  1. My life is worse off for having seen it.
  2. There was a lot of really fun stuff in this episode. Big Mac continues to prove he’s the best brother and Apple ever. Applejack has a really realistic and relatable reason for how she’s acting, but she still is able to put it aside to have fun with her sister. Nice flashback to see the whole family together. But... this is the episode that’s convinced me I have to change how I’m viewing this season if I’m going to have any chance to enjoy it. I went into this season expecting the writers to pull out all the stops, to really try and wow us with every episode, to try and wrap up every story arc and to make every moment special. We’re ten episodes in, and none of that has happened. Even the premiere that looked like it was going to set up huge changes hasn’t changed anything. Oh no! Sombra killed the Tree of Harmony... or not? Maybe? I can’t actually tell, really. Twilight is going to take the princesses place! But later, you know, when she’s ready. Whatever that means for the character. Every season has its big moments, and I’m sure this one will have them too. But it’s pretty clear this isn’t going to be a super special season, it’s just going to be like every other one. And yeah, that’s not exactly a bad thing, I just have to change how I look at it going forward.
  3. This looks like it’s been copied word for word from one of Lily Peet’s regurgitations. I don’t understand how you can expect everyone to be “respectful” of this when it’s written with zero respect for anyone who holds even a slightly different opinion.
  4. Oh my god... Thats what’s left of mean Twilight from The Mean Six. That’s the best callback the show has ever done.
  5. Lol, it’s guaranteed to disappoint someone, that’s for certain.
  6. The RM7 haven’t had a moment to do that, to take a bigger role in the running of Equestria. There hasn’t been an episode or subplot dedicated to the running of Equestria that they just haven’t had a role in for no explained or acceptable reason. You’re completely missing the point of my problem, which isn’t that Starlight hasn’t had an episode completely outlining her new role. Starlight has had several missed moments to take a bigger role in the school and to build relationships with the students. She wasn’t there in Uprooted, and she wasn’t there for this episode either. If the writers were serious about Starlights future role, they would have had her plan the ball instead of Twilight. The difference between running someone else’s school the way they would want it, and running your own school according to your own plans and ideas is so fundamentally different, they can not honestly be compared to each other. Running a school by her own merits and abilities (Running activities like the spellvenger hunt, choosing permanent teacher, managing a curriculum) is not something Starlight has any experience doing. You are confusing narrative purpose with meta purpose. Sure, there was a meta reason that Starlight should have been included more in Season Six. But there was never a narrative slot that they should have fit her into but didn’t. For example, it’s not like she has a love of sports that would have made her a great fit for Buckball Season. The only real reason they would have had to put her on the team is that she’s a unicorn, which isn’t all that compelling of a narrative reason. With Starlight being picked to take control of the school, there’s a huge narrative need to make her significantly more involved in the running of a school that she’s going to be left alone to handle completely on her own.
  7. Except there were places in Season Six that Starlight could have been included but wasn’t. That is entirely different from this, a place that Starlight should have been included, but wasn’t. Starlight should have been present at a school run event that she’s a staff member of. And you might have had a point about her arc being completed at the end of season eight, or hell, even season seven. At the end 9f season seven, her goal was to be a good friend and student. She proved herself in that role, and proved it was something she was happy with, even good at. She proved that she was good counselor in season eight, and it was clear that she enjoyed it. But now that they’ve introduced an entirely new goal for her character, headmare. And since they’ve introduced it, they’ve done nothing of value to prove that she ready for it, preparing for it, or even just is happy to have the job. Every other character has a clear, not just chosen, but developed ending to their character. Twilight’s a teacher and a princess, Spike’s her assistant, Rainbow’s a Wonderbolt, Rarity's a fashion designer, etc, etc, etc. Starlight’s role as a headmare has had no development this season. The students don’t bring their problems to her, she’s missing from important events, and the only episode we know she’s getting is about her job as a counselor, not headmare. If they wanted to leave her as just a Guidance councilor, they were in a pretty good spot to do so. By introducing a new end for her character, they put it upon themselves to make that end satisfying, and they have done nothing so far to prove they will.
  8. Alright we have officially passed season six and reached absurd levels of Starlight sidelining here. The first two appearances she had this season, the writers use the school, (which has no teachers, and probably no students since it wasn’t in session) as a means to write Starlight out of the narrative. And now, now that the school is in full session, with all the teachers and students, and a big school run event that everyone else has attended, she doesn’t even make a background appearance. What the actual fuck is going on with Starlight and the school? The writers are the ones who want us to believe that Starlight taking over the school after Twilight is a good ending to her story, that it’s where she belongs. Yet at every turn the only way they use her role with the school so far is to keep her away from the real story. And then, when the school, and everyone else who works or attends there is present, she’s completely missing. The writers need to sell the ideas they present, they can’t just introduce them and then do nothing with them. There’s no excuse for her to have not appeared in this episode in any from.
  9. I like them just fine, but I think they were introduced far too late in the shows life. There just isn’t enough screen time to develop them anywhere close to our other main characters (Main Six, Spike, Starlight, CMC’s), but the attempt to do so is taking time away from characters that I think still have lots that can be done with them. Without giving any direct spoilers, the synopsis for future episodes seems to suggest that we are getting an individual episode for each of the students to pair up with one of the Main Six, maybe as a way to “pass the torch.” If that’s the case, it mean a solid 25% of the season is dedicated just to this concept, making up the seasonal arc, and that doesn’t even include episodes featuring the students as a group, like Uprooted. If this wasn’t the final season, and there was the promise of future episodes, this wouldn’t even bother me. But the limited time left means the students are never going to be developed to my liking. And instead of using the little time left to work on characters I care more for and wrapping up all the loose ends of their arcs, all these episodes are being used to try and accomplish a goal I don’t think can even be satisfactorily met. But despite this long winded negative rant... yeah, I do like them. I’m actually really looking forward to next weeks episode too. I just wish the show had more time.
