What is your opinion of the old generations?

Never seen them, don't really want to either. The general census seems to be that they suck though, and that's probably the reason they didn't gain as big of a following as FiM has.

The first generations before our current were the oblivion of MLP. Is it really entertaining to watch baby square-headed fillies squirming over couches and talking about what boys they liked?

I haven't tried it, and I don't think I want to. From what I have seen, I don't think I will like it. I will just stick with FiM.

 

I've never seen them, and i'm not really interested.

 

Besides, Friendship is Magic ponies are the only ponies for me.

I've tried watching some G3. I felt like vomiting. I've always held a particular disdain for the older generations because of that stupid annoying theme song in commercials. The commercials also made me gag. I don't want to watch them, and I probably never will. Only interested in G4.

Pretty much, Friendship is Magic took some elements from the previous generations, added better writing, animation, art style and voice acting. I feel like seeing more of the previous generation stuff than I have (Vaguely remember seeing minutes of previous generation stuff years ago, been a long time) will "taint" the current generation stuff for me.

G4 does take elements of G1, which Lauren Faust is a huge fan of. The first episode of FiM especially is an homage to the very first MLP G1 special, Escape from Midnight Castle. If you look at this picture here, you will see how G1 has inspired G4, only they needed to use names that Hasbro had the copyright to.

For the sake of curiosity I watched some of the previous generations. Here's my impression of each:

 

G1 - I don't much care for it. However, I will give it credit in that it at least tried to be interesting. It had some actually interesting antagonists and the setting, juvenile as it was, still made an effort to be somewhat original. This is where we got sea ponies, after all, and who doesn't like sea pony Lyra? Unfortunately, the ponies themselves are just flat and boring. They all blended together so much that I couldn't distinguish them if you put a gun to my face.

 

G2 - Opposite problem. They made a bit more effort to give the ponies individual personalities, but they did so in a backdrop that was basically modern America...only with ponies. Seeing them walk around on two legs and use some kind of magic muppet magnets in their hands to use telephones made me wonder why the show even needed to be about ponies at all. I guess they wanted kids to relate to it, but if that was their goal they aimed about five years too high.

 

G3 - Sweet baby JESUS what the hell happened? The past two generations were flawed but there were still a few things they did right. This, though....I cannot think of anything good to say about it. Every character has the same voice, the same personality, the same stupid dialogue. There was no thought put into this. None. There is no conflict, no stakes, and no reason for us to care about a single one of these characters. Terrible, terrible stuff.

I haven't actually watched any of the older stuff but after getting used to the ponies in FiM I can hardly stand to see their previous counterparts. Its not that they look that bad but I'm used to them looking amazing.

Also, what I think of the old generation ponies are ... Considering G1 was cheesy 80s cartoon mainly meant to promote a toy aimed at 4-7 year old girly girls I think it was done pretty well. They obviously didn't spend too much money on production but as I was at the target audience when I first watched the show I really loved it. And if that show never existed, I'd probably be a designer purse carrying, weave wearing, talon nailed, make-up clad, omging, "that's like, so weird" ing, but yet still imaginative (but slightly less imaginative) version of myself. MLP was one of the things that first got me writing and drawing as a kid.

 

I think my opinion is that G1 was good for what it was. A cheaply produced cartoon that had creators who probably weren't too passionate about it. Just passionate about making money.

 

The fact that someone who was inspired by and loved G1 for what it was, took the time to work on it, make it better, get other people who cared, found people with actual talent, and aimed for a quality show probably helped FIM become more popular than the previous gens and a better show than them too. FIM is the best of the previous gens mixed together with a face lift, lipo and some personality. There were good things about each gen. If there wasn't something good about them (yeah, I hate G3.5 but there were a few likeable things about them), there would have been no reason to make FIM.

 

FIM is good because the people behind it actually care.

At least in my opinion, if, you know... that's like okay with you, I mean that's what I think but, I might not be right, you know....

You'll have to get passed me first. My mom gave away all my old ponies and video tapes and books and I just got them all back on ebay. I will die before I surrender them!!!!!!! :angry:

 

The old toys weren't bad. I had fun playing with them. You young people with your fancy new ideas and technology probably wouldn't have had as much fun with them though. Although I don't remember much of it, the 80s rocked. And if you get rid of the old MLP you'll be getting rid of a part of me I'll have to resort to being a dumb normal person if that part of me is gone.

 

Yes the new is better, but the old is part of the new and the new would not exist without the old (even though we'd like to pretend that parts of the old did not exist... G3.5) but if you like G3.5 I'll gift wrap it for you with pleasure.
