I don't know if there's already a Star Wars thread I can merge this with but I just don't know about all these post-Disney Star Wars spinoffs. I'm probably going to see the Solo movie but the franchise is starting to wear thin for me. I didn't like the Last Jedi, Rogue One was just okay, etc. I feel like they're running it into the ground at this point. They retconned the Expanded Universe and the new sequels feel like more of a rehash than anything else. I'll always be a fan of the original trilogy but it just feels so gimmicky at this point. Thoughts?

Definitely looking uncertain. I had hope for the sequel trilogy since I really enjoyed The Force Awakens, as well as Rogue One. Then The Last Jedi happened and wound up being one of the worst Star Wars within recent memory, it's barely better than Attack of the Clones(worst of the Prequels), and even then it pisses me off a lot more than that one, and killed any good will the last couple of movies built up, retroactively made The Force Awakens worse by taking many major plot points TFA built up and render them completely pointless, amounting to literally nothing. And then there's Solo which has had so much drama and a troubled development, it's hard to expect it to be anything more than subpar. At this point Star Wars fatigue is definitely starting to set in

I feel that the new ones is just brute action, while the older ones covers more on the philosophical side while keeping it entertaining. Also they're missing  this "Shakespeare" vibes to the plot. I guess that's just me but this is my explanation on why I think the new ones is not good as the old ones.

Moreover, it's getting to the point  where its like beating a dead horse. Very repetitive.

Despite the hate that the Last Jedi has been getting, it made lots of money in the theater and on Blu-ray. I enjoyed Force Awaken (mostly for the nostalgia) and thought Rogue One was okay. I will not be seeing the Solo movie because it looks dumb and pointless. Who asked for a Han Solo origin movie? No one. Unfortunately Disney is going to milk this franchise into the dirt. Thankfully, people are starting to speak out against how Disney is treating this franchise.

I liked The Force Awakens. I liked the Rebels cartoon. I liked Rogue One. I thought The Last Jedi was mediocre at first, but it is growing on me. Solo looks interesting. The Resistance cartoon looks awesome. But there's only so much Star Wars the world can take before people start to get sick of it. Heck, people are already getting sick of it. And I don't blame them, even though I'm a fan of a sizeable amount of the SW content that Disney has produced. I feel like any more Star Wars past Episode 9 is going to be too much for me. And at this rate, with another trilogy apparently on the horizon along with a live action TV series and another "Star Wars Story" film, I'm worried that the heart and soul I'm still willing to see in this franchise is about to go out the window.

It's time for the franchise to end. :sunny:

Spoiler

Except for the old Expanded Universe, or "Legends" canon. People put so much heart and soul into that timeline that it quite literally covers tens of thousands of years of galactic history, with probably hundreds of thousands of original characters. Let writers keep that going in book and comic form. But kill the films.

Spoiler

Or make an Heir to the Empire film. I would actually give that a look.

I looked into it and contrary to mistaken belief, Disney did NOT make the choice to wipe the EU and they're smart enough to let Lucasfilm handle the reins, so Executive Meddling by Disney very rarely happens to the new Star Wars stories. The EU wipe was decided by Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm.

That's all I'm going to say, and any attempt to debate this fact will be ignored.

Star Wars has spiraled down the porcelain since Disney got its hooks into it. When it was in George Lucas' hands it was a matter of personal creativity and he poured himself into the work. Disney hands it down through their stable of 'talent' to produce product as fast as they can to turn a profit. They're not about the art, quality or even the continuity; only promotion. George sold Lucasfilm with the assurance from Disney that he'd be kept onboard as a creative consultant for Star Wars, but as soon as the papers were signed they promptly dropped him, along with any aspect of the long established EU timeline that might interfere with their own limited writers who don't know or follow the material. Disney is taking the path of least resistance; eliminating anything that might provide a challenge to their generic template of movie making. They're a factory, plain and simple, discarding anything that slows the process of making money.

Star Wars no longer feels like Star Wars; it's amateurish, predictable and artless. There is no sense of fun so richly associated with the originals. The closest Disney has come to a decent Star Wars movie was Rogue One, only because they didn't take as many liberties (i.e. wiping out all vestiges of the original characters or plot). But even so, it lacked the high spirited emotional impact of the real Star Wars movies of the past.

I love (the original) Star Wars saga more than any other movie franchise. It's more than a movie series; it's a way of life. But the abominations Disney produces simply aren't Star Wars. They've become an opportunity for untalented filmmakers to get a free ride. Remember when they were looking for a director for episode 7? No one wanted anything to do with it because they didn't want the blame if the fans were unhappy. But once JJ Abrams showed the world that desperate fans are a plentiful commodity, directors started crawling out of the woodwork. It shows that there's nothing like having a world famous series to stamp your name on without anything good expected of you. Disney is riding the brand name, and will do so until the fans say there's been enough BS.