  10. I think it’s going really well. I’m not a big fan of all the attention the students are getting, but that doesn’t really detract from the seasons quality, so... yeah, it’s good so far.
  11. I mean... maybe? Out of the non-student main cast, she’s still the one with the most unresolved questions. I want to wait and see what happens this season, but with the extreme emphasis the first half of the season seems to be putting on the students over Starlight and the CMC’s, I’m not very confident they even care about anyone’s stories outside the students and the main six anymore.
  12. You’re confusing opinions with criticism, by associating Critics with criticism exclusively. Critics can be critical and give criticism, but I believe most of them would admit that most of what they have to offer on an art form is just their opinion on the matter. That doesn’t mean objective criticism isn’t real just because most critics rely on opinions to arrive at a conclusion. The example of Newbie Dash is a good one. There are lots of reasons that can be given for why someone might not like the episode, but is there anything about the episode that would make it badly written? Well, there’s no plot holes or contrivances that exist to keep the story moving. No one’s acting out of character to create the issue. There’s no lore ignorance or retcons to fit the story. From a critical aspect, Newbie Dash is a story that works within the setting and doesn’t break any established facts. There is no such thing as a valid or invalid opinion. There is absolutely a valid or invalid criticism, and that’s because a criticism is an argument backed up with facts that arrives at a conclusion. But that conclusion can be wrong, it can gets facts incorrect, it can ignore or be ignorant of story elements that weaken or disprove their conclusion. It can even be an opinion masquerading as a fact based argument. The biggest problem with this entire debate of “valid or invalid” is that people have trouble differentiating facts from opinions, and the subjective nature of art doesn’t do them any favors.
  13. The one, great big, inescapable problem I have with Twilight ruling Equestria is also so simple it’s egregious it wasn’t even remotely addressed. Does Twilight want to rule Equestria? Now obviously there’s tons of reasons why Twilight might be forced into taking the princesses’ place. Luna and Celestia could die, or get sick, or banished/frozen/incapacitated, and it would be up to Twilight to do the right thing and step into their shoes for the good of Equestria. But... that’s not what’s happening, they’re just retiring, and are pushing Twilight into their roles without even a discussion on if it’s what she wants, not what she’s capable of.
  14. There’s a couple problems with your argument, the first is comparing Starlight, a character who has received constant, direct focus multiple times each season for the last three years (which creates a very good argument for her main character status) to characters that have only ever been used in a supporting role, and scarcely at that. Your argument would have made more sense with the CMC’s being absent and... yeah, they should have had an appearance her as well. The second problem is that I’m not saying Starlight should have had a major role, I’m saying the reason they gave for her not having a role is dumb. Starlight not being able to help because she needs to watch over an empty school is dumb. Even so, I do feel I should point out that they managed to add Starlight in both Horse Play and The Mean Six in a way that added her to the group without detracting from the episodes time or flow. I refuse to just accept they couldn’t have done the same here just because it would have been more work. They chose not to, and it’s totally their right to do so.
  15. You mean the school that apparently the teachers also left for the day? If there’s no teachers to run the classes, why does Starlight need to be left out as well? This is the second time now this season the school has been used as a way to get rid of her, and both times they haven’t made any sense. At least she was actually in the episode.
  16. I really hope Starlight has a role here. I know it’s all about the main six and Spike, but it’ll still sting not to have her in the 200th episode.
  17. What if Grogar is the one who created Discord? In the premiere, they referred to Grogar as the “father of monsters.” What if one of his creations was Discord, a living embodiment of chaos?
  18. She was with the rest of the cmc at the front of Sombra’s army attacking Canterlot. So, just a background appearance. Yeah, I was surprised by that. It was weird having Rainbow call out Starlight and Spike instead of Scoot.
  19. So, instead of an amazing and badass fight between Sombra and Starlight (with Spike for the assist maybe), we get an entirely pointless fight between the main six and background ponies... sigh. Yeah, that’s about what I expected. Still, other than that disappointment, really good premier. The trailers made it look like the student six were going to be involved as well, though, but it looks like that’s being saved for later in the season. Probably a good thing, considering how cluttered and rushed the premier was regardless. 9/10, probably my second favorite premiere.
  20. No, I think it is ending prematurely. There just so many characters, and story ideas left to discover, I don’t see how they can possibly address them all in only 26 episodes. I know that the show is going to end with at least some unanswered questions, and that doesn’t make me happy.
  21. I guess out of those star rating i’d give her an eight. I don’t really understand hating the character.
  22. Three episodes for Starlight? 1. She has an episode with her old villagers. 2. We see her mother, and get and explanation about her. 3. Starlight’s Cutie mark story, although that could take place anywhere.
  23. There were Sombra’s dark crystals all over that trailer, so unless you have a convincing reason Chrysalis would be able to use them, I’ll stick with Occam’s Razor and believe it’s really him.
  24. Why do you care? What does it matter if they’re male or female?
