spoiler Fears Confirmed- New Pony Problem

Honestly, gotta say, this could make for break the season for me here. S5 was a letdown from S4, and friendship games was one of the worst trainwrecks I've seen in a while, plus seeing that the staff are 100% okay with reducing the other 5 to either cameos or just living power batteries has left a terrible taste in my mouth.

Thinking it might be the end of the road for FIM like what sponge bob has degraded into, though I hope I'm wrong.

Not looking at that promo but would be cool if Flurry Heart becomes evil that would make my day.

>they pull a sailor moon and the Finale villain brainwashes flurry heart and ages her up into an adult to kill her mother

But no, seriously, It'd be cool but I seriously doubt it. Like, snow in july doubt it ;P

I think you're being generous. I don't see her having more than 3 episodes, tops, 'devoted' to her. I used air quotes there, because when you have a baby character, the story tends to focus more on the ones taking care of the baby, and not the baby her/himself.

That's how a baby story should go. You actually pointed out one of the things I've been trying to say the whole time. What you just said- well, that's the ideal. But the issue is, they went for "OP baby causes a problem, other ponies have to fix it."

Rather than have the conflict focus on caring for/rescuing/ saving the baby, which would be wayy better, they made the conflict "Baby creates blizzard." Which is a ridiculous idea, and incredibly lazy.

That Magic that Flurry Heart has caused may have something to do with Magic Surges that always happen with baby ponies, as we noticed with Pumpkin Cake back in Season 2.

That wasn't any better. It just wasn't this magnitude of bad writing.

If only. Much doubt. But I would only like that scenario if she was a changeling or actually some ancient entity. Wouldn't want to have an Anti-Poof any more than I would want a regular one.

've been a fan of this show long enough not to jump to conclusions too quickly or freak out over promotions and story arcs. I can think of a few better ways to start season six than this, but I understand the obligation the writers have to the almighty marketing division of Hasbro.

So, write the baby in like Dill Pickles- the only well-written baby I can think of off-hand.

These people here having in depth conversation debate, and here I am, thinking "lol her name is Flurry and she made a flurry" Have fun building your text walls, I'm out :D (I for one am remaining optimistic about the new season)

I genuinely envy you. I really wish I could just turn off my concern and enjoy the show without thinking about it.

What's done is done. There's no use launching criticism when we haven't even seen the whole picture yet. Any complaints are just superficial and uninformed right now.

The show would never go in such a direction(at least I hope not). It sounds like bad fan fiction. Having FH be a changeling means that either Chrysalis is the 'father' or that she somehow managed to switch the baby with one of her changelings immediately after birth. One is waaaay to risqué and the other just implausible and repetitive from season 2. Being an ancient deity makes no real sense either unless you mean the new birth of an Alicorn unleashes some kind of ancient curse. Edited by Roughshod

Since it is only 2 weeks away, I'll wait & see.  As to season 6 being lamer than season 5, they would have to try really hard.  One point, starting this early they'll probably have a Summer hiatus.  Season 5 had most of its best episodes after the break, so I won't write off Season 6 until at least Fall.

Still, season 3 started with the Crystal Empire (weakest 2 parter) & it was a pretty good season.  So, even if this episode is as lame as everyone seems to think it will be, maybe it will be an isolated incident.

Everypony. Natasha Levinger and MA Larson have both left the show. That makes me even more concerned. At this point, I'm not resting on any real story quality of the tier that we're used to. Hopefully the characters are still entertaining enough, but I'm setting my expectations very low for everything besides comedy and characterization

This season has worldbuilding as its theme, when the show NEEDS its best writers.

But, the show didn't have the best track record with adventure episodes even WITH Larson, AKR, Levinger, and McCarthy.

