technology Why do people depend so much on their cellphones?

~Rule 63~ Lyeco

Recommended Posts

So I was asking the question. I saw many women (usually teenagers) use their cellphone a lot.

It's like they can't stop, even if the teacher and the parents get angry. I know they use it mostly for their friends but Why?

(PS I HATE TEXTING AND MY DAD WON'T GIVE ME CELLPHONE EVEN IF I AM AT HIGH SCHOOL. AND I AM A BOY)

They have nothing better to do than text with their girlfriends. I find texting to be stupid... why spend 3 minutes writing something, and then spend 10 minutes waiting for a reply. Why not just say it in less than 5 seconds and get an immediate response?

They should really go read a good book, get into some decent forums like theese or go to a party and have fun. Seriously girls are literally imprisioned by their phones.

Well I have seen many men addicted to their phones.

but I think in general it just makes things much easier to contact people. I'm not much of a texter and didn't really get into it until after high school(gosh It's been 5 years since high school o.o..Phones have changed a lot since then)

but in college and in work I find my cellphone very helpful, It's fast and easy especially if your doing a group project and need to meet up with more then one person.

I just like to chat with friends.

Though, I'm not one of those girls that is constantly texting in class. I know I must do my work, and I will do it. But out of class... I'm on my phone a lot. Even right now I'm on kik messenger talking with my friends.

Texting doesn't just bring a negative response. Sometimes I talk to people to find information that is beneficial for me. Or maybe I need to talk to someone because of an emergency. Either way (or other ways), texting isn't always negative.

Also, I'm getting sick of people that just assume all teenage girls are addicted to their phones. It's not every girl.

Personally, I like to chat with friends, but get a little shy when talking...

I stumble on my words, and it's harder to express how I feel with real words since I try to hide emotiona in real life.

Plus, if I have a funny conversation with a friend, it will be saved on my phone!

(Whoops, only covered Texting.)

My short answer to why females use cellphones so much because they can connect with friends, Facebook, Youtube, any anything those young'un devices they use these days.

ugh texting. How I despise it so, but I won't get into that. Back on topic though, I'm guessing both guys and girls use their cellphones often because it is easier to communicate with each other and also because they are very social people, but don't have time to meet up with their friends, so they use cellphones to chat and whatnot.

While it is that there's a wide amount of gals who text the same could be said about guys. But really I don't see this too often outside of high school really, maybe it's because they've learned something which is important to every individuals personal growth.

Good 'ol Discipline.

Besides, if you think about it a lot of people don't like high school due to it being boring and a waste of time. So a natural outlet would be to doodle, daydream or text their friends. I'm not sure about you but I've found texting with my friends to be a good time burner when there's nothing else to do. Funny thing though, I haven't texted since I myself was in high school in '07.

Its not really depending on their phones. It is a easy way to stay connected with several people, since a text can go out to 10 people faster then calling them would be. Beyond that and a time burner I don't get it, but then again mobile technology scares me.

I would like to just say that this isn't something that is exclusive to the fairer gender, I know many guys who are the same way, they are constantly using cellphones either texting or web browsing.

Personally I don't see the appeal, I use my phone to make phone calls and little else, but hey each to there own.

I think it's anyone with a phone and contacts, not just girls. They're a great way to keep in touch when you can't always see each other. I know I spent a majority of my past days texting my friends and previous lovers. I don't too much anymore. Mostly because I'm a bit of a forgotten kitten sad.png

That, and I don't have the money to pay for the bill after I quit the worst job in the history of worst jobs. McDonald's stinks, man. Figuratively, and literally.

Well in my opinion and my personal experience, some girls like to keep themselves updated such as Facebook and Twitter. Some of them also used their cellphones/smart phones to play games such as Candy Crush Saga, and other new trendy games.Well I also have to admit I like to keep myself updated at Facebook once, but I got rid of that because I know that I can use my time for better use.Girls CAN change their attitude if they wanted to.Now the only girl I have to stop is My Mom.She is just like the updater. She keeps updating stuff in her Facebook. And she would never miss a day without Facebook.(Not Literally)

pfft this is not only applied to girls

I would understand if we were 10 years ago, but now with the boom of the smartphones and the data based internet pretty much everyone is addicted, from boys to girls, to teenagers to adults.

and asking that to a girl is the same as asking them "why do you have to go to the bathroom together?". Answer, they're females, don't mess up with their vanity, we'll never understand *shrugs* img-1379355-5-xtWXQl1.png

You do know that everyone is depended on their cellphones right? You kinda have to be. I"m a boy and I'm depended on my cell. So saying only girls are depended on their sales in kinda rude to the female population.

I think both boys and girls are depended on their sales, and you just can't put one action one one gender.

