Why do people complain about "how bad music is today"?

Ughhh, this thread is so old, I look like such derp.

People who complain about "today's music" are the same sort of dense nuisances that say movies are dead. The problem isn't the music or the movies. It's that they're refusing to look anywhere but at the crummy stuff.

That's the problem, some people are too lazy to look for new music so they just claim that it's dead, even though it isn't.

Whenever someone talks about how music sucks these days I myself feel very insulted because they are the reasons why so many great bands don't get the recognition they deserve. You could at least try to make a difference in popularity.

Also for the people who think music nowadays sucks: Myrath, Scale the Summit, Valdhjarta, Intervals, Dillinger Escape Plan, Periphery, Animals as Leader, August Burns Red, The HAARP Machine, ABORTED, BARE, Winds of Plague, Cyberoptics, Flutter Rex, Jackal Queenston, Masutazu, Pomegranate Tiger, Wolfgun, Sirens, Gru, Born of Osiris, Above the Broken, Aversions Crown, Genocide District and Parkway Drive all want a talk with you. Be happy I didn't name more bands because my list of modern bands is endless.

Come at me bro, if you only like "old" music you're missing out way too much, but it doesn't matter because you're not invited anyway!

EDIT: I thought it might be necessary to post some of this stuff:

Atlas Novus - Scale The Summit

One Of Us Is The Killer - The Dillinger Escape Plan

Mata Hari - Intervals

Merciless Times - Myrath

Voodoo Mon Amour - Diablo Swing Orchestra

Yes I know it's mostly metal but that's all I know really besides electronical music. But we all know electronical is considered "fake music" by shallow people so I didn't even bother posting it because I don't want to get into a pointless argument again.

And yes, I have listened to the music examples you posed to me. They're interesting to say the least, but not something I'd listen to everyday for my pleasure. Nonetheless, at least I know rock isn't all just banging or screaming. Personally, I listen to punk rock and Eurobeat in my spare time when I just want to chill. Classical music is great, but I like to listen to other music as well.

Yea, I know, that post is old, but I feel like I have something important to say on the matter

Music is about invoking emotions, and if bands manage to do so by screaming and banging, what's wrong with that? I feel like that shows another dimension of anger and despair. It's just not the same kind of angry as the example you posted

Today's music is a lot of different things. You can't possibly hate all of it. At least, that's my thinking. I may not like some of it too much, but there are other types that you can listen to. Bad music to me is that stupid stuff that people get off to doesn't have any point and is basically the same thing over and over, with a few curse words to top it off. That's stupid music. But honestly, everyone can find a type of music they like. And 'Yesterday's Music'? Well, it's being played today, isn't it? Doesn't that make it today's music? ;)

Now, what I don't understand is people my age who say things like, "I was born in the wrong generation, 80's music is better" or something like "I'm 14 and I'm sorry for what my generation did to music". What exactly did my generation do that was "SO BAD"? Please explain to me.

Much of what came out in the 80's and to some degree 90's  was Really Good.  Not to say there is NO good music today.  It just feels like much of it is trying to copy  what has been done and doing a poor job of it.

I've seen people say "Back then artist wrote their own music". What the fuck? They still do, and they always will. It's always been that way and always will.

It has not always been that way.  Like today there were Preformers that do not write their own music.  Some do some don't.

So now tell me, what is it exactly that you don't like about todays music? Please, just tell me. What's so "bad" about it?

Presonally County has abandond all the Qualitys of Country music and feels like a weaker version of Rock.   Seriously  if my country music station is playing The Eagles and calling it counrty there is something wrong.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eagles_%28band%29

or worse yet Kid Rock taking Wearwolfs of London and giving it crappy Lyrics.

Not to say I dont like anything out today.  Mostly Rock.  Never understood the apeal of hiphop or rap.

Also my opinions are just that, Opinions.  Not right or wrong.

If your pears opinions are that "todays music sucks." then I don't get why your upset at that.

First of all I was born in the wrong generation and I know it. It's very simple I just don't fit our generation. No need to argue with that.

