Slow twitch and fast twitch muscles

 

I'm sure many know that there are slow twitch muscles and fast twitch muscles. Muscle type 1 and 2 and then 2a and 2b. If you already know what type, then share if you don't then read! On here: http://sportsmedicine.about.com/od/anatomyandphysiology/a/MuscleFiberType.htm

Now for me, I think I'm type 2a, I'm a good sprinter but I also seem to be able to last for a little. Although I can say that I don't fit number 1 perfectly since I do become tired rather quickly. Maybe because of my asthma but I would think it's the muscles too. I don't really have a good example other then that I'm a fast runner but I can last for a long time more of a sprinter. So 2a fits, since it's mix between the two.

 

So what's your muscle type, type 1 slow twitch or type 2 fast twitch. :)

I think I´d definitely be Slow twitch (Type I), just for obvious reasons...

I have been running for so many years, and mainly long distance. I´m not a good sprinter, but I can run for hours without collapsing (marathon). Maybe that´s less worth, and/ or looks less impressive than Type II would, but I like it this way, idk :).

I think I´d definitely be Slow twitch (Type I), just for obvious reasons...

I have been running for so many years, and mainly long distance. I´m not a good sprinter, but I can run for hours without collapsing (marathon). Maybe that´s less worth, and/ or looks less impressive than Type II would, but I like it this way, idk :).

Thanks, I just thought about it since I remembered it from gym class. So I thought I should make a topic, just to get some fresh discussion on here. :P

 

I thought I was type 1 at first mainly because I'm more of a runner then anything else sport related. Then I figured I was closer to number 2, because I always have that sudden boost. I just use all the power at once, but I end up at number 2a since even though it's mostly just all the power at once I can still last for a while so I ended with 2a. I would never last a marathon though.. Or I don't think so.

It´s more like a mind-thing in the end. And I wish i could be type 2, actually I´m trying right now (going to the gym, gaining weight, derp, I mean, I´m about 176 and only at 68 kg)...

I hope that doesn´t effect my endurance too much then :/

It´s more like a mind-thing in the end. And I wish i could be type 2, actually I´m trying right now (going to the gym, gaining weight, derp, I mean, I´m about 176 and only at 68 kg)...

I'm similar, I'm 170.. Turned out it was actually 169 forget that, it's 170. lol I'm also at around 67 kg it goes up and down, being lightweight helps me being type 2a otherwise I would probably not have the endurance but being lightweight gave me the speed too. The endurance is still very good considering I have asthma well I actually have better endurance then most people my age. We have something called beep test which just calculates your endurance and I have scored 11 on it. Considering people that didn't have asthma and were just more fit were getting around the same number or 13 and some more while others without asthma were getting 7. So that's pretty cool.

 

I tried gaining weight for a long time and finally managed last year to get myself up to normal numbers I think.. I've been doing more exercising recently and just lifting in general. I think it's important to exercise by doing a wide variety of exercises. Not only lifting, also going for a walk, run or go on one of them bicycles.. Haven't used one for years and don't plan on doing so. lol 

 

I'm sure gaining weight doesn't effect your endurance that much, if you got heavier you would have gotten stronger in the process so if anything you'll last for longer. That is if you're talking about gaining weight by gaining muscle.

 

I need to try out a marathon, well maybe..

And speaks a lot for you if you score this high, congrats :3. I tried to gain some weight before (but got lazy again), means for about half a year I only joked around with weights and that kinda crap, and I got up to 72...

Nothing remarkable, I don´t think it did too much to my endurance... I think I should just deal with my bodytype and make the best of it :3.

(and, jesus, I have my next run in a month, haven't run long distances in 2 months... this will be horrible)

Probably somewhere in the middle. My main sport is weightlifting, the only cardio I really do is heavy bag work-but my workouts usually move at a pretty good pace. I find that, when I need to I can explode pretty well and seem to have good endurance.

I was told a long time ago that heavy weight training was among the best things you could do for long term good health-I'd say, so far so good.

Somewhere in the middle for me, but most of the times, I'm usually a fast one at best.

 

Even I get surprised at how fast I can be at times, but with constant exercise and movement, I'm not surprised.

Since you say you're both in the middle, I would consider 2a. Since, then you have the same aspects that number 2 has and some of number 1. You might both be 2a, I can of course not say so for certain. You can only know by experience. I'm pretty sure that @@Thunderchild, is 2a. Since you say you can explode pretty well, but you have that endurance.

I think I fit Slow-Twitch because I am a jogger and I typically run moderate to long distances and I am capable of maintaining a constant pace in them.

 

I get tired out quickly if I just burst out into a sprint though.

I have slow twitches that happen on and off when I'm done exercising after a long day. It stops for a few seconds then the twitches come back.

In short, do you have a lot of endurance slow twitching or the fast twitching which is more like sprinting. A lot of power in a short period of time. :)

Hmm, maybe I'd be type 1? I might just be saying that because most of the serious physical activity I do is long distance stuff. I did marching band and those summer marches were loooonnng, let me tell you. BUT on the other hand, sprinting really tires me out, I think, more so than marching. Still maybe all that marching band practice just made me more prepared for long distance marching, because I definitely didn't do any kind of sprinting training.

Definately a Type 2b. I can have a ton of strength and/or speed, but it lasts a very short amount of time. I'm glad I get that high energy for low stamina though, totally worth the trade off.

Mostly type II, I have always been gifted with great strength which I have honed even further through weight lifting as well as some cardio. My legs are especially powerful, at the height of my strength I was able to leg press over 1500 pounds which wasn't even my maximum as none of the machines I have been on could go any further than that. I am relatively fast, but am only good for short bursts of speed and have to pace myself carefully or I tie out too quickly.

Actually the summer marches were really fun, more fun than the football games, I would say, as well as much more work. Sure, it was unbearably hot and there were very little breaks and it was tortuous when the people in front of us would stop because we had to march in place (all the work, no progress  :okiedokielokie:), but it was fun for some reason. I guess it's fun to just go strolling through town blowing your horn, loud as can be, and breaking into dance in the middle of the street  :catface:
