Why do many people hate classical music nowadays?

Hi people from this beautiful forum

I want to ask you this very simple question. Why people hate classical music?

It's been strange why people hate to listen these kind of music, I tried to plug my iPod once to a big speaker and people curse saying, "You are listening to this Sh!t? You're a jerk" or "This sounds terrible, dub step please!" Or ETC . Why? I was very disappointed to the people we have to today. I am saying many but not all.

So please answer this. I wanna know why :(

because people are trying to "stay within the mainstream" and not become hipsters though i do sometimes joke with my friends and call myself a hipster though i don't like listening to straight classical i rather a good mixture of classical though i can handle any genre except for pop and boy bands though i do find it funny how people don't like classical even when it's used the right way it starts to become really badass

We are truly a world of uncultured swine.

Now, I don't consider classical my favorite genre, but it's still absolutely excellent music. We need to learn to respect the oldies.

Because people try to act cool and like the stupid mainstream music nowadays like justin bieber, lady gaga, nicki minaj, etc.  I don't always listen to classical, however I do enjoy it and don't understand why people would prefer dubstep over it.  It really doesn't make sense to me either.

In my entire life I have never met anyone who dislikes classical. I happen to be a huge fan of both dub-step and classical since I believe they work very well together, but shame to these people calling it such profane names. I think that we can all agree that the main stream is quite poluted

As to your question, it has to do with how music has evolved and different general tastes. Nowadays most people don't want to listen to classical since they've been exposed to other genres by the radio, their parents or peers. Classical just doesn't seem to be all that popular anymore. I personally hate dubstep, rap and metal. I'd take classical over any of those genres, but it's not my forte. I really only listen to pop and country. Not the old whiny country, but the more modern country. It's just how I was raised. Again, nothing wrong with classical, just many don't appreciate it anymore. Me being among them, but if I was in a room with you I wouldn't mind it being played. Better than dub step in every single way. Classical is not terrible, I can assure you of that. :)

Because admittedly, even as a fan of classical music, there I a ton of classical fans who are pretentious and feel by listening to it they are more "cultured" than the unwashed masses.

I've known people who bring up their classical music in inappropriate conversations just so they can accuse people who aren't "in the know."

My guess is people are sheepish, following whatever is popular to fit in and not be odd, however I noticed the hatred is also directed toward oldies, folk and classic rock. I have an appreciation for classical and baroque music, because I have in in orchestras since I was nine, playing the clarinet and baroque recorders, the amount of practice and work to play to the rhythm is a challenge, there are slow and fast notes, and to play with perfect timing and pitch requires much effort. I like most music, the vulgar and ignominious song artists get too much attention, as for me I choose Johann Pachebel, George Frederick Handel or Johann Sebastian Bach over Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber.

I kind of getting what you're saying.  There are plenty of people who don't particularly care for it, so they just don't listen to it.  But yeah, I've never heard of anybody saying "bah! I hate classical music!" the same way that plenty of people will openly say that they hate country music, rap or heavy metal.

Basically, I don't know what the OP is talking about.  >_>

Well, I'm pretty darn tootin' that the main reason for the hate and discrimination of classical music is that they don't wear cowboy hats. That is all.

Hating Classical Music? That is one thing I do not understand, Classical Music can be soothing or exciting.

It's mostly due to peoples' perspective and the state society is in right now. People's' like and dislike change over time. It is just pure wrong to simply state, "You are a barbarian from the North if you don't listen to Classical Music." By that logic, you are a barbarian if you don't wear a suit, speak in pure English and follow the gentleman's code or the ladies code.

Anyways, have a nice day.

It doesn't have enough wubs for their taste. :P

Okay, on a more serious note, classical music usually invokes some sort of strong feeling, usually sadness or joy. It also can take a longer time to build up then other music.

With only those two points, some people may not like classical because it takes too long to build in their opinion, or they don't like the fact that the music can cause such strong feeling. That's just my guess.

Btw, classical music is amazing. :D

I don't know... I think people get an idea in their head and just judge it from that and never really give it a further chance.

A lot of people characterize classical music's value as of it being "relaxing", but if I had the idea that's what was good about it in my mind, I would likely not even bother listening to it, because although listening to music (of any kind...that I like. lol) does help me relax, listening to music that is relaxing does not sound exciting to me at all.

I can't think of any classical music I like for being "relaxing". Classical music can be just as intense as heavier pop music.

It may also have to do with the fact that it can be hard to listen to sometimes. A lot of classical music even I don't listen to. Sometimes people may listen to those pieces that don't appeal to them and write off the rest of classical music for that reason, and then never hear anything that they might actually like.

Lastly - and not to sound snobby - sometimes I think people just don't want to put the effort into it. A lot of classical pieces are long, and require more listening to understand the value and entertainment of them. The populace oftentimes prefers those catchy pop tunes that are instantly stuck in their head. It's a shame because classical music actually can be very catchy.

Either way, it's their loss, not mine.

Hate? How could you hate classical music? I get not liking it, but hating it? Really? That's kind of harsh. I mean, classical music is awesome.

Some good old fashioned Beethoven Piano music is so soothing.

Rise of the Valkyries is simply epic.

All of the old 30's music from Fallout 3 is also pretty awesome.

I appreciate old, and "classical" music. At least it's not all autotuned songs about "getting some".

I love all genres of music EXCEPT country. My God, country music can go die ina fire. I don't care much for mainstream rap but I do like good underground rappers like Matlock. But Kid Cudi? Gucci Mane? Can't stand them. Their makes me want to throw up. My genres include: rock, metal (speed, thrash, grunge, etc), hip hop, folk, techno, dubstep, and definitely classical. Classical is the foundation for our music today. But I can see how people hate it. It's 300 years old and actually makes your brain work and for some reason, people don't like using that 2 kilogram lump of nerves that separates the idiots from those who can actually have a positive influence on the world.

Classical has a certain charm to it that'll never disappear. People just try to keep mainstreaming, but in that progress, completely ignoring some truely hidden gems out there. Like this one, fx:

It might not be as in your face, but it's the kinda song you would fall asleep to, at least imo.

Its all in the eye of the beholder or in this case in the ear of the listener, as some member's have said already its mostly whats hip on the moment which applies to every fab out there and its something natural.

Ill tho i prefer classical over pop or rap, the one thing we can all agreed is as much as other genres come and gone, classic will always prevail, at least on spirit, cause whether we like it or not, a big orchestra epic theme sounds better on any action movie as well as to have the ability to be more dynamic than any other genre out there.

So let them hate the classic just be happy that you can show some class, on the other hand their hip thing right now will be forgotten by next summer.

It's the same as people who say "How can anyone like dubstep/rap/country/other hated genre? It's not even music". They've usually been exposed to very little of the genre and are making large assumptions based on that small selection.

In many cases, I would much rather listen to rap or pop over classical just because that's what I like and people are allowed to have different tastes in music. I'll still listen to classical music, but it is not my favorite genre.

Also, listening to classical music does not automatically make you cultured.