I think the only reason people complain about how bad our music is today is because of the mainstream crap. Not all of the mainstream music is bad though, there are a lot of hidden gems. I believe that music will get better, it's just sometimes there is good music and then there is bad music. It can't all be good and how can you expect it to be good when you compare it to the old classics. Of course nothing comes close to what music used to be. But it doesn't mean music today isn't good, it just isn't amazing. I don't want to sound like a hypocrite, I like a lot of modern music and I listen to all types of electronic music and though I admit it isn't as good as music from the 1930s-2000s it's still fun, all I care about is the bass anyway. I don't even listen to the lyrics, I only do that with older music.

All generations have a certain music style that will make that decade unique and for this decade it's obviously the decade were we blow up our subwoofers.

I guess it's just the soulless mainstream crap that's giving music a bad name. I'm sure there are still people that have passion for their music.

Much of what came out in the 80's and to some degree 90's  was Really Good.

While I'll admit to the 90's being my favorite decade in music, I have mixed feelings about the 80's. In the 80's there's was plenty of cheesy yucky hair bands like Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, etc.

Here's something really good that's recent :)

I don't really prefer 80s music, I, quite frankly belong in today's generation.

Nevertheless - love and tolerance. Whatever floats your boat.

Mostly because people think that there is NO good music of today; which is a pretty big lie, in all honesty. Like most have already said, bad and good music will always exist, it's just a matter of preference. But, people seem to forget that there is more variety of today; more genres means that there's bound to be more good and more bad music. The people who say that ALL of today's music is awful, is obviously not looking hard enough for music to enjoy.

How I see it Producers and Record companies has found an optimized system and style to sell the most amount of music and attract the mass audience. Its not that I find the music bad, it just doesn't speak to my worldview and I'm tired of the constantly repeated forms that are used.

I don't mind music today. I don't like every song I hear on the radio. Most of them are okay though. There are certain radio songs I just love, like Radioactive for example. Also, there will always be both good and bad music. It's inevitable. I don't care how old or new it is. A good songs a good song.

Ignorance, I guess.

I think partly because a lot of people just use the radio and popularity charts to judge today's music as a whole.

It's because no one knows what opinions are anymore and everyone wants to think they're right.

Music will always be shitty, and very good, what everything is relative to, is your taste in music, not someone else's.

I'm gonna be honest......I agree with them.  Most of the music you hear these days are either remixes or don't sound like music at all (what i mean by that is most songs are adding rap or hip-hop to it).  Now I, for one do hear a lot of crappy as hell songs, however there are some good ones.  10% to 15% of present music is good.   I tend to listen to more of the 80's and 90's songs b/c those songs were the best.

I don't know either, I mean music hasn't been popular or made since like 2009

Ne-Yo and Drake are actually pretty good.

Yeah, I like them both quite a bit myself. I appreciate RnB and Hip-Hop a lot more than most on these forums seem to, it's the music I grew up with.

I think it's more of an individual preference. I was born in the middle 80's yet I like a fair amount of music from the 90's (KORN, Disturbed, and the such like that). Though I do have to admit that some of todays music could have some negative influence on todays youth.

This is why I listen to trance, techno, dubstep, and other electronic music much anymore. I avoid the mainstream and actually enjoy the music for being what it is instead of having to sift through the massive vault of what music is out there just to try to find something worth listening to.

I think it's because they generalize "Today's music" into one big category when they are only talking about one or two bands/artists. They might hear a pop song and go "Ooh, that's trash. What a waste of my time modern artists are taking up" yet there could be a band that is very much like an older band that they like, but will blow it off due to the stereotype they have just brought up.

I hate that song so much. Everytime it first comes on I'm all like "Oh awesome, it's Warren Zevon!" :)  and then Kid Rock starts singing and I'm like "Oh..."  :okiedokielokie:

I think some people honestly just have nostalgia goggles on. Yes, there is a lot more crap today, and back in the day, people put more effort into their music. Some people just aren't looking for the good stuff :twilight:

Well, if you want some individual insight on this dilemma (coming from a teenager) i'd say that it's not only because music has become "the thing" and everything, but it's usually the content that makes me want to give up on the industry. It's usually the same formula, basically...like there are many cliche's I can point out with each genre I notice. Sometimes I just don't like the singers who I think don't even deserve a career in that field.

Well I guess what I don't like about today's music is how sexualized most are. Blurred Lines, Anaconda. etc. But then, there are sex songs in every generation, so hating on this one would be plain stupid. Every generation's got good/bad songs; it just depends on opinion.
