Telling your parents you're a brony

I told my mom and she thought I was crazy. I explained about the world building and the writing and the jokes, and she thought it was awesome.

I told my dad and he thought I was crazy. I explained about the world building and the writing and the jokes, and he thought I was crazy. After a couple months, he still thinks I'm crazy, but he has asked to watch an episode.

I guess he's crazy too.

Crazy people are the best people! :D

Ice, if you don't mind. Can I use this?

I really want to show my Dad.

Of course you can! The reason I started this thread was to help people tell their parents and have legitiment backing!

I have yet to tell my parents, although my younger brother found out when he walked in on me watching an episode and I told my cousins about it during Christmas.

Conversation with brother:

Brother: WTF was that, is that... ponies?!

Me: Um, maybe...

Brother: *Shakes head and walks off, then proceeds to avoid me for the next few days*

Luckily I was able to get him to calm down by showing him a review of it by one of the critics on TGWTG (his favorite website), and now he accepts it but still won't watch it. The conversation with my three cousins went much smoother and they quickly took on to the idea, which relieved some of my earlier anxiety.

Now though with my parents (and friends), who still don't know I watch the show, when I try to tell them all of my nervousness returns.

I like your idea of sending an email though, perhaps I will try sending one to my mom first.

I haven't seen my dad in years. As for my mom, I never told her because I never really had any reason to. It's not like the subject of ponies come up much when I talk to her. She's a luddite, though, so she probably would have no idea such a thing even exists.

It went quite well! :D

My mom and I are pretty close so she was actually surprised that I thought she would question me being a brony.

Cool parent is awesome! ^_^

I am unsure how my dad will react though, he is a big fan of cartoons so maybe I will be lucky.

I got a face-palm as a result, and I think my dad thinks me and step-brother were just joking about it when we told him we watch it. I get even more face-palms when I head towards the girls MENs section of wal-mart :P

  • 3 weeks later...

My mum is someone whom I'm actually trying to get watching the show...I told her about it, and so far she seems interested, but hasn't wanted to watch an actual episode yet. I may need to sell it a little better than I did before.

I haven't told my father, but that's only because it'd add to his repetoire of jokes he'd constantly make that would get tiresome in a hurry.

Both of them have noticed a general uplift in my mood ever since I started watching the show and they think it's a positive, wonderful thing, so obviously neither one of them would look down on me because of my watching the show. But then, my parents have always been a bit more tolerant than the average parents.

My parents too. They both see the positive aspects of the community and I'm content with them being accepting of my love for the show and I'm not attempting to get them to watch it.

The first to learn of my brony-ness was my brother, his inital reaction was to rage and give me strange looks for a few days. Eventually he cooled down, and now he accepts it. Then I told my cousins who all thought it was awesome, so yay! I overdid the explaining when I told my mom, she said she didn't care what I watched and left it at that.

I have not told my dad or friends yet though, my dad probably has an inkling and my friends hear me reference the show from time to time so they will more than likely catch on soon.

My mom doesn't care, she actually kind of likes it, although, I don't see myself watching it with her. I haven't said anything to my dad, but he probally has some kind of clue with the T-shirts, Twilight Sparkle plush, and calender in my room, but he has never commented on them.

My parents are super tolerant, so most of the uncomfortableness in our relationship comes from my general awkwardness. I've been trying to work out a way to let them know without actually just saying, "I like my little pony." My newest plan is to take the "Lauren Faust made PPG and Iron Giant" approach, which seems good since both of my parents love those. I have a hard time telling them this kind of embarrassing stuff, though.

The best way I think to do this would be to find an article that basically says "here's what Ms. Faust has worked on, and now there's this new My Little Pony thing!" and e-mail it, or post it on Facebook or something.

It's obvious to me now that I'm overthinking this, and the better option would be to just tell them, since I don't think they'll be too weird about it.

I first tried to explain it to my dad, but couldn't think of all the reasons off of the spot, and ended up stuttering and looking embarresed, with my dad waliking away. Thats why I came up with the email. It's much easier to develope an organized train of thought and project it in a neat manner.

It's probably not what you're expecting, but here you go. I want a more show accurate Twilight. Also, sorry for the extremly large photo, I was too lazy to resize.

I've tried explaining it to my parents but they don't seem to believe how serious I am about it. Or how serious anyone is about it. That pretty much makes it impossible for me to explain it properly.

I can't make signatures.

Sooo... yeah

This is exactly what I'm worried would happen. I always have problems being articulate about things like this in real-life conversations.
