Wasted potential for the show
HedonismBot replied to CastletonSnob's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
It would have been nice to see more of the Kirin, specifically what their culture is like when they're not living under the idea that turning themselves into fleshy robots is more convenient than practicing healthy anger management. That might have been a bit problematic, seeing as Rainbow Dash's parents live in Cloudsdale. -
Wasted potential for the show
HedonismBot replied to CastletonSnob's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
Plus the future scenes of "The Last Problem" put a fair amount of emphasis on non-ponies integrating into Equestrian society. A shot of Silverstream as a Wonderbolt would have fit beautifully with that. Plus they claimed that they were only looking out for Scootaloo's safety when they wanted to yank her away from the ponies that had actually served as her family, then accidentally released a dangerous creature into the schoolhouse. And at the end, they outright admitted to valuing their careers over being there for their child. Some fans have suggested that the episode should have gone the "mature" route and had Scootaloo actually move away with them, but under the circumstances that would have just come off as an unforgivable dick move. For what it's worth, their appearance in the Season 10 comic didn't paint them in a much better light. The first thing they did with Scootaloo was try to get her involved in what they do for a living (including sticking her hoof in a cragadile's mouth), rather than exploring what she likes to do. -

One would expect at least the griffons and Abyssinians to have at least some meat in their cuisine, though accessing it from Equestria may be a bit inconvenient (perhaps less so after "The Last Problem" as more and more non-ponies integrate into Equestrian society). Personally, if offered the opportunity I'd have to look at all the circumstances. If I could get a unicorn body, studying magic should be stimulating enough to distract me from the lack of internet. Otherwise... it's hard to say.

Pipp Episode Idea: Pipp vs Smartphone Addiction
HedonismBot replied to Bright Honor's topic in MLP Generation 5 (G5)
I was actually hoping they'd keep that kind of thing to a minimum. I have no objection to them giving the G5 world the amount of technological progress one would expect given the time frame, and in general giving us something more than your garden variety pre-industrial fantasy world could very well be a good thing with skilled writers. Focusing the plot on real-world technology at the expense of the fantasy stuff that most of us tune in for? Nope. Though Pipp being glued to her phone while missing out on cool fantasy-type stuff going on could work out, possibly. -

Technology in Equestria (replacement for magic?)
HedonismBot replied to TBD's topic in MLP Generation 5 (G5)
Really now, pre-industrial fantasy worlds are a dime a dozen. The interaction of fantasy stuff with advancing science and technology has so much untapped potential (for what it's worth, that was one of the things that got me interested in Legend of Korra). Plus G5 is supposed to take place far enough in the future that the Mane Six and their achievements are thought my mainstream Equestria to be some silly old myth. One would expect to see a fair amount of technological progress in that time. There was actually a statement from the G4 staff to the effect of "If you see something that looks unusually high-tech, assume it's powered by magic". I had always thought that seeing more sophisticated examples of combining magic and technology (as with, say, Tank's propeller) would be more interesting than just having fancier real-world technology. Though there's no reason we can't have both. -
Horns, Wings or Hooves ... Which would you pick?

As a human in pony society, would you miss meat?

"Magic Duel" established that age manipulation spells are possible, and pre-alicorn Twilight almost managed to cast one on a flower. Celestia-size Twilight should have no difficulty keeping her friends forever young. Though if one or more of them were to decide that they'd rather let nature take its course (I could easily see Applejack or Fluttershy doing so), things could get complicated.

In "The Crystaling" it was stated that the alicorn upgrade is normally bestowed upon a pony for performing some "princess-worthy task", implying that it's normally a cosmic reward for proving one's self worthy of such power. It certainly would be cool to see a pony ascend in that fashion. Letting it happen to an earth pony would be a nice way to dispel the "unicorn master race" stuff.

I have figured out who Scootaloo's parents are
HedonismBot replied to ManaMinori's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
I certainly see where you're coming from - even if their work is as important as they say, the least they could have done is arrange for Scootaloo to actually live with her aunts, as opposed to them alternating foal-sitting duties with whichever local adults aren't busy. Rainbow Dash basically did more for Scootaloo than her entire biological family put together. Plus there's no indication that she's ever seen a doctor about the whole "can't fly" thing. Then again, Rainbow Dash helped Apple Bloom try hang gliding and got Tank his propeller backpack, but only gave Scootaloo a lecture on how she should have no preference for being able to fly over not being able to fly. So she's not that much better there. -
Theorycrafting Equestria's Loss of Harmony
HedonismBot replied to Jeric's topic in MLP Generation 5 (G5)
Yes, that was basically the plot of an early draft described in the previous leaks - The different species were on the brink of war, a bunch of corrupt alicorns came to power and forced them to live apart, and the population at large had pretty much accepted it. No word on how much of that made it into the movie we'll actually get. -

Just because it's plausible doesn't mean we the audience would enjoy seeing it. The idea of G4's happy ending being undone is already generating more than its fair share of controversy. Seeing Twilight go from "Friendship isn’t easy, but it’s worth fighting for!" to "Meh, whatever." would, for many fans, feel like rubbing salt in a wound.

I just thought of another thing: With G4, there was a social media post from the creative team to the effect of "if you see something that looks unusually advanced, assume it's powered by unicorn magic". With all the modern-ish stuff we've seen, it looks as though they've been using magic to industrialize while conveniently sidestepping the environmental horrors we had to deal with here in real life. If that went bye-bye along with all the friendship and harmony, the ponies are going to be in for a world of hurt.
