My car: currently a 2006 Volkswagen GTI, complete with custom emblems (did them myself) and what I believe to be a bad turbo. It's in the shop now, and it could either end up fixed or sold depending on the cost of the repair. If I sell it, who knows what I'll drive next, but I will need a car.

Bud, those things are super fun to blast around in, do you have the DSG transmission I assume?  Why do you think you have a bad turbo?  What was the car doing?

Yes indeed, I do have the DSG. And don't get me wrong, I love driving the thing around. However, recently there's been a significant drop in power, especially under heavier than average acceleration, such as getting up to highway speeds at a normal rate (up to ~70 mph). On top of that, when I do accelerate like that, I pour out black smoke. And on top of that, I'm burning oil at an obscene rate. It's been to three different dealers, and now it's at an independent mechanic who will hopefully know what he's doing better than those who have worked on it previously. Something's gotta give here soon.

Despite being 19, I've only been able to drive for about a year and some change now, and even then I didn't have a car to drive until last October or November. Eventually, I did...

I inherited the family's 2001 Subaru Outback station wagon (estate for you non-murican weirdos). It has 260,000 miles on it, the very back right window is ductaped shut, and the 5th door sticks closed unless you close it just so. It was just relieved of its recent electrical problems, and had a hole drilled into the back left taillight to prevent water from shorting the light again. I didn't even know it was out, to be honest, but I did know that some of the glass/whatever those are made of was missing. It also makes a very loud, low humming noise whenever I turn right that isn't connected to the tires in any way.

It was bought brand new all those years ago, and now it will die in my hands. Or not. The little snot's stayed alive MUCH longer than any shit American car we've had. Here's some examples:

Dodge Dakota extended cab, 2001, bought in 2005 - 150k miles, extensive work, died in 2009. Mom got a replacement, almost identical, then that died this year.

Old Jeep, 1996, bought in 2006 - KIA 130k miles, 2010.

My mom also had a four door dodge dakota (brand new in 2000) die in around 2004.

There's a lesson to be learned here: Buy a japanese car, a VW, or a ford. Do NOT buy any other sort of american car, unless you want to buy another one in less than 5 years.

Okay dont laugh but i drive a 1998 Toyota Corrola. I know generic as all hell but it's great on Gas and was cheap. Before that i had a 2001 Chevy Tahoe from my dad but It crapped out because my dad would drive through states with it on business.  I bought a cheap car so i could get an awesome bike i have a 2012 Kawasaki Ninja 300 ABS My god what a rush it is. One day im going to own a Harley Davidson, But i need to be in a more secure point in my life financially. Also i live in Chicago so Having a bike is not the best option but ive always wanted one even as a kid. I want to move out to California or someplace always warm so i can ride my bike more frequently.

I drive one of these, its my baby, i swear every time i go down the street, the cars around me have to gun the engine and try to speed off (mostly camaros and mustangs) when im going the speedlimit, i mean come on guys, do you KNOW how hard it is to stay at 40 MPH with a V12?

Too bad you're not from my area, I have a VW guy that knows more about those cars than the engineers that built them.  A turbo wouldn't be a bad guess though, I'm surprised 3 dealers had difficulty identifying the problem.

Here's the thing, you pour out black smoke but the sensors in that car aren't going to throw in a ton of extra fuel unless it sees the airflow past the turbo, which would first lead me to believe that something has come loose or tore on the charge piping (your intake piping from the turbo to the engine).  What gets me is that you're burning oil at a high rate as well.  I would have to check into a few things.

But a lot of times, there is a tear in the charge piping which will cause the car to drive normal when the turbo isn't adding pressure to the engine, but as soon as it does add pressure it leaks all the air out from the rip (which on this car is air that the sensor has already accounted for) and you get not enough air into the engine and too much fuel, causing the black smoke and power loss.

Hopefully it goes well for you man and it's something simple.

Dodge and Jeep are both made by Chrysler, and is one of the poorer American vehicle manufacturers (although they do make a few cool things).  Chevy isn't too bad, Chevy knows how to make a damn good engine, although sometimes they do forget how to, most of them are good.  Thing I don't like about Chevy is I don't like how they design the rest of the cars/trucks, period.  Some people like it, I'm not a fan.  Other then that they're pretty decent (despite cheap interiors).  Ford is by far my favorite of the Americans, I will give you that, I'm bias though so we wont go into that.

Japanese cars?  Love em, without Mitsubishi in the mix I would say they're among the hardest to kill, longest lasting cars.  Plus there are some AWESOME cars out there ranging from the Toyota Supra all the way down to the Autozam AZ-1.

European, I have a love/hate relationship with.  Fantastic cars up until warranty runs out and you have to start buying replacement parts.  Parts are more expensive, labor is more expensive, and they can be a real bitch to work on.

Korean, I gotta hand it to them, quality has gone up significantly.  Still would never buy one, but they're getting much better.  Mostly talking Hyundai though.  Kia hasn't exactly taken the ball and run as far as them.

