What's a show that you think shares some similarities with Friendship is Magic?

So what's a show you feel bares some similarities with MLP?

I personally feel that it has few things in common with Metalocalypse. Yea, I said it Metalocalypse. There are some obvious similarities like they involve a group of main characters and each one has a different personality. But it the fandom that gets my attention. Like MLP, Metalocalypse is enjoyed by both genders. What appears to be a show for dudes is also watched by girls. They also both have great music and Dethklok has some great songs like "Bloodlines" and "Symmetry". ("Babs Seed" is my favorite MLP song BTW.) Of course one's a children's show and the other is rated TV-MA. Back to the fandom, both shows have great artwork and NSFW artwork. I've browsed through Tumblr and found some awesome stuff (and NSFW stuff.) BTW you guys know how people like to ship Rainbow Dash and Applejack? Well people seem to ship Toki (he my favorite character) with Skwisgaar. So what do you guys think? Any other shows YOU feel are similar to Friendship is Magic.

Upon rewatching it I think MLP shares quite a bit in common with Gummi Bears.

Similarities

1. The main characters are animals with the ability to talk

2. Each character is based on an architype that is distinct, but character are also given a good amount of dept.

3. The role of magic friendship and team work is emphasized in many episodes

4. It has both adventure and slice of life focused episodes

5. takes place in its own fantasy world and does do quite a bit of world building.

Differences

1. Seems to focus on adventure a bit more featureing the villian in 64 out of 90 some odd episodes.

2. Besides the intro there are no musical numbers.

3. The moral has far less emphasis.

I see some similarities MLP has with Gravity Falls. Both shows consist of associates venturing through personal experiences, displaying relatable personalities, and learning a valuable life lesson at the end of most episodes.

agreed also dipper has the same ocd tenancies as twilight in the episode double dipper. Mable seems to be the Pinkie Pie of the show.

Well this is from show from Japan, but it does have a lot of things that are similar to MLP. The show is called Kamen Rider Fourze. It's about a kid named Gentaro and he is going to high school. He says that he well befriend everyone at the school and he kinda ends up doing that. Mostly just kids who get turned into monsters. He makes friends with a childhood friend, a sick boy, a cheerleader, a cool kids, a football player, a goth girl, and a transfer student ( who is also a Kamen Rider.). Together they deafened the school and students against a group who call themselves the zodiarts, who have an evil plain. Gentaro also helps out his friends when ever they have a problem or just can't deal with something.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2n65txQNMlo&list=WLAA8C0F329E163F84&index=11

The friendship comes more into play when Gentaro gets a new power up and needs the power of his friends in order to make it work.

Kamen Rider is also a show that has been going on for many years and came to the U.S twice. One was called Mask Rider, it means Kamen Rider in japanese and again a few years ago called Kamen Rider Dragon Knight.

No show is like  MLP.  My opinion - MLP is a unique show unlike no other that is humorous and sends a good message, any other show as awesome as MLP? Absolutely not!

MLP may be awesome but, there are awesome shows too. Like Meatlocalypse, Adventure Time and Regular Show. It's good to keep an open mind.

oh what about One Piece

it about friendship all the way out

You mean like every single shonen series in existence :huh: ?

Apart from sharing certain aspects (friendship, popculture references) with other shows, I don't think there is another show quite like FiM. it's pretty much a perfect storm, brought unto us by the combination of the source material and the creative people behind it.

Littlest Pet Shop shares some similarities, but it isn't all like how the Brony fandom makes it out to be (like, people claiming that it's completely trying to "rip-off" MLP's success. Well, obviously the Hub wanted it to appeal to Bronies so that they could have more viewers, but it's not like they're "stealing" MLP's thunder.)

The morals are similar, the plots are similar, the writing is similar, the music is similar, and the crew that works on it overlaps with MLP, but it's still quite unique in it's own right.

Oh, and there's A LOT of pop culture references.

The thing I'd probably say are the first similarities that people notice are the characters, and even that's not really saying much.

Minka=Pinkie (very obviously)

Penny=Fluttershy with slight hints of Rarity (the episode where she "freaked out" about Blythe messing up her dress showed that she actually really cares about her looks and she secretly likes attention.)

Zoe=Rarity (she's nothing like Twilight  :P )

Russel=Twilight

The not-so-small fandom (well, compared to MLP it's tiny, but it's larger than I thought it would it would be when it first aired) even has it's own Equestria Daily-esque blog (run by Bronies, no less) that proves that the fanbase is at least getting somewhere.

