How about no ketchup at all? I would much prefer fries either by itself (usually shoestring), with hot sauce, or even with mayonnaise (I don't know why, but I think it goes well).

ALWAYS on the side. On the fries will get your hands messy and result in unevenly distributed ketchup - some fries will get none at all while others are drenched. It's not a pretty sight

Definitely on the side. If I can enjoy my ketchup without having to get it all over my fingers it's preferable. I can also control the amount and uniformity of ketchup from one french fry to the next by dipping them individually.  This is important and non-negotiable.

Ketchup on the never. Especially on fries. If I was to dip fries in anything it'd be ranch but usually opt for nothing.

I usually put the ketchup on the side. If you're eating your fries in a basket or dish, all the ketchup will be concentrated on the top and very little will penetrate to the lower levels. Sometimes, vinegar is nice to put directly on top of the fries though.
