Recommended Posts

I put myself forward as moderator on the grounds that I have several years experience in the role. I have moderated several Facebook, reddit, and google+ groups, along with 2 forums on the behalf of my YouTube network.

Not to put too fine a point on it but you're not going to find someone else with this much experience. You can contact me via PM.

Some of the time, sites like to recruit people with some ground of experience on forums. But seeing that you guys not minding non experienced users really out shines the others. You guys are willing to see if this person can make a difference or even have a better style of moderating from past users.

As SCS said, experience doesn't make the best candidate right off the bat. Whilst someone may have experience moderating a forum, they don't have experience moderating MLPF. Experience is always a plus, but its not the defining factor.

If someone has the skill set and personality we're looking for, then they deserve a chance at coming aboard and becoming a productive member of the staff team.

What I meant was that you guys choose people who look like they could handle many situations on this forum with how they behaved in the past and all that stuff. If it sounded like I only meant that you guy's go for experienced users only, sorry. I didn't mean it to sound like that. What I was to say was that you guys do the normal thing that other forums don't follow: Capabilities over relationships.

Every site I went through always put thier closest friends before the people who actually might have real potential into moderator positions, regardless if they are any use for the better good or will do thier job properly.

Imagine if you will being on your death bed – And standing around your bed – the ghosts of the ideas, the dreams, the abilities, the talents given to you by life.

And that you for whatever reason, you never acted on those ideas, you never pursued that dream, you never used those talents, we never saw your leadership, you never used your voice, you never wrote that book.

And there they are standing around your bed looking at you with large angry eyes saying "We came to you, and only you could have given us life! But now. We must die with you FOREVER!

The question is – if you die today, what ideas, what dreams, what abilities, what talents, what gifts, would die with you?

I'm currently obviously not qualified for the job. Maybe in 5-10 years or so...

I still express interest in moderating at some point, and wish to aid the community at some time in some way.

Well, I went ahead and submitted an application. I highly doubt that I will be picked, though, but, hey, if they do pick me, I'll will attempt to do my best.

You could also perhaps submit an application, like they asked? :P

Is this everyone competing for a moderator place or are there multiple moderator places?

There are currently more than one moderation positions open. Even if we end up filling all current openings, other applications will still be saved so we can turn to them at any point in the future when we need new moderators.

Oh yes, you have no idea how must that pisses me off.  The "popularity" selection type of thing.  Once I see that, I know there reliability is down the drain.  In addition, when that occurs, 85% of the time, they will ABUSE there power, and when members report it, someone will come back and say, "oh, don't worry.  He's just trying to make the community better".  I for one, from my past experience, look for certain individuals b/c I go for those who are experienced  However, with misc. I choose ones who are "willing" to accept the responsibility and enjoy there position, b/c if they don't, that's a problem :D.

Not a fan of the whole patronage thing either, I have seen it go horribly far too many times with it encouraging a culture of cronyism. Very pleased this place dosen't work that way.

Since we're treating this like a job application, I want to know what a person will be expected to do if they are hired for the position.

  • What role(s) will we be expected to accomplish if we are hired?
  • How much time shall we be expected to dedicate towards the work?
  • What exactly are the do-s and don't-s of the position?
  • How much past experience does the employer prefer?
  • Does the position come with 401(k) and health benefits?

Nothing wrong with knowing the facts before submitting something. :smug:

So is everyone who participate in the application going to receive the message if they got the spot or not or are you just limiting it t just this thread?

That's well said there, SCS. Some of the time, sites like to recruit people with some ground of experience on forums. The big issue with requiring prior experience to get a particular position is that it perpetuates a chicken-and-egg problem. If everyone who can give you experience wants you to already have some, how do you get a foot in the door?

If you have relevant experience, it's certainly good for us to know about - the "other comments" field in the application form is the perfect place to list it - but it's not a "weeding signal" if you don't have it. Even an inexperienced volunteer can be an excellent teammate if they're a cultural fit with an organization.

i am about to change my display name, will that effect my profile URL?

Your old profile URL's will continue to work if you change your display name - that's what the ID number in it is for. :)

If you're interested in a moderator position, please submit an application through the form. As I mentioned above, the form's "other comments" question is an excellent place to detail your prior experience. :)