I currently drive an '05 Jeep Wrangler, silver with a hard top which feels like the clutch is going out on. My fun vehicle is my 2013 Kawasaki KLR dual sport motorcycle. I just got my MC license back in May of this year.  Looking forward to getting some MLP patches to stick on my leather jacket to go along side  my Ghost in the Shell and Squad 11 (Bleach) patches B)

It all makes sense now! My uncle also had hordes of issues with his dodge caravan until that finally got murdered - I don't know any specifics though.

Yeah, back when I was a small child (before 2000), my family owned a 1989 Subaru (I think it was an outback), bought brand new, that my dad traded his Camaro for (like, a 70s Camaro. I was heartbroken when my mom told me the story, just like I was heartbroken when my dad told me about how he wrecked his Chevelle, or when my mom told me about how her hearse got wrecked). We also had two Ford Escorts that we never had any problems with until we traded the white one in for the original dodge dakota and the silver one in for the "newer" Subaru. The old one is still sitting in the garage at the old house. It is the centerpiece of all the junk that's inside it.

If it were up to me, I would like to have a Subaru Impreza WRX (not sure what the STI's significance is)...or maybe just a newer legacy outback.

That sounds like an adequate explanation to me, especially given that I've heard similar opinions recently. As for the oil, I too am stumped. I just want the problems to be fixed!!

I have a license and drive. I currently own a 1999 Honda Accord Coupe. It has been an awesome car. It has almost 500,000 km on him, yes that's right, and all that has had to be changed on it is a new radiator ($450) in its whole 14 years of life. His name is Bob. I am hoping to purchase a 1992 Jeep Wrangler Sahara, just so I can do this to it. http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_images/3/1811/4361/29527180030_large.jpg

I don't own a car, and I don't have a licence, but I still drive.... my mother up the wall XD

Jokes aside, I don't have a license or a car, unless you count my dad's car.

It's an old Honda Accord British model, and it's dark blue. We've had it since I was about 3 years old. Since we got into an accident in 2010, the back lights and bumper have needed replacing, and since recently the top of the car got scraped against something, and caused the antenna to snap off.

Plus, the leather seats are cracked and weather-stained, and the AC is broken. And the power-steering fluid hose is damaged, and we tried to fix it, but we still have to double-check the fluid before we go anywhere just in case. And one day, the right back-door outer handle got damaged so we couldn't open it from the outside, only the inside. Until by accident, my mom put on the child-lock so now it's locked both ways. And many times we've had a minor German-cockraoch problem but we stopped that, sort of...

Otherwise, it's a fully-functional family car. We are supposed to be getting a new one soon though.

Nice ride. My parents 'get around car' is a Mercedes ML63 AMG.

Nice and fast, but ridiculously expensive for what it is. One of the worst expenses is its tires, $600 per tire, just for winters and at a wholesale price! AMG = Ach Mein Gott (Oh My God in German). Lol.

If you ever have a question about it don't be afraid to give me a holler.  I'm bored off my ass right now and I can probably tell you if a mechanic is blowing smoke up yours.   If you really wanted me to think about the oil issue I'd have to ask you a few more questions.

I just may here pretty soon. As I mentioned before, it's currently at an independent mechanic who specializes in European autos. I've heard very good things about the place, and he seemed like a pretty sharp guy on the phone. If I don't get any satisfactory results, I'll hit you up.

Eh, the WRX is a great car, the STI is the 'boy racer' version of the WRX.  It sports some upgraded parts, suspension drivetrain, 300hp engine.  If it were me, I would love a Subaru Legacy GT, they are super, super nice cars.

Actually to tell you the truth I'd probably get a Saab 9-2x Aero.  The Saab 9-2x Aero is actually a WRX wagon with minor tweaks, it has a little more charm to it and it's still a Subaru.  They only made them for 2 years and they have nicer options.  (You see this sometimes, two different car companies work together and use the exact same car and just change minor things like the bumpers, some of the interior, and leave the rest of the car completely alone)

But remember:

9-2x Aero = WRX

9-2x = Impreza

It must say Aero or you're getting the slower/non-turbo model; and who wants a Subaru without a hood scoop? :)

(The hood scoop typically indicates a turbo on a Subaru, and they left the hood scoop on the 9-2x Aero/WRX)

There is just one thing, I can't afford a car :C! Its so much money to be able to get insurance!

America or Europe?

In America there are lots of options for insurance and you can actually dig out a nice car for cheap if you know what to look for and where.

Europe?  Not so sure.

UK, its 3k cheapest with no black box in car and around 1k with a black box.

Thats before buying a car and Tax, so unless your working its just not a viable option, and if you are working then unless its a good job good luck buying anything else.

Basically you wait for 3 years after passing and it starts to drop off pritty fast in price.

What's this black box you speak of?  Is it something that just monitors the manner in which you drive (like if you start hard or stop too fast, or try to race around) that you have to send in to insurance?
