gaming "Too old" for video games?

Recommended Posts

There’s two problems with this line of thought.

The first problem is the assumption that video games in their ENTIRETY are all for children.

Some people fall under the impression that all games are basically family-friendly fun, like Mario. The reality is there are games that I would NEVER allow any child under my care to play, ever, nor should I. Some games are only for adults.

The second problem is the idea that the aforementioned “family-friendly fun” is only for children.

I find this to be a truly aggravating mindset. It’s the same kind of mindset that makes people sneer at adults that enjoy cartoons. “But you’re an adult, wouldn’t you rather watch, I dunno, Game of Thrones? No. No, I don’t. I experience the stark unpleasantness of realism every day just like everyone else. Why is the idea that I don’t want to fill my leisure time with grim, boldfaced death and sorrow such an alien concept?

TL;DR: No, you’re never “too old” to play video games. There are games for literally every age group, personality, and niche interest on Earth. I’ll still be playing video games when I’m old and in a retirement home.

You’re never too old for video games, no matter what anybody says.

age is not the case, it's time while your adult life is consuming it.

You know how people say you’re too old to watch saccharine horses but it’s not true as long as you’re having fun and not hurting anyone? Same logic applies here. People will always try to rain on your parade. The best way to deal is basically to shrug and stop caring what they think.

I fully agree with Tuna on this.  I go to work,  pay my bills, and what I do in my free time is mine and mine alone.  Have I been told to stop watching anime (and cartoons) watch the "grown up" shows,  well yes.    But I find them boring as hell , well minus a lot of history shows/docs I watch.  So I will watch and do what makes me happy!

Nope and who cares. You do you. Wife and myself play RPGs like Diablo and are looking forward to D4 and we're in our 40's. We also both like Hey Duggee, that's intended for an age group even younger than the ponies; 1) It's delightful 2) It has references for the adults (eg Apocalypse Now!)

And if it helps you get through life, why not.

One thing ive noticed from playing CS/R6S with people younger than myself is when situations occur that remind me of sketches/lines from old comedy shows that will go over the heads of the youngsters :)

I will be the one to say YES.

But for different reasons you'd expect. In short: I do not believe there is an upper age limit upon which you should cease playing altogether.

However, on my own example, over years the perceived end satisfaction has vastly diminished for me. 10 years ago I derived immense fun from playing certain games. Now, when my reflexes have dulled and skillset is starting to fail as well, I find it hard to convince myself that competitive games which were always my forte are just as fun as they used to be. Games started feeling like chores.

You CAN become too old for games, but it will not be the society that will tell you that, it will be yourself.

Of course not. If anyone is "too old" for video games then people can be "too old" for television, movies or music. But they would balk at such a notion. The concept of being too old for something is patently ridiculous. I'll be 36 this year and I will continue to play video games of all stripes. From those made more for a younger audience to those made specifically for an adult audience. I know many adults who are older than I who continue to play video games of some sort. There's no age limit on engagement and fun.

What in Equestria does age have to do with what you find entertaining, relaxing, or fun? Those that cry about a persons age when it comes to what they do for fun are just sad and most often have the creativity of a sea sponge. They are the same sort that sit mindlessly in front of a TV consuming trash like the View or watching sports they lack the fitness to take part in themselves.
If you have not guessed it by now I hold nothing but scorn and contempt for such views. So the answer is NEVER. You are NEVER too old to enjoy anything legal.

The answer would be the same for movies and music: never. You might go off a particular genre or style you use to enjoy, but I don’t think you’d ever be too old for, at least, some products.

Very well said. Nintendo knew that and made their games enjoyable at any age

Never. Just ask Shirley Curry, an 82 year old grandma who regularly posts videos of herself playing such games as Skyrim.

Age shouldn't dictate whether you should enjoy something or not. The prospect of being too old for something is beyond stupid.

At first I rejected the zero, but that was because I simply didn't understand it. Now I do.
