Who hates the word "overrated"?

Pretty self explanatory. I hate the word "overrated" with a burning passion. I just find it to be an overused word. A lot of people use overrated just because they personally dislike a franchise or something. Using the word overrated not only makes you feel negative but using it especially with a popular franchise will cause flame wars. For example I don't like Minecraft at all but I don't think it's overrated, it's just not for me and not my taste. I mean everyone has different tastes and calling something you don't like overrated just really bothers me.

And I also hate threads with the word overrated in it like "Most Overrated Villains", or "Most Overrated Video Games". I find that they not only hurt others feelings but they make you feel negative if you call something overrated.

So what do you think about the word "overrated"?

Eh, it's opinion. Should we make this the most hated word thread?

Answering the question, overrated is a term where people rate things highly, but for others, it doesn't meet expectations. To be honest I'm rather indifferent. It's not that gut wrenching.

For me, the really annoying word used on the internet right now is "Epic," because cat videos and Lord of the Rings should not have the same description via the word "EPIC."

So you are saying you find the word overrated, overrated?

And as for my opinion on the word, I do not hate it as it works well as a layman's term for something that is given undue praise and is highly touted when it should not be. It works well as a fairly common simple descriptor but there are better words to use.

I dislike the wretched term that analysts popularized amongst the fandom, and turned every brony and their grandmothers into pro analyzers: out of character.

Ugh. Just typing it makes my teeth itch.

I agree with the dishonest one ... there are better words to use, and it is said in such a way that it is basically a colloquialism now. However, it's not a word that gets my blood boiling.

Now ... moist ... *shudders*

I do agree that the the word "overrated" gets used too often by people who do not understand its exact meaning. Anytime someone doesn't necessarily like something that the general population likes, they just claim it to be overrated. Is it usually something that gets more praise than is deserved? No. They just don't want to like what everyone else likes. Well, in most cases, anyway.

Anyway, I think the biggest misconception is that people think "overrated" means the overall opinion regarding something such as a game, or a TV show, or a character of some sort.

For example, I know most people claim Rainbow Dash is overrated since she is usually everyone's first favorite pony, but then their opinion changes and they find another character to be their favorite. So then they say she's overrated because everyone else lists her as their favorite. When really, saying she is overrated means that she gets more praise than what is deserved, which then means that you can't call her overrated because you don't decide how many people can like her.

So basically, I don't hate the word, but it just really bothers me when people don't use it properly.

So stay in school, kids! Learn your vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, and grammar! It could really save your life someday!

When someone says the word overrated to me...
The only word I can use to describe it is closing. It sounds like you've never given that thing a chance, and that you only hate it because everyone likes it. It's the primary reason I don't like the word, secondary being that sometimes people just say it to sound anti-meta. That's really obnoxious.

Thanks. What I really hate is that it's a word that is often used improperly. People often use that word because they simply don't like something.

I don't really care for the word in all honesty.

It really does depend on the context though. Overrated. Well, it is an actual word in the english dictionary and so I don't exactly harbour any bad thoughts about it.  I take its meaning for what it is.  It's just a word to me.

I'm not a big fan of the word either... I do agree that it's used way too often. Saying that something doesn't deserve the praise it gets is a matter of opinion, but it does bug me when people say something is "overrated" and their only reason is because it's popular.

If anyone says to me "blah blah is overrated" I just flat out say "why'd you think that?" Most of the time they can't give me a concrete answer.

At the end of the day the only people who use this word in an annoying way are kids who think they're edgy and hate anything that they deem "mainstream"

I don't mind people using the word, just as long as they explain, why they think something's overrated. Though I feel people sometimes think overrated instantly means hate. You can still like something but find it overrated. For example, well I liked Frozen, I find that people glorify this movie like it's the Citizen Kane of movies.

The word "overrated" is overrated because using the word "overrated" to describe something tends to make that thing overrated and thus then becoming unofficially "overrated",however, this is just my opinion -- which may or may not be deemed overrated.  :maud:

I don't understand what is so wrong with the word.  If I find the value of some media to be less than what has been indicated by popular conception, than I would consider that media to be overrated.  This is a situation which occurs quite frequently.  And while many have requested different words be used in place of overrated, I have yet to see a single post suggest a suitable replacement.

ME, ME, A THOUSAND ****ING TIMES, ME!

Wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the fact that it's almost always said by people who think their opinion is fact and do everything in their power to express as much hostility and fan-hatred in a single post as physically possible.

Opinions aside.

When something gets more hype than necessary, we need to say that it's overrated.

I mean, isn't Justin Bieber overrated?

So no, I don't hate it. At least people that use it should give a reason why they're using it.

When something is overrated, it means it doesn't deserve as much praise as it gets, which is an opinion.

I do think that people use the word too liberally. Just because I don't like something as much as most people, doesn't mean that I think it's overrated.

I dislike the frequency with which I encounter "overrated" and, oftentimes, the intentions that accompany its usage.  It strikes me as a rather lazy, often purposely inflammatory, and borrowed term.  The English - or whatever - language is tremendously malleable.  You can DO so many things with it; you don't have to constantly fall back on buzz words.  Also, whether or not something is of worth or quality is almost WHOLLY subjective.  But saying something is overrated does two things: 1. expresses a relatively low opinion regarding the quality of something and 2. serves to diminish the opinions of others regarding that something.  Actually, it does a third thing as well: 3. contains the presumption that the user somehow for certain knows how the majority view something.  One might even interpret it as arrogant to proclaim the opinions of who-knows-how-many-others invalid simply because you don't see the worth of something.

Hence, "overrated" is a poor word.  For which there doubtless exist communicative substitutes that most people simply ignore because reasons.  I don't know.  Self-expression is fast becoming a practice of select regurgitation.

The end lol.
