As the title says, what is your favourite musical? I would say there's many awesome musicals out there, but my personal favourite's "The Sound of Music" because the music itself reflects Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical maturity. I can't get to all of them sadly, so I placed the most popular ones on the poll. If you've got other choices, then say so in the responses. I can't get to them all so sorry if I haven't listed your favourite one.

It's a tie for me between Les Miserables and Evil Dead: The Musical (please add that to the list). Evil Dead is a hilarious parody of the horror genre, and though it is ridiculous, it takes pride in it's absurdity. Plus, it is the only musical with a splash zone. Meanwhile, Les Mis has some beautiful songs, and an incredible story. I love "Do you Hear the People Sing".

Other notable musicals for me are the Rocky Horror Picture Show (please add), Reefer Madness: The Musical, Sweeney Todd, and The Producers, although I love a lot of musicals. :) As you may tell, I prefer musicals about rather unusual subject matter.

Out of all the options on there, I think West Side Story is definitely the most enjoyable. The themes of solitary romance and street gang confidence were so parallel and defined beautifully - songs of each theme jumping from one to the other. Sondheim's lyrics can be absolutely genius - especially in Gee Officer Krupke, "The trouble is he's growing, the trouble is he's grown" is such a clever way of showing how the authorities screw the young people over, which was the context. Not just that, but he can bring in the simple metaphors such as in Tony's song Somewhere - you get the idea.

Avenue Q isn't up there, but I love that too. Super humorous, super fun, songs are catchy. It's just not as classic as West Side Story.

I see no Moulin Rouge. What is this I don't even---

I actually really like Les Mis, cept Moulin Rouge plays some of my favorite songs ever, and it is lovely looking and pretty funny. So yea. Add it. Naow.

EDIT: People voted for Phantom of the Opera? What is this I don't even---

I am caught between the Lion King and the Lion King. Which one should I choose? Oh, this is so incredibly compelling. I'll have to go with the Lion King.

Titanic isn't an option? I am disappointed thoroughly that you didn't have it an an option.

The Blues Brothers (original film) is the only musical I can actually stand at all. I'm not sure why they make me cringe so much.

Mind you Moulin Rouge and Chicago wasn't so bad.

Actually its only musical films I cringe at I've seen several performances of musical theater and I'm just fine with that (Avenue Q FTW)!

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The concept of an R-rated, ultra-violent musical is very intriguing to me. I liked the dark, depressing mood of the film, intertwined with some subtle comedy. Quite an exquisite film, in my opinion.

Even though it's technically an Opera, I'm going with Les Misérables. It has some absolutely great songs, and the plot is pretty good as well. I usually don't like musicals that much, but this one just blew me away when I saw it.

Choosing between Sweeney Todd (the stage version, I didn't care too much for the movie) and Les Misérables (I loved both versions) would be impossible for me.  And since they're both pretty popular in this thread, I'll go with my third favorite:  Sunday in the Park with George.

Needless to say, it's not very well-known, and if you do now about it it's probably because the unique meter of "Putting It Together" was used in "Art of the Dress."  Regardless, it's absolutely fantastic.  The songs are incredibly well-composed, made to fit the characters rather than just being catchy.

For example, the stuttering pattern of "Color and Light" reflects George Seurat's famous painting technique, using small dots of color instead of mixing them.

Spoilered for extreme geekiness.

  • 1 month later...

Well, that as the toughest decision of my life.

I was debating between Wicked, a modern twist on a good musical already (Wizard of Oz), Lion King, which was my childhood, or Les Mis.

In the end, people singing really emotionally about the French Revolution.

I was almost tempted to press other and vote for the Little Mermaid, since it's been in my head for the past few weeks. I was suprised it didn't make the list.

I haven't seen many, but my favorite has been Fiddler on the Roof. I might be interested in checking out Wicked once I finish the book, especially because I hear the musical is much better.

I love In the Heights, which is funny because I'm not actually that interested in that genre of music, but the story just really touched me, plus it was funny. Other than that I would have to say Phantom of the Opera.

How could I pick anything but spamalot? I love the humour, the music was rather catchy, the whole thing was just a great production in general! Fiddler on the Roof was a close second, I really enjoyed that one too.

Woah, how is Little Shop of Horrors not on that list? Am I really that old?

Easily my favorite Rick Moranis movie too. Great stuff.

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. A great musical staring Neil Patrick Harris (Barney from how I met your mother). It's about Dr. Horrible of course. A super villain who owns a vlog and has a crush on a girl he sees at the laundromat, the only problem is that she likes the hero more. Heads up, sad story.

[EDIT] Here's the movie

South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut. The movie is infact a musical. The entire movie is just a parody of most musicals. I love some of the songs in it and also love South Park in general. Not to mention the movie is hilarious.

I'm not big on musicals, but my favorite was my high school's performance of "How To Succeed In Business (Without Really Trying)." It was funny and clever and a lot of kids I liked appeared in it. xD