Personally, it seems like the show is going in the direction of a random, slice of life (but also fantasy adventure) comedy. Which is a type of show i love, and a show that Josh Haber can write. But it's not quite the MLP we normally expect. MLP is  a slice of life show at its core, but we love the adventure stories as well. That said, Josh Haber doesn't do adventure well, so it should honestly go back to a more season 1 feel, or it will tank under Josh Haber's inability to write a high quality adventure. The key is also whether the new writers can maintain the characterizations we know and love. It will fail even as a Slice of Life if the characters aren't right.

So, here's my bars

Story Expectations- low

Characterization- uncertain

Slice of Life Comedy- dependent on characterization, and therefore uncertain

Going off that promo, we don't know that the alicorn baby will actually be the focus of the episode. They may be just emphasizing it to appeal to little girls or sell the toys. But I agree that an alicorn baby is a bad idea in a show that already had one alicorn too many. I won't exactly be chomping at the bit to see this premiere.

One thing about the premier, it at least clears up these Amazon toy listings that were floating around earlier this year.
I was pretty sure that it was just going to be a "pack a random mane six with a princess" toyline, but it makes sense now since the premier's toyline is based around a new princess being born.

So far I am uncertain about this season. Will I like it? Maybe. I can't judge a whole season by a single concept.

When it comes to Flurry's "Op" ability I cannot help but compare it to the Cake twins, (of whom were unicorns and were explained to go through a period in their life where their magic is more intense. This could also be relevant in alicorns with a more intense result.

Oh my gosh, this idea seems kinda overdone in cartoons. Random and unexpected, seemingly-innocent character has more power than others can conceivably imagine. I didn't like Flurry Heart from the beginning, and now I see she's a set up and will probably be the main villain of the season finale and they'll have to calm her down. Until then, she'll probably be a recurring character that gets a ton of screen time being annoying and making baby sounds and Twilight will be left to watch her and break her back while she destroys everything and all the princesses will blame Twilight.

When you make over 5 seasons about magic power and lasers that is bound to happen.

So, at the end of the premiere

they nerf Flurry Heart

thank god.

So, the opener was kind of eh. The plot was every bit as contrived as we expected it would be, but going forward, it looks fine. Also, Starlight told her cringeworthy backstory again, and there is no further addressing of this point. Nor will there be I think. But at least the biggest problem has been dealt with.

Agreed on it being eh. Wasn't a good episode, wasn't a bad episode.

I'd be perfectly happy with something like it during the middle of the season, its just not a good sign when the "big guns" episode (a two parter and a premier) feels so utterly forgettable and mediocre.

So I did not read the thread since it was so long and quite likely filler with too much negativity for my liking.

Anyway I do not think that the baby was a problem. The episode was not quite perfect (as a season opener mostly, I expect best from them) but I still liked it. As long as the adress the alicorn issue in the future Flurry Heart is not an issue for me.

yeah. As long as there's never an episode where the premise is "Oh noes, Sunburst's spell is wearing off" I'll be content in that department.

So, the baby bastard got nerfed? (I was at a place with no internet)

Hmh. There could/might be a lot of plot with flurry. Such as every now and then the mane 6 see her growing up?

I dunno, Mabey it's just "BUY OUR TOYS X 7" or something.

  • 3 weeks later...

The brony fandom has ended. The show has officially jumped the shark. RIP Bronies: 2010-2016

If I had a bit for every time I heard that . . .

Two episodes post premier and we're all still here. Shockingly (for some), Flurry Heart was NOT the end of the world. Despite her being such a problem was ingeniously woven into the narrative.

Honestly this fandom some days. It's not often for me as I have a tolerance for outcry shenanigans like these and an otherwise overwhelming love of this show and fandom, but sometimes it can be a bit eye rolling.

Seeing as how alicorns can control their age as well as unicorns with the alicorn amulet it's possible Flurry Heart can assume an adult form.

When did anypony alter their own age with the Alicorn Amulet / alicorn powers? They only showed other ponies being aged by it (Snips and Snails).

I am just going to say that the holes Flurry Heart punched in the walls of the palace were ridiculous.

Those walls were solid crystal.