Don't forget that Sunil inherited the Dragonshy elements of Fluttershy. Both the cowardly and the "Let's get dangerous" sides. Pepper's and Penny's relationship reminds me heavily of Rainbow Dash's and Fluttershy's.

But, yeah, Littlest Pet Shop is a lot like MLP. I recommend Gailbreak as an introductory episode. It shows off all of the characters and has the tightest plot of any episode thus far. Plus, this:

I agree, the show isn't that bad actually in my opinion, but it just doesn't have the same.. Magic to it that MLP does, thats one of the reasons why i didn't bother to get into it. However it does share alot of similarity(Probably because of its made by the same company though, but still)

The problem is, I already spend enough time with MLP right now, adding another show like that would probably be to much :P.

Plus I love this fandom to much to split time with another one.. :P.

So yeah, those are my main reasons why. Its not a bad show by any regard, and it is quite similar to MLP in many ways.(Didn't lauren faust make both actually?)

In my opinion Winnie The Pooh has a lot of element that make MLP so great. They are both enjoyed by both genders, they both are based around. Friendship. The only difference is the amount of adult themes.

I second this. Gailbreak was the best episode, and the only episode so far I'd say compares to MLP (well, M.A. Larson wrote it). That scene also had epic background music and convinced me that Sunil is best pet.

Actually, Lauren has nothing to do with LPS, The series was made by husband and wife team Timothy Cahill and July McNally Cahill, who's had past experience creating My Gym Partner's a Monkey.

Oh, guess I was a bit misinformed in that case, sorry. They do have alot in common though. I guess they just both air on the hub so that contributes to it.

They do share elements, but that doesn't really mean its bad or anything, I just like I said don't have time to invest into watching MLP stuff and LPS stuff. :P.

this is going to be a little difficult because in all my years i've never met a non (japanese animation) show  quite like MLP before.  But there are certain elements of other shows that are similar and that I would be glad to touch on.

Well think i'm going to pick one and try to draw upon as much as i can.  Perhaps the most striking similarity is the theme of "bond"  granted what Ed and Al Share   since they are brothers  is more brotherly than anything else.  However  it still stands that an event brought everyone together.    For Ed and Al  Their quest to get their bodies back they a tremendous amount of inner strength   they had to endure but at the same time they fed off of each others inner strength.  and the same thing could be said for the mane six. I'm going to now take a brief glance at the relationship between Riza Hawkeye and Roy  and i'll just sum it up with one word.  loyalty.  Okay i'm going to back it up and end it pretty soon  but  We all know MLP  used to end with Twilight's "Dear Princess Celestia..." moment.   Both MLP and FMA  share 'moral themes that the shows are built upon    FMA's  theme   is move forward keep going no matter what and don't ever give up. At the end of all of this, both shows  also  convey positive messages.

The Raccoons.

Simple as that. This show is incredibly similiar to MLP, having similiar characters (even including Pinkie Pie equivalent, only split into trio of characters), plot points and overall location.

The Raccoons is darker than MLP, though, because, unlike MLP, it's not that cartoony. It rarely does something over the top, obeying rules of logic and physics, yet it remains entertaining for the whole family. That is, if you're ready for '88 stuff.

Yeah, this show isn't that young. But I guess I owe it for creating a basis for my interest in FiM.

Digimon.

A magnificent example i think. Every one of the 8 choosen children has a virtue, be it friendship, courage, reliability, knowledge, purity, love, hope and light. The show focus not only in the power of friendship but also on facing your fear, on teamwork, on trusting your fellow compannions wether you know 'em or not, to never give up and to remember there's always a light at the end of the tunnel. It's an excellent show that can bring a tear or two some of it's saddest moments (like Wizardmon's death). I recommend you to watch the first and best season, Digimon Adventure.

  • 1 year later...

Well, I originally couldn't think of proper comparisons, but two real good shows were brought up in this thread that serve as GREAT examples!

While I can't say much about Gummi Bears, I do remember the show having a GREAT sense of adventure as well as a nice light-hearted tone.

Digimon Adventure is the best example I feel. We have a group of kids who becaome close friends, deal with actual real-life issues (aside from the digimon themselves, haha), and generally come to grips with their situation. Their bonds grow stronger as the show progresses, and we're presented with some actual decent morality issues.

Kudos to the one who brought Digimon up. :)