And unfortunately, to say there's no executive meddling from Disney in the affairs of Lucasfilm doesn't cover the entire picture. Kathleen Kennedy may be the president of Lucasfilm and responsible for many business and creative decisions, but she ultimately reports to Disney and is subject to their approval. Disney never allows a major decision on the Star Wars property without exhaustively running it through their executive pecking order. Everyone in the Disney family of companies has to go through the Mouse, there are no exceptions.

Well the next trilogy is being produced by the people from of Game of Thrones, so I can't say I'm looking forward to that.  I'll probably just watch the last jedi, and then the final installment of the current triology and then just quit watching Star Wars.

I just watched the Solo trailer. Some of the scenes and the music seemed a little too flashy to me, and doesn't give a Star Wars feel. That said, as long as the movie does justice to Solo and gives a thrilling and suspenseful story-line, I'll be fine with it.

Quite honestly, it's looking pretty grim with the way things are going right now. :adorkable: The movies are starting to fall behind financial expectations, the merchandise isn't selling as well as it should, the latest films have been getting an awful lot of backlash (your opinion on this may vary, but the fact is is that a lot of people dislike the new movies), and the overall audience interest seems to be slowly fading away.

I'll leave my opinion on the films and merchandise out of this, but from everything I've seen so far, interest in Star Wars is only going to fade away. Will it disappear forever? Most certainly not, but with the way things are going for the franchise right now, they're just asking for people to get sick of the brand. I have a personal hunch that Star Wars will go through a audience burnout of some kind, but I'm not sure when interest will return. :o

Star Wars probably isn't going to die as a brand; there are certainly others who have endured the test of time longer, but as of the next 15 years or so, I think the franchise is going to go through an era of disinterest. I'm not a psychic, though; I could very well be wrong.

Whatever Rian Johnson is planning for the next trilogy, I hope it involves the years long before the prequel trilogy, and not the years after the sequel trilogy. A little glimpse on the history of the Star Wars universe will be more interesting to me than seeing the fate of Rey's descendants.

one of two things:

1. original and opened to new ideas/concepts

2. Bound to mass appeal standards or reusing popular tropes

but we actually have to wait and see. I think it's still too early to decide, disney hasn't owned star wars for long enough to determine what their ultimate direction will be, since they seem to be trying to juggle everything so they can gather as many different audiences as possible.

The force awakens was pretty by the numbers, but not terrible. I wasn't very invested in rogue one. However I think TFA and rogue one are decent movies, nothing spectacular but they have their moments. Except for the last jedi, I hated that movie. But that's just me, I can't bring myself to say anything good about it beyond some of it's visuals.

well, after the removal of almost everything from the cannon (thanks disney) and the garbage that we call the last two movies (again thanks disney) i just like to pretend that the cannon is still the same as it was before the house of mouse took over. though the future is looking grim, i must say.

seriously do you know how many games i played through, how many books i read, how many comics i read just so i could keep up with all of the extended universe only for disney to say 'oh by the way none of that is cannon anymore, lol' i literally cried

I've pretty much lost all interest in future Star Wars films. I thought Force Awakens and Rogue One were serviceable at best, but I think TLJ was the final nail in the coffin. Truth is, Star Wars is pretty much creatively bankrupt at this point, and all I see for it now is becoming yet another washed-out, over-saturated, Marvel-esque franchise that will continuously release repetitive content every year that has no defining soul or character to it. It's really a shame, considering how the OT managed to stand the test of time nearly 40 years later, whilst already I feel like TLJ is aging terribly after just a few months.

Taking into account all of the behind-the-scenes goings-on of the Solo movie, I'd say it's outcome isn't looking good; what with changing directors when like 80% of shooting had wrapped, hiring an acting coach for the lead because of how bad his performance was, the list just goes on.

So to basically sum it up, they managed to turn a life-long Star Wars fan, like myself, into someone who is practically done with the franchise as a whole. Quite an accomplishment.

TFA and TLJ never happened, they do not exist, the house of mouse never bought us out, and the books/games/comics are still cannon. this is my world and i suggest you all join me else lose all respect for what was once a timeless masterpiece. seriously the only good movie lately was rogue one, that is fully acceptable as it was just tying up a lose end. but the other two...

It's as though you've read every thought in my head! I agree 1000%. The original Star Wars saga is the ONLY Star Wars saga. I can accept Rogue One but that's as far as I go.
