Hello, just read Equestria Daily, and I'm SUPER hyped.

 

I don't get why people are being suspicious about this, because this looks AMAZING. The story line looks like it's going to be incredibly compelling and interesting, surrounding around a deep story line and a villain who has really good points, and will cover topics around communism. Which would be a FANTASTIC thing to do.

 

Also, the Smooze is coming back. He looks like he's going to be done more truthfully than Tirek was, so for that I'm really excited.

 

The normal episodes are going to of course be the same, but the news we've gotten looks great.

If you don't like this, please tell me why. If your just as excited as I am, join the club.

 

It also looks like this is going to be a return to the two parters where it was about all of the friends together, instead of just Twilight.

 

I'm almost upset that people are saying that it's going to be bad, why, it has everything going for it.

Ever since i saw the that unfinished animation piece at Comic con, i had the feeling that they do something very deep with it.

 

Some people where speculating that the equal cutie marks where just place holders, but i knew that this was really about equality. One of my real life brony friends said that they would never go this deep and finally i can say to him: "I am not the kind of guy who said i told you so, but I TOLD YOU SO."

I think her character model is very good and i think that she can make for a very good antagonist. She is not the classic MLP villain, meaning that she's not power hungry, or even a monster. She is a normal pony, who believes that what she's doing is good and that makes her very interesting.

 

What can i say? I am already sold on the premiere episode.

Do you remember the second official trailer that came out, the high pitched "THEY ARE BACK!!111" one? Well in one of the shots she was casting a rather large spell, so I will assume she will be very good at magic, maybe not an equal, but certainly close.

I sure hope so, Sombra and Tirek were the only smart villains, so seeing a not monstrous demon/shadow being act competent would be pretty great.

Aw man, I can't wait for this new Season any longer! I wasn't expecting to have a story or have themes that hold higher stakes than usual, so I'm definitely interested to see where this Season premiere is going.

 

I'm also excited for Starlight Glimmer. It's like the first time since we've had a regular pony as a Season premiere/finale villain, and she seems to be more than just the run-of-the-mill power-hungry villain. To see MLP:FiM deconstruct the themes of a utopian place is also sure to keep me excited.

She has similar movements and expressions as Twilight too in my opinion.

Very likely. The name must be a foil/opposite to Twi. I don't think she is a student of Celestia at all, though she seems to have a talent for magic and maybe her magic made her friends jealous in the past so she wants to have everyone be equal so they won't experience the pain she once did. Starlight Glimmer either forgot that her magic/her horn makes her quote on quote "superior" or it is the exact reason for her actions. Seems you can never make a pony completely equal because the unicorns and pegasus ponies still have magic and flight.

I have to admit I'm not that hyped for the premier.  One thing, it's not communism, please stop saying we're getting an exploration into it cause we're not. It's about individuality and self worth, not economic doctrine explaining class struggle.  

The other is I think wanting is better than having, that we're building up the expectations of the episodes so much that what we will get will be nowhere close to what we've imagined.  

Thirdly your definition for complexity will have to vary.  Complex for MLP certainly.  Complex compared to other shows which cover similar topics, I highly doubt.  I have no doubt the villain will be more morally ambiguous compared to others, but did you see that smile? That is the smile of an enviable bad guy. I guess when they hype it up like the Legend of Korra I expect the Legend of Korra style writing. 

 

Now do I want S5 to come? You bet! I still believe we are going to get a bunch of incredible episodes but I'm waiting for the true meat of the season, the stuff after the premier more so than the premier itself cause that's more in line with what the show is really going to be about.

I haven't been up to date with the S5 news, really. All I know is something about a BG characters episode and an Anti-Twilight with a = cutie mark.

I wonder if this character of Starlight Glimmer, and her flawed idea that "the only way to be happy is if we're all equal," is the writers' way of addressing concerns about the considerable power imbalance among the Mane 6 since Season 3...but maybe I'm just over-thinking it. 

 

If the real story turns out to be that Starlight's idea of equality is "drones with no distinct identity or skills," and that respect for each other's individuality is what makes you truly equal, then I'm interested. It's a valid lesson and hints at something the show hasn't really addressed before: a bad guy who thinks she's a good guy. Not evil, but seriously misguided. That's the kind of change I absolutely want to see.

 

And the way they hinted at the background pony episode was funny. "We're finally going to have..." *TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES*   I see where Celestia gets her sense of humor.

The Season 5 premiere may just be the best two-parter this show has ever put out if they can get a good storyline out of it. What I like the best about Starlight is that she is not only the antithesis of Twilight, but to all of the other villains this show has put out. The others have mostly sought to destroy harmony and have had loosely-defined motivations. This one seeks to implement an extremist interpretation of harmony; conformity, and has a motivation rooted in a common problem many of us go through in life. It really makes a story more interesting and more sophisticated when the villain is out to solve a real problem just as much as the heroes are, rather than just to satiate their own greed.

 

The concept of individuality really has been a pillar of Equestrian society since the show's beginning. However, since the last couple of seasons, it has begun to look as if Equestria is taking their nurture of individuality for granted and never questioning it. There could be possible downsides to cutie marks and the emphasis on "special talents". Now, it seems like we're finally going to see that notion challenged and get the all-important answer to the question "why?" As someone who likes speculating on how Equestria deals with negative self-identity, this is what I've been waiting for.

 

 

As for the Communist references, I don't think of this show as a direct commentary on Communism. Visual cues make the connection easy, however I think the deeper meaning is more applicable to today's society. If you think about it, many low-level jobs and especially our education system dissuade individuality. This is a harmful practice as it destroys self-confidence and may kill needed talents and creativity. If people have a negative self-identity, not knowing what they want to or can do, they suffer and anyone who would benefit from their unrealized or unrecognized talents will as well. This happens even in the Western world, in fact it happens in pretty much any society where too much emphasis is placed on the upper classes and their needs over the needs of the many. The fact that MLP is tackling this concept head-on is very welcome and just what many of us need.

I think the latter happened already, if you pay attention, their cutie mark crussading was progressively tonned down since S3, so, it makes sense if they finally get their cutie marks this season
