taking steps to determine your entire future (i.e. looking at careers, colleges, etc) then you are an adult in my book.  Anyone who falls into this, is a brony in my book.

In my opinion, kids around 5-10 are allowed to watch the show. But i think that there should be a line from watching the show, to participating in the fan-dom. Kids under aged are allowed too, they just need to be mature. I myself is 13 and i feel a little too young to acually be here, but i still feel welcome since i´m mature. Being mature is the key to joining a good society, and making on and building one.

(But in all seriousness, I can definitely say from personal experience that watching ponies is not considered normal even for 13 year old girls, which goes to show that the public perception of the intended audience is more like 5-8)

Yeah, girls are really judgmental. When when I was 10, and my friends found out I liked the Powerpuff girls, they said that I was weird for watching it because it was for 'babies'.

So I can tell you from past experience that a lot of girls find it weird for anyone over the age of 11 or 12 to be watching any cartoon, let alone mlp.

I would *personally* consider Bronies to be maybe high school age and up, but that's just me.  I'm not going to stop someone from calling themselves a brony if they're younger than that.

But I think more important than age is level of interest in the show. To me there's a certain level of investment in the show necessary beyond just catching it when it comes on TV.  I don't know if  I could really define it, but I think a Brony needs to have *some* kind of involvement in the fandom itself, even if it's just talking to other bronies.

In MY OPINION a 7-year-old is in the "target audience", so that's not really a brony. I think you should have to be like 12-13 and have seen the show to be a brony. You can't just discover the fandom and not watch MLP and be all like "I'm a bronyimg-1379355-5-xtWXQl1.png". Well you CAN, but you shouldn't

To me, a brony is a person who is a fan of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic for the show itself, as well as its fandom, regardless of age.

My journey in the fandom started on April 5, 2012. I joined here on April 24, 2012. Where that journey is headed now, who knows...

  • 4 months later...

I'm glad I found this thread and so many don't seem to care how old a person is if they're a Brony. I for one want to remain in the fandom for a very long time... I mean I have a family here, and I wouldn't want to say goodbye to you guys...I guess it just bothers me when I see people saying that Bronies are with the age group of 13-30..like if you're over that..then you're creepy or there is something wrong with you...I know these are mostly "averages" but still I wouldn't mind seeing a + or something next to that 30...but I guess its just me.

Here is a question.

Do you consider yourself a Brony?

If you answered yes then you are a Brony. It doesn't matter about age or anything else. We accept everyone so there should not be an age cut-off limit. No matter what age you are I will accept you as part of the brony community and I am sure many other bronies will too.
