I liked the idea one of the Brony Analysis crew put out that Starswhirl is actually Discord at this point.
That he got so caught up in magic, though without friendship?,  that it messed him up and made him into that.

I still think it woulda been cool to have seen Starswhirl have been in Starlight Glimmer's place in the S5 arch n' all.

Well I do have a theory about my OC being Starswirl in the beginning to train his creations and get them started. When he knew that they were reddy he disappeared from equestria and returned to his underground lab deep under equestria to continue to watch over his creations. BTW my OC is Techno Universal.

While it was never stated, the Journal of the Two Sisters not only implied that he might be alive in the present, either by stop his aging or his time travels, but he also knows about Twi.

The only reason I don't think this would get explained in the show is because the writers don't seem to either be able to or want to explain death in the series.

It's understandable, cause it's for kids, but the fact that the alicorns have been around for millennia, and Starswhirl for god only knows how long, as well as that one archeologist pony, as well as the Apple family's parents, all begs them to do so.

Closest that was presented was the episode about the pheonix, I think.

Would be really neat to seem them actually delve into such a topic in earnest.

I don't think Star Swirl is exactly alive, but if Twilight could communicate with him, she would fangirl all over the place! Like if Twilight discovered his secrets, and Star Swirl tells her that secrets are secrets for a reason during a magical mental connection conversation, and he explains how to stop whatever she set in motion or something. That would be cool!

I remember reading a headcanon theory that Twilight is the reincarnated Starswirl, almost like the avatars of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.

I do remember 1 story over in Fimfiction  (ICR the name) where Trixie told Twilight she had uncovered evidence that Starswhirl had explored Dark Magic & became corrupted. I remember some lines "You've always dreamed of meeting Starswhirl.  You did.  You called him -Sombra"

It would be very interesting to see that become a reality. Considering how much of a presence he has had on the show's lore so far, seeing the guy(pony?, colt?, whatever you want to call him)in the flesh would be intriguing.

i've thought about this.
also that he is some crazy hermit living in some unnamed mountains, far away from anyone who ever knew him.
if Celestia and Luna is over thousand years old, then maybe Starswirl is too and still hides somewhere?
some headcanons, like he's actually Discord/reincarnated into Twily, isn't too far fetched either.
after all it's a show about magic, anything can happen.
