I may get hunted down for saying this but I think Nightmare Before Christmas is over-rated af. I mean, it's a pretty good movie but that's it. I've seen far better. It's very pretty to look at but if it wasn't I think it would just be considered pretty good. I just don't understand how it's STILL making so much merchandise.

What movies do you think are over-rated?

James Cameron's Avatar. I'm sorry to everyone who likes this movie, but I can't bring myself to sit through many of Cameron's movies, and this one is by far the most boring to me. This is speaking as a fan of his original record breaker, Titanic.

The Fast and the Furious franchise as a whole. The action, cars, girls, explosions and cringey acting doesn't make it stand out or be any different from other similar summer blockbusters but yet people find it so popular like it's the only franchise that do that.

Yes! I'm so sick of those. My friend in high school ALWAYS made me see them with her. I don't miss that.

The Godfather.  People go on about it being the best film ever made but no way, not even close.  Don't get me wrong, it's a good film but it isn't that good.

The Godfather is overrated? Maybe a little bit but not to the point where I'd want to put it in the "overrated" category. I certainly don't think it's the best film ever made and there are other Mafia films I enjoy more such as Goodfellas, Casino, Once Upon A Time in America, The Untouchables and even Road to Perdition. On the other hand, The Godfather is a very well made film with excellent actors and music. It's just a little bit slow. At least the first one.

I'm a bit curious, which...3 films would you say are the best?

Citizen Kane is one of the most boring movies I ever saw

Agreed. It is amazingly well made for its time, but compared to today's films where those things now are standard, it doesn't stand out at all and the film is boring af.

James Cameron's Avatar.

I don't think anyone consider Avatar to be the best film ever made.. The only reason why it was so popular at release and why it brought in so much money is because 1. it was one of the first films to be released in 3D and 2. Because of the way it was made. People were curious to check it out.

The Shawshank Redemption. Don't get me wrong, it's a deep, poignant movie but I don't think it's the best ever made.

While I REALLY enjoyed Avatar the first watch, I was bored on the 2nd watch, for some reason.

The first that came into my mind was Frozen. Stay tuned for more that I can remember.

Inglourious Basterds.

I did not get this movie at all.  My friends all loved it and would never stop quoting it, despite the fact that the movie was 80% romantic drama and 20% action.  Sure, the scenes with Brad Pitt and the gang were entertaining and I laughed at Brad Pitt's heavy midwestern accent when attempting to pronounce "grazie" and "buongiorno", but they were so few and far between in a movie that's TWO AND A HALF HOURS.  It was even worse because the way the movie was advertised, I was expecting a light-hearted action movie set during WWII.

Someone please help me understand why this movie is so popular.

Deadpool. I'm not crazy about superhero movies, but Deadpool was supposed to be charismatic, witty and funny (or at least that what I was sold), and he was neither of those things. Maybe I'm being too harsh, but that's what happens when you overhype a movie.

The Twilight series, Divergent series, Maze Runner series, most superhero movies (I really like Iron Man and Captain America though), LOTR. Don't get me wrong on that last one, I just think it didn't live up to its fullest potential under Peter Jacksons direction.

It's one of my fave but you gotta point. It was good in its time and a few years after but now it's just too much.

Ah yes, other popular movies I wasn't hyped about were Inception, Avengers, Captain America, Thor, Hugo, and Up. I was disappointed in Finding Dory, too, maybe because I got my expectations too high.

I'd have to say Pulp Fiction. Conceptually, it's interesting, but I found myself wondering why I should, at any point of the movie, give two lumpy, peanut-decorated.... granola bars about any of the characters or what they're doing.

I think the 1970 comedy Airplane! is the most overrated film I've ever seen. I get that it's supposed to be a silly, screwball spoof, but I find many of the jokes too easy, weakly delivered, or nonsensical. A few of them were good, but I feel the movie is overall too cheesy for classic status. My opinions of the spoof genre aren't that high anyway; it's rife with wasted potential and movies that could have been far better than they actually were, but instead became the refuge of Z-list failures like Seltzer & Friedberg. They also age poorly. Mel Brooks was the only great spoof artist IMHO, and Spaceballs is still as funny today as it may have been back when it first came out.

Also, there's It's a Wonderful Life. The movie is long and plodding for such a simplistic plot and set of characters. The best and most iconic part, that is the intervention by the guardian angel, is in the last 20 or so minutes of the film. I'm not going to disrespect that because it is iconic, my problem is that the movie takes so long to set up its relatively simple story that much of it feels irrelevant. Overall, people have a higher tolerance of simpler and, frankly, cheesier stuff at Christmas, so it's far easier to let stuff like this slide.

I do like The Godfather, as i said, it is a really good film, but in some quarters it seems to have taken on this mantle of 'the Emperor's new clothes'.  I have heard people demanding that people justify their position if they disagree with it being the best film ever made.  Of course those people are a small minority, and I'm sure that most people would agree with us that although it is good, it is far from the best.  As you say yourself, Goodfellas is in my humble opinion a far superior film.

Now that is a difficult question.  I could quite happily give you a list of my three favourite films, but those are not necessarily the same as what I might consider to be the three best films.  My favourite films will be governed by my own subjective preferences, whereas the best films will governed by a more objective analysis of a films quality.  For example, if we take two versions of essentially the same film, The Day the Earth Stood Still from 1951, and its 2008 remake, and we look at one single aspect of the film, for this example, the special effects.  The SFX in the 2008 version are immeasurably better, hardly surprising given the film was made 57 years after the original.  We could all agree that the SFX are objectively better, but the film as a whole?  The remake basically took everything good about the original, and chucked it in the bin, to replace it with little more than shiny SFX.  Anyway, I digress.  We could fill a whole other thread on such a topic.

I have to agree with saying that Citizen Kane is pretty overrated.

While there are some parts of it that I did like, it feels more like a film meant to be analyzed during film study classes, rather than be enjoyed by itself.

I hated the godfather...but that's due to personal biases.  it clearly has depth and is a work of art.

however, i cannot understand the love for Princess Mononoke.  I'm a Miyazaki fan, but oh my goodness, that movie is unwatchable to me...what is the point?  why do people like it?

My very subjective opinion:

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - is it supposed to be a comedy? I didn't even smiled during the whole movie. Maybe I just had to be on something to get it.

The Dark Knight - boring as hell. Couldn't get through it. But I must be biased here, as I don't like superhero movies.

Back to the Future - a mediocre movie that gives everyone nostalgia for some reason. It has good moments, but it's far from being a masterpiece.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind is the first one that springs to mind for me, though not really because so many people consider it great, but because I once saw a 5-star review for it in the TV guide in a time when I was incredibly fascinated by aliens and sci-fi. This must have been about 14 years ago, but still. I watched it then, and once more years later, but both times I just considered it incredibly boring. The one good part was the music/light communication thing they did, and even that I only liked because I liked the sound.
