Rivulet 116 May 5, 2015 Share May 5, 2015 So, we all know what viruses are. I mean, we are all using computers so we should at least have an idea. They aren't a good experience at all. I recently had a virus get into my desktop PC. I know have to wipe my memory completely just to fix it. I know that it seems that it's a very easy fix, but I lost so much on it. I had written out sketches and rough sketchings of characters for my YouTube project, stories that weren't posted online, and my OC, which I have to make a new one. But this post isn't to complain. I want to hear your stories with viruses, or if you have sent one out, or whatever. As long as it has something to do with a virus, please tell me about it. Codelyy 1,286 May 5, 2015 Share May 5, 2015 (edited) Years ago i downloaded a torrent for Godfather 1 on the PC and everything was fine... The game worked and I loved it till sky which was my internet provider shut down are internet since a virus from that torrent was causing other people's internet to slow right now. My virus was basically overloading Sky. Sky then told me to wipe everything off my computer to make sure the virus was gone before they gave the internet back Edited May 5, 2015 by Lapis

Grepper 3,192 May 5, 2015 Share May 5, 2015 Wine is a compatibility layer that allows Windows programs to run on GNU/Linux systems. Unfortunately not all software works fully, if at all. Here is Wine's about page, if you are interested in reading more. https://www.winehq.org/about/
Time Shield 402 May 5, 2015 Share May 5, 2015 (edited) Nevermind, I just looked it up. So, WINE is a system able to run Windows programs on Linux? I'm still confused... was your argument that Linux now has a way of being affected by Windows viruses too? *EDIT* And apparently ninja'd. silvadel 1,393 May 5, 2015 Share May 5, 2015 (edited) I got a day-zero exploit virus through an ad. I have used ad-blocks ever since. (No, it wasn't here and yes it was several years ago) Edited May 5, 2015 by silvadel
simba86 1,541 May 5, 2015 Share May 5, 2015 we have had internet since the early 90's so we have had our fair share. last one we got was because mom opened an attachment in an email and it disabled the anti virus program and started opening porn sites and trying to download stuff so I had to take it off the Internet and hunt it down and remove it myself. Celtore 2,770 May 5, 2015 Share May 5, 2015 Nevermind, I just looked it up. So, WINE is a system able to run Windows programs on Linux? I'm still confused... was your argument that Linux now has a way of being affected by Windows viruses too? *EDIT* And apparently ninja'd. That would amuse me a fair bit to be honest! Wine isn't nearly good enough for viruses to do damage cross platform because the two platforms are entirely different in terms of their architecture, even with a software emulation layer. Regardless though, every platform has viruses and every OS has security holes. Anyone trying to convince you otherwise is either a fanboy or trying to sell you something. I have some good memories tangoing with the ocasional malware. It mostly happened when I was young and foolish, running windows XP and pulling down freeware and shareware like I was invincible. I particularly remember this one rogue antivirus... virus which drive-by downloaded onto my system. It claimed I had tons of viruses on the system (rather ironic), it took over pretty much everything and it was hard as hell to remove. I also installed BonziBuddy and cometcursor if you count them. They were a lot more tame though. edit: Apparently I lied, certain tailored viruses can run on Wine, but they don't run very well. Wine is kind of terrible, permissions limit exe files to a specific folder (sandboxing them away from personal/important files and the system files) and it makes more sense to target an OS-level exploit rather than targeting an optional compatability layer. So it's technically possible... but I don't see why anyone would bother.
Yummychickenblue 301 May 5, 2015 Share May 5, 2015 I think I did awhile back. I got it from using an unsecure/compromised website. Not too sure what it did. I just know that it tried to open up some weird stuff (Comodo Security, which is what I use for live protection after Avast) allowed to me block what it was trying to do. It also threw up a warning that the MBAM download page was insecure. Probably to keep people from downloading MBAM and running a scan. I was able to download MBAM though and that detected it and solved the issues.
Tom Snyder 4,112 May 5, 2015 Share May 5, 2015 (edited) I've had it happen on several occasions, i took it happening 10 times for me to learn what to do and what not. Muffin.Exe is one of those that allows a backdoor into your PC or Laptop(which is why i use a virtual desktop). EpicEnergy 23,069 March 27, 2023 Share March 27, 2023 An old computer of mine which I no longer have once got a virus on it. I think it was from downloading a mod, but thankfully the anti-virus software that I had detected it and was able to get rid of it before it did any serious damage. Also, I've been on trustworthy sites where a malicious ad appeared on my screen telling me there is a virus on my computer. It happened to me a few times, but I never click on them because that's called scareware - an ad designed to scare you into clicking a link to a malicious site by telling you that you have a virus on your computer when you really don't have one yet. What I do when that happens is shut off my computer, clear my browser's cache, and scan my computer with my antivirus software.

Dreambiscuit 9,293 March 30, 2023 Share March 30, 2023 I’ve had three major viruses on different computers and they were evil. I don’t know where they came from and running a simple anti-virus protection doesn’t do anything. Luckily I have a brother who knows computers and he had to tear down my computers to the baseboards to get at the problems. He eventually got them fixed but it was a lengthy, multi-week process. If I hadn’t had him to fix my laptops over the years I’d have had to buy new ones and start from scratch. Viruses are evil, as are the scumbags who create them; it’s an adolescent practice of people who have no lives. If someone has the know-how to create something as intricate as these viruses, they should be pulling in the big money and not sitting in their mom’s basement trying to mess up other people’s lives. Cash In 22,053 March 30, 2023 Share March 30, 2023 Yeah, I've gotten viruses and some of which completely busted the computer. That was during the days of Windows Xp and also when I was far younger and not as knowledgeable.
Fluttershutter 2,353 March 31, 2023 Share March 31, 2023 I had a bad thing that basically destroyed an old computer I had. Luckily it was old and no big loss. I've had a few problems on this one(also old by now) but resetting it to an old save point has fixed the problem and I didn't lose any data. I back things up on an external hard drive. I need to get that done soon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvfD5rnkTws