Guys are pretty obsessed with their phones too. Just sayin'

As most people already said, it's mainly cuz people like to keep up with social networks or their friends. For some, keeping up with facebook is a way to keep up with what their friends have been up to as well. But on the other hand, it is unhealthy to watch your phone almost all day, and nothing beats direct contact with other people.

The cell phone is possibly one of the most useful tools of the modern age. I understand why people use it very often, but I don't understand why people use it so much. Text messages are intended to be quick messages sent between mobile phone users, so I think that longer conversations should be kept to instant messengers on PC. I, for one, often open Skype and spend hours on end just talking to people. Yet still people waste their phone credit/contract texts within 2 weeks.

Well, I can't speak for the rest, but I have a pretty short attention span... or something like that. I don't have the amazing ability that my parents do where they can just sit there and do nothing for a long time. I have to have my attention on something. lol. The cell phone is an incredibly amazing invention. Texting and internet on my phone help keep me alive. xD

However, from my experience this isn't just girls. The guys at my work are glued to their phones during break and lunch.

Not only girls depend on their phone it's gender neutral, I'm not that way though.. Only at school but that's just because it's school. On a normal day, I only have the phone on me if I would have some problems. There isn't anyone that calls me, unless it's my family. So I hardly use my phone, but I have started to use it more as a MP3. I have a radio transmitter, so I have started to use it more.

I guess people are depending on their phones more and more because they are so much more then just phones. They are just like computers now, so it's understandable. It's just so they can contact their friends. Especially with all them social medias, since phones can access the internet, people can become even more addicted to them. I have just never been addicted to them myself, I don't feel the need of being always available.

Im a guy and I use my cellphone (pfft, you 'Muricans and your silly words) all the time, I listen to my music on it constantly when I'm not at home and I text my friends when I need to know something from them like when an assignment is due in or why they're not in or online.

I'm a Male, and I'm addicted and Depend on my "Cellphone" Because Of One Simple Reason, Music, Nothing Else, I mean it's good to keep In touch with Friends with, But Ehh,

It's Gender Neutral it's Not Just Females that do, I've got Plenty of Friends who can't keep of their's and they're males.

It's Just Upto the person, and Well It's a good way to socialize I guess.

Here we go again with the stereotyping! Many males are just as dependent on their mobiles. I had a mobile for some time but I lost it, and then only thing I really used it for was for planning social events with my friends and keeping up with my parents when I was out somewhere.

I don't feel the need to constantly be connected; I like to have my own space and being invaded with a little hunk of plastic isn't my idea of socializing. (Wait a second, that's all I do, I just do it on the computer.)

In essence it's more I value time alone to do what I want.

Because people like talking to their friends, and texting allows for a more free flowing conversation than talking on the phone, plus you can do it in situations where calling people and chatting wouldnt be appropriate. I text like mad, because talking to my friends is fun. And i feel a compulsion to answer texts back immediately. Not out of addiction but so that they dont feel like im blowing them off. Only times i dont answer texts immediately are if im driving or in a meeting at work

I rarely use my cell phone. I rarely text. I don't use my phone that much, and it's not a smart phone so there's no games or anything on it. I don't mind. My phone does it's job. It bugs me how much people use their phone in my school. I swear they all have an unhealthy addiction. The teacher is yelling to put phones away and they won't, they just keep texting. I can't imagine what would happen if all of their phones just stopped working. It'd be insanity. They're WAY Too reliant.

I'm not exactly certain for others, but personally, I need my phone for a lot of things. they're pretty much essential these days with our current lifestyles.

I'm a pretty sociable person, and I like to keep in contact with my friends, texting is just a quick way of keeping up to date while you're doing other stuff. It's not like you wait there constantly staring at your phone until you get a reply. Usually I'm out doing other stuff that I can't do while in a phonecall. And it's not very practical to wait until you see people in person to catch up the sort of stuff you'd send through text.

Also it's a really good way of organising things like movie nights. nights out, meet-ups etc. And useful for work too, because you never know when your boss might want to get hold of you.

And phones are just great for other things, games when you're waiting for a bus or whatever, music, youtube, internet, Even just telling the time. They're a great little piece of technology.

I agree that there is a time and place for them, but it most cases, I find it hard to think of a reason why someone wouldn't really need a phone.

also, it's not just girls, I've seen plenty of guys do exactly the same thing.

I don't really get it either, but so long as people aren't being rude about it like talking or texting at times where it would be distracting than I don't really care. What really pisses me off is when people do it when they are driving, there have been numerous studies that have shown that it can be just as dangerous as driving drunk. If these people have a death wish than so be it, all I ask is that they leave others out of it.
